Derby Neck Library offers games, tech talk, movies, and more

DERBY - The Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave. will present a free program, Ancient Games, for 'tweens, teens, and adults at 6 p.m. Sept. 2.
Come learn Go, parcheesi, mancala, chess, and similar games.
All boards and instructions are provided to help you enjoy these games of strategy.

Dinner and a movie
The Library will host Dinner and a Movie (for adults 18 and older) at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 4.
This month’s feature film is Blue Jasmine by Woody Allen, shown on blu-ray.
Refreshments will be served, including free pizza at intermission.

Women's Forum
The Library will host Women's Forum at 12:30 p.m. Sept 15.  Women’s Forum is a monthly discussion group that focuses on short stories, poetry, current events, history, and the arts. Free coffee and tea. Bring a light lunch if you wish.  

Tech Talks
Tech Talks will be presented at 6 p.m. Sept 15 and again at 10:30 a.m. Sept 17.
This series of sessions offers advice on what is new in technology and how best to use it.  Your questions are always answered. For this month’s topic call 203-734-1492.

Music and movement
At 6:30 p.m. Sept. 17 the Library hosts Bedtime Music and Movement with Miss Kathi.  Children may wear their pajamas and bring a favorite stuffed animal to sing and dance under our special stars.

Writers' Round
Writers’ Round meets at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 18.  This is a workshop for authors of all genres - poetry, prose, fiction, scripts, etc. Bring your original works to share with others.  

Teen movie
Teen Movie Night will happen at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 23, featuring Godzilla shown on blu-ray.  Only 20 seats are available; call early to register.
Free refreshments will be served, including pizza.

Read to a canine
The Library welcomes Thor and Bailey our special dog friends your child can read to at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 24.
Each child has a 15-minute session with the canines and a chance to practice their reading skills as a new school year begins. Registration requested.

Evening Book Club
At 6:30 p.m. Sept. 29 the Library inaugurates the Evening Book Club.
Each month a book of fiction, history, biography, or current events will be the focus. 
Books of moderate length and available in paperback format will be selected each month.
The first selection is Two Old Women: An Alaska Legend of Betrayal, Courage and Survival by Velma Wallis.
Free copies will be available at the library approximately one month before the club’s first meeting.

Derby Neck to host writers' workshop, women's forum, tech talk

DERBY - The Derby Neck Library invites all teen and adult authors to Writers’ Round at 6:30 p.m. July 17.  
This is a workshop to share and discuss each others' original works, including poems, scripts, fiction, and more.
Writing prompts are given to help focus your creativity. 

Women's Forum
The Library hosts Women’s Forum at 12:30 p.m. July 21. 
Bring a light lunch and enjoy free coffee and tea.  This month we discuss two short stories—“Fly” by Isaac Asimov and “Verona” by Harold Brodkey.
Free copies of both are available at the Library. 

Tech Talks
Tech Talks now meets at two different times each month. From 6:30 -7:30 p.m. July 14 we present the latest in technological advances and how to best use them to your advantage.  The same talk will be presented from 10:30-11:30 a.m. July 16.

Derby Neck Library offers games, women's forum, tech talk, movies and more

DERBY - A representative from Master’s Table Community Meals will visit Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave. at 6:30 p.m. June 2 to describe the non-profit’s functions.
The organization offers a monthly community dinner open to the public. Other forms of assistance to those in need will also be explained.

Come learn how you can participate and also how you may aid them.
This is a free program. 

Ancient Games
At 6 p.m. June 3 the library hosts Ancient Games.
This monthly event offers participants of all ages instruction in mancala, go, parcheesi and other games of skill and strategy.  Bring a friend or relative and enjoy a free evening of fun.
Dinner and movie
At 5:30 p.m. June 5 the Library presents the movie “Her” on blu-ray and a large screen venue.  This is Dinner and a Movie Night open to people ages 18 and older.  Snacks are provided and at intermission a free pizza supper is served.  

Music and movement
At 6:30 p.m. June 11 the Library offers Bedtime Music and Movement with Miss Kathi.  Bring a favorite stuffed animal and wear your pajamas, if you wish.  We will sing and dance together under the stars.  

Women's Forum
At 12:30 p.m. June 16 the Library presents Women’s Forum, a monthly discussion group open to women of all ages.  We talk about current literature, as well as literature, history, and the arts.  This month’s topics are poems about fathers and notable graduation speeches.  Freee coffee and tea;  participants may wish to bring a light lunch.  


Tech Talks
At 6 p.m. June 16 and again and at 10:30 a.m. June the Library presents Tech Talks—a monthly series.  We feature topics dealing with new technologies and their best uses.  This month begins our evening and morning scheduling, in which a single topic is discussed at two different times of day.  Bring your questions  for our tech gurus as well.  

Writers' Round
At 6:30 p.m. June 19  the Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave. hosts Writers’ Round a workshop for writers of all genres—poetry, fiction, prose, nonfiction, scripts, etc.  Writing prompts are offered to spark your creativity.  Come share your original works with other local authors.  

Summer Reading Clubs
On  June 23 the Library will begin Summer Reading Clubs—for kids in primary grades, middle school, and high school. 
Come in to pick up your starter bag to keep you stay organized and focused.  Free prizes are offered for good readers.  Teens will compete for gifts and enjoy a special scavenger game.  Challenge your friends to see who can read the most this summer; register soon.

Derby Neck launches game club, slates October programs

DERBY - Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave, will begin a new club for teens and adults - GO! from 6-7:30 p.m. Oct. 1
Come learn the ancient Chinese board game GO!, which predates chess and checkers.
Game pieces and boards will be available at the library, as well as free instruction on rules and strategies.
This club will meet once a month on the first Tuesday.

Health care presentation
At 6:30 p.m. Oct. 3 the Library will present a free program, “Medicare Meets Obamacare.” 
An expert from Bankers Life and Casualty & Colonial Penn will give the latest information on this health care program for the elderly-providing details and answering questions about what happens on Jan. 1.
Be prepared for any changes that may affect you.

Movie night
At 6 p.m. Oct. 8 the Library hosts Teen Movie Night.
The feature is “After Earth” starring Jaden Smith and Will Smith, run on Blu-Ray in high definition.  All teens and 'tweens are invited. Free snacks and a pizza supper will be provided.

Music and Movement
At 6:30 p.m. Oct. 9 join Miss Kathi for Bedtime Music and Movement.
Children can wear their pajamas and bring a favorite stuffed animal. The program is filled with singing and dancing and having fun. 

Tech Talks
From 10:30-11:30 a.m. Oct. 16 the Library offers Tech Talks, a series of presentations featuring the latest trends and developments in technology.
This month’s topic is maintaining the hardware and software that make up your personal computer.    This series meets on the third Wednesday of each month. Various topics are discussed.

Read to canines
From 6-7 p.m. Oct. 16 the Library will host two therapy dogs, St. Bernards Thor and Cosmo, for B.A.R.K.—Be a Reading Kid.
Register your child for a 15-minute session of reading to these adorable dogs.

Writers' Round
From 6:30-7:30 p.m. Oct. 17 Writers’ Round, a writing workshop for authors of prose, poetry, fiction, scripts, etc., will meet. Come bring your original works to share with other writers.

Women's Forum
From 12:30-1:30 p.m. Oct. 21 Women’s Forum, a discussion group focusing on issues, literature, history, and news relevant to women, will meet.
This month two short stories, "Mixed Doubles” by Irwin Shaw, and “The Biggest Words” by Torgny Lindgren, will be featured.
Copies are available at the front desk. Bring a light lunch; free coffee and tea served.

Derby Neck slates September sessions

Music and movement
DERBY - Young children and their parents are invited to the Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave. at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 11 for Bedtime Music and Movement.

Join Miss Kathi in singing and dancing to fun tunes. Bring a favorite stuffed animal and wear your pajamas if you wish. 
Women's Forum
At 12:30 p.m. Sept. 16 the Library presents Women’s Forum - a discussion group focusing on literary, historical, social, and cultural topics of interest to women.
For September the group will discuss school memories and  old-fashioned poetry recitations.
Bring your ideas and recall your own memories of school days. An old primer or two will be available to explore.
Bring a light lunch if you wish; free tea and coffee served.
Read to therapy dogs
At 6 p.m. Sept. 18 children are invited to the Library for BARK (Be a Reading Kid) to read to therapy dogs Thor and Cosmo, two St. Bernards.
Register ahead to insure your child has a 15-minute session of reading.
Writers' Round
At 6:30 p.m. Sept. 19 the Library will host Writers’ Round, a monthly creative writing workshop.  Bring your original works to share including poetry, prose, fiction, nonfiction, scripts, and more.
