"Halloween Hoopla" Happening Oct. 27

DERBY - The 16th Annual Children’s Health and Safety Fair will be “treating” families to Halloween fun on Fri., Oct. 27 from 3-7 p.m. at Warsaw Park on Pulaski Highway in Ansonia.
 
Griffin Hospital Community Outreach and Valley Parish Nurse Program, Safe Kids Greater Naugatuck Valley, Griffin Faculty Physicians, and Avangrid encourage families to put on their Halloween costumes and come to a “Halloween Hoopla,” featuring free healthy treats, games, and information on a variety of health, wellness and safety programs.
 
The event will be held rain or shine.
 
Interactive health, wellness and safety displays at the event will include poison prevention, good hand washing, and how to call 9-1-1. There will also be a bike helmet clinic and a safety house exhibit to teach about safety features in homes. Free, fitted bike helmets will be available for the first 500 children.

Valley Beer, Wine and Food Fest on Tap


ANSONIA - The Taste, a local beer, wine and food festival will take place beginning at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, March 19 at Warsaw Park, located on Pulaski Highway in Ansonia.

Tickets are $35 each in advance and $45 at the door. Proceeds will benefit Seymour Tradition softball. The price includes all food-beer-wine samples, and also includes a $10 credit voucher that can be used to purchase products that night.

If there’s a wine or beer that you enjoy, simply fill out the order forms that night, bring them to the GlenRo table and make the purchase. GlenRo will even make local deliveries if you can’t pick the items up at one of their two local locations.

There will be 22 tables of wine and beer, featuring more than 50 different wines and more than 40 beers to sample, along with a cigar table, food from eight local restaurants and more.
 
In addition to all of the food-wine-spirits, there is also live music. Casey Gorman will be strumming his six string that night, and playing songs that everyone knows.  The event will also feature raffles, including a chance to win a trip to Cabo.

The 14th Annual Children’s Health and Safety Fair will be “treating” families to Halloween fun this year.
 
Set for Oct. 30 from 3-8 p.m. at Warsaw Park on Pulaski Highway in Ansonia, families are encouraged to come in their Halloween costumes to a “Halloween Hoopla,” featuring free healthy treats, games, a show by Freakout Magician Chris Lengyel, along with a variety of health, wellness and safety programs. The event will be held rain or shine.
 
“The Halloween Hoopla will be a safe, family-friendly environment where children can do their trick-or-treating and the whole family can learn about important information that will keep them safe and healthy on Halloween and year-round,” said Daun Barrett, RN, Director of Griffin Hospital's Community Outreach and Valley Parish Nursing Program.
 
Interactive health, wellness and safety displays at the event will include poison prevention, good hand washing, how to call 911, and there will be a bike helmet clinic, the Child Identification Program (CHIP), fire engines and rescue vehicles, a safety house to teach about safety features in homes, and much more. Free bike helmets will be available for the first 500 children.

'Men Who Cook' ready to don aprons in Ansonia



7th annual event to benefit TEAM

ANSONIA - Join the fun and good times at the 7th annual “Men Who Cook” as it returns to the Valley April 26.  This is a unique spring evening out with friends and family at the Valley’s most popular event.
Let someone else cook while you enjoy a wide variety of dishes and desserts prepared by over 60 Valley Guys.  
The Men Who Cook are not professional chefs; they are dedicated community neighbors who want to share their cooking talents and camaraderie with you and your friends.

What’s on the menu? Go international with Bad Bandito Chili Verde, pulled pork tacos, bratwurst, empanadas, and unique pasta dishes.

Prefer grill food then wings, chili, and smoked turkey await you. 
If you are a sea foodie, try the seafood gumbo, scampi, shrimp and grits or Rhode Island chowder.  Sample the porketta, the comfort of chicken pot pie, and corned beef reuben dip. Remember to leave room for dessert with freshly baked chocolate chip layer bars, ginger cookies, key lime pie or fried oreos.

Fair in Ansonia to mark Week of the Young Child


ANSONIA - 

In celebration of the Week of the Young Child, April 6-12, the Eighth 
Annual Play & Learn Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 5 at Warsaw Park, 119 Pulaski Highway.

This free event is being 
underwritten through the generosity of the Valley Directors Network, 
the School Readiness Councils in Ansonia, Derby, Seymour and Shelton, 
the Early Childhood Task Force, and the Katharine Matthies Foundation.



“We are extremely excited to organize this popular family event for the community again,” said Sharon Kelley, Co-Chair of the Valley Directors Network.

“In years past, we have attracted crowds of over 1,000 people," Kelley said. "This year we want to make this free event even bigger and better than ever.”


The Play & Learn Fair will feature many fun, hands-on activities for 
children and their parents, including Touch A Truck and many 
exhibitors.
Early childhood providers will set up learning centers: 
including, art, blocks, math, music, science, sensory, and more.

An Infant & Toddler play space will be featured along with free snacks 
and informational handouts.


The theme for the 2014 Week of the Young Child Celebration is, “Early Years are Learning Years.”


This annual celebration is sponsored by the National Association for 
the Education of Young Children, the world’s largest early 
childhood education association.


The purpose of the Week of the Young Child is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.

Renaissance Faire to return to Ansonia

    ANSONIA - The Third Annual Midsummer Fantasy Renaissance Faire will be held the weekends of June 22-July 7 at Warsaw Park, 119 Pulaski Highway.

     Times are Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m.-6:30 p.m., with a special Saturday night show 7-9 p.m. with a Saturday admission.
     Admission is $16 for adults ages 15 and over, with discounted rates for children under 15, veterans, Peace Corps members, senior citizens (60+) and disabled.
     Group rates are available for 10 or more at $12 per person, and season passes are available for $52.

     Tickets may be purchased in advance online at www.MFRenFaire.com as well as at the gate.
     Inspire your imagination with comedy, action, games, stage shows, music, magic, live combat, food, unique vendors and a thrilling story line, which is the last of a three-part series.

TEAM's 'Men Who Cook' on tap in Ansonia

ANSONIA - This year marks the sixth annual 'Men Who Cook' and a sellout is expected.  The event  will be held from 6-11 p.m. Saturday at Warsaw Park, 119 Pulaski Highway.

Tickets are $55 a person. Purchase tickets by calling Trish Wigglesworth, 203-736-5420 x 221 or at www.teaminc.org. Tickets are not sold at the door.

For the ticket price you will be able to sample more than 50 varieties of food prepared by "Men Who Cook."
It also includes wine/beer or soda, dancing, a unique silent auction and raffle for a great "Valley" night out.

My co-worker Jean Falbo-Sosnovich has a story in the paper today about an event this Saturday in Ansonia that will no doubt be a lot of fun.

The second annual wine, beer and food "tasting" event benefits girls' softball in Seymour.

Sounds like a win-win.

ANSONIA - Men Who Cook will run from 6 to 11 p.m. April 20 at Warsaw Park, 119 Pulaski Highway.
Chairpersons are Charles Sullivan, David M. Grant, and Jeff Westine.

Seating is limited. Tickets are $55 a person. The price includes food, wine, beer, soda, and dancing.

Food presentation and silent auction are from 6-8 p.m.; dancing is 8-11 p.m.

Boy Scouts to host 'Sweetheart Dance'

Annual event benefits Troop 3 

ANSONIA - Troop 3, Derby, Boy Scouts of America, will host its annual "Sweetheart Dance” featuring the band “Flashback” from 8 p.m. until midnight Feb. 9 at Warsaw Park, 125 Pulaski Highway.

Cost is $20 a person (must be over 21). Bar set-ups, ice, and coffee are provided. Bring your own refreshments.
All proceeds will benefit Troop 3.
