Mother Nature abbreviates Ansonia concert

Simply Swing performs Wednesday at Veterans Park in Ansonia.

ANSONIA - Threatening skies cut short a performance by the 10-piece Simply Swing orchestra Wednesday night at Veterans Park.

The Newington-based band played classics from Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, and more for almost an hour in what would have been a two-hour show.

It was the last concert of the summer series sponsored by the Cultural Commission. The musicians said they would return to Ansonia next summer.

I'm looking forward to hearing them perform again, and no doubt many other audience members feel the same.

Summertime fun on tap at Ansonia concerts

ANSONIA - The Cultural Commission is sponsoring the city's annual Summer Concert Series starting in July with a line-up that is designed to appeal to all age groups, Commission Chairwoman Judy Nicolari said today. 

All concerts will start at 7 p.m. at Veterans Park next to City Hall on Main Street. Rain dates will be on the following nights. People should visit www.cityofansonia.com by 3 p.m. the day of the concert to check if it is postponed, Nicolari said.   

Concert goers are asked to bring their own lawn chairs, snacks, drinks, and of course their dancing shoes.

All  Funk'd Up, a Connecticut-based rhythm and blues band, will perform July 9.


The 102nd U.S. Army Band will perform July 23. "The band was a tremendous hit last summer so it is back by popular demand," Nicolari said. 

The August concert dates and performers are: Mark Lanzieri's Band, Aug. 6, The Bernadettes, Aug. 20 and Simply Swing, Aug. 27.
Nicolari said a surprise musician may perform at the last concert.

The concerts are being held in conjunction with the City's 125th Anniversary celebration.

Ansonia to light Christmas tree Friday

ANSONIA - The Cultural Commission will hold the city's annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Veterans Park next to City Hall on Main Street.

DJ Phyllis Kaplan will provide the music.


Hot chocolate, coffee and munchkins donated by Dunkin' Donuts will be served. 

Come and see Santa Claus make an appearance on a firetruck and make your Christmas wish on stage at Veterans Park. 

Santa will be posing for photos and the Ansonia High School chorus will be singing Christmas carols during the event.

Ansonia to hold decorating contest, Christmas tree lighting

ANSONIA - The Cultural Commission and the Valley Arts Council are co-sponsoring the "Annual Yard and House" decorating contest again this year.

Applications are available at www.cityofansonia.com. They are also available at the Ansonia Library, 56 South Cliff St.

The deadline for applicants is Dec. 9 and judging will be held between Dec. 14-17. All entrants are asked to leave their lights on from 6-8 p.m. during that time frame. 
Certificates will be awarded to all the winners at the Jan. 14 Board of Aldermen meeting.
The winners will be announced in area newspapers and on the city's website. 

The Commission and the Valley Arts Council will be judging this event.
The firehouses are invited to participate in the contest.

Ansonia resident performs Sinatra, Elvis, Bennett and more

Ansonia resident Mark Lanzieri performs Wednesday in his hometown, backed up by Joe Meo on saxophone, Joe Sullivan on drums and Joe McWilliams on piano. 

ANSONIA - The final concert of the Ansonia Cultural Commission's summer series was a big hit with fans of city resident Mark Lanzieri.

As a friend and Lanzieri fan who I was sharing a park bench with remarked, "I feel like he is singing to me, not for me."

I'm sure she wasn't the only one who felt that way. Lanzieri's repertoire is made up of classics that are crowd favorites. "Fly Me to the Moon," "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," "New York, New York,""Brown-Eyed Girl," and "My Way" are just a few.


Good job, Cultural Commission members. Looking forward to next year's concerts!

Local singer to do it his way

ANSONIA - The final concert of the Ansonia Cultural Commission's Summer Concert Series will be held from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Popular local talent Mark Lanzieri will sing classic favorites at Veterans’ Park on Main Street, next to City Hall.  

Bring a chair, some refreshments and friends for a fun night of listening and dancing.  

The Creamery of Oxford will be on site selling ice cream and the Friends of the Ansonia Library will be accepting donations of used or new books. 

Rain date will be Thursday.
