SHELTON - The Derby-Shelton Rotary Club Thursday presented the Parent Child Resource Center  with a check for $3,500 to support the Center’s Adolescent TRECC Program.

The TRECC (Training in Relationships and Emotional Competency for Children) Program focuses on children who are having difficulty meeting school, family or social expectations due to serious behavioral and social disturbances.

TRECC includes group therapy, family therapy, and art and drama therapies. PCRC’s TRECC program operates after school, three hours per day, five days per week.
Included are three separate age groups including the adolescent group, which the members have named the Teen Titans.

Common problems addressed in the adolescent group include depression, anxiety, self-harming behaviors, school avoidance, trauma, healthy relationships and parent child relational problems.
The funds from the Derby-Shelton Rotary Club will help pay for Parent Child Resource Center staff and program supplies for the adolescent group from April through June, 2014.

“We truly appreciate the ongoing support of the Derby-Shelton Rotary Club,” said the Center’s CEO Michael Wynne.
“Treating mental health problems in children can help save lives and restore hope for the children and their families.”

SHELTON - The Boys and Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley has received a $4,500 sponsorship from the Derby-Shelton Rotary Club to support its teen program for the first quarter of 2014.
The funds are being used for staff, supplies, and activities for teens who attend the Raymond P. Lavietes Clubhouse in Shelton.

“We are deeply grateful to the Derby-Shelton Rotary Club for sponsoring our Teen Room,” said Shaye Roscoe, Boys and Girls Club Executive Director.
“These kids need us—statistics show again and again that the hours of 3-6 pm are the “danger zone” for unsupervised youth. The Boys & Girls Club offers them a positive alternative to the streets, exposing them to a team committed to their success and programming designed to help them succeed in school and in life.
"We are able to provide this quality programming to our teens because of such civic-minded organizations as the Derby-Shelton Rotary Club.”

Derby-Shelton Rotary seeks host families in Derby

The Derby-Shelton Rotary Club is seeking three families in Derby to host an Exchange Student from France for the 2013-2014 academic year.

The 16-year old student has been accepted at Derby High School, where she will be a member of the junior class.
She speaks English, is a good student, likes to ride horses, is very athletic, enjoys Scouting and camping and would like to go to business school.
The Rotary Exchange Student Program has a very comprehensive set of policies for the behavior of incoming and outgoing students and their host homes, which includes restrictions on driving, drinking, drug use and school attendance.

There is no compensation to the families, though the Derby-Shelton Rotary Club will provide the student with a spending allowance to pay for activities.

Rotary District 7980 provides a local coordinator to check in with the student and family, and approximately once per month holds an event or trip for all of the Exchange Students in the area.
The host family does not need to have a child attending the high school though it is preferable that there are other children in the home.

If you would like to be considered for hosting a student in your home, or for more information, call Derby-Shelton Rotary Youth Exchange Officer Michael Wynne, 203-954-0543 ext. 112.

Rotarians dedicate pavilion in Shelton

Derby-Shelton Rotary Club President Mary Ellen Samatulski, second from left, Tuesday cuts a ceremonial ribbon at the club's new 3,000 square-foot pavilion at the Shelton Riverwalk. Next to her is Bertha Belden, the widow of longtime state Rep. Richard O. Belden, a lifelong Shelton resident who died in August 2007. The pavilion was a joint project of the Rotary Club and the city of Shelton. It was dedicated in Belden's memory. At left is Shelton Economic Development Corp. Rotarians plan event in new pavilion at Shelton Riverwalk

SHELTON - The Derby-Shelton Rotary Club is planning its first event at the newly created Derby-Shelton Rotary Pavilion on Canal Street.
Tickets are $30 a person and include German food, music, beer and wine.
They are available at TD Bank, Webster Bank, Jeff’s Appliance, Marks of Design and Smoke ‘n’ Bones BBQ.
The Derby-Shelton Rotary Pavilion (designed by Tate Associates) is a project that began in August 2008 when the very first Steak and Lobster Bake was held on the Riverwalk.
This event marked the beginning of a three-year fund raising campaign for the Pavilion.
The Derby-Shelton Pavilion is about building community, not just building a facility. This vibrant hub of our community will be dedicated to the memory of Richard O. Belden. It will be a destination where the community can meet, relax, learn and have fun together, providing diverse opportunities for new experiences and friendships.
Building the Pavilion on the Shelton Riverfront is a cooperative effort of the on Rotary Club, the City of Shelton, private donors and supporters.
Plan to join the Derby-Shelton Rotarians from 2-6 p.m. Sept. 16 (rain or shine).
For information contact Al Patuzzi at 203-929-3442. Visit www.derby-sheltonrotary.org to learn more.

Rotary's pavilion project progresses in Shelton

Work on the Riverwalk pavilion is moving along. Contributed photo
I received a press release Monday from Lauren Kazzi, vice president of image for the Derby-Shelton Rotary Club, about the progress being made on construction of a pavilion at the Shelton Riverwalk.
The Rotarians have raised funds for the project, which is a joint effort between the club and the city of Shelton.
I was there for the ceremonial groundbreaking in November 2010.

Here is the slightly-edited release:

The Shelton Riverwalk's latest project is almost finished. The Derby/Shelton Rotary Club, in partnership with the City of Shelton, is building a large pavilion for public use. The pavilion will be dedicated in memory of state Rep. Richard O. Belden, who died in August 2007.
The design and construction phases of the project are being overseen by Jim Tate of Shelton, who also designed the Farmers' Market nearby.

The Shelton Economic Development Corporation has also played an important role in keeping the project moving forward.
Heavy work will continue on the building until mid-July. The pavilion will be available for use sometime in September, after all of the finishing touches have been made to the landscaping.

I was amazed at how much work was completed in three weeks.
I took the photo of the foundation (below) June 2 while attending the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life at the Riverwalk.

Truth be told, I forgot to post it.

The Rotary Club and city officials involved with the construction should be commended. The pavilion will be a great venue for community gatherings in the not-too-distant future.

Club seeks 3 host families for exchange student

The Derby-Shelton Rotary Club is seeking three families in Derby to host an Exchange Student from Turkey for the 2012-2013 academic year.
The student has been accepted at Derby High School, where he will be a member of the junior class.

The Exchange Program is overseen by Rotary District 7980, and has a very comprehensive set of policies for the behavior of incoming and outgoing students and their host homes, that includes restrictions on driving, drinking, drug use and school attendance.

Rather than ask one family to host a student for an entire year, each family is asked to host the student for approximately three and one half months.
Exchange Students are not allowed go on trips independently without adult supervision, though they are encouraged to get involved in social activities with other youth in the school they are attending.
The host family does not need to have a child attending the high school though it is preferable there are other children in the home.
The Turkish Exchange Student is 16, speaks English and is a good student. Travel arrangements must be made soon
If interested, call Michael Wynne, Youth Exchange Officer, Derby-Shelton Rotary Club, 203.954-0543 ext. 112, or at mwynne@LNVPCRC.org.
