Derby Public Lirbrary Hosts Summer Events


DERBY- The Derby Public Library welcomes Shawn Peterson, author of PEZ: From Austrian
Invention to American Icon, on Monday, July 24 at 6:30 PM.  
 
Shawn is the company archivist and historian at PEZ Candy, Orange, CT where he also manages the visitor center.  Come and learn how receiving Pez dispensers in Easter baskets and Christmas stockings as a kid, led to becoming his life’s work, 26 years later.  PEZ brand is available in over 80 countries, selling more than 65 million dispensers annually and inspiring collectors and fans worldwide.  Join the world’s first and only official PEZ historian for an inside look at the world’s most cherished interactive candy.  Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

The Derby Public Library has scheduled its next Lunchtime Book Discussion for
Wednesday, July 26 at 12:30 PM.  The selected title is the compelling novel Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly.  
 
Spanning more than twenty years in the lives of three women and based on real people and events, Kelly’s debut novel brings historical facts to life.Caroline is a former Broadway actress and New York socialite who works with the French consulate.  Herta is an ambitious young German doctor, and Kasia is a 15-year-old Polish girl just getting involved in the resistance.  As WWII progresses, circumstances draw these women together, resulting in a story that will linger well after the book ends.  
 
The author will skype in for the discussion.

The American Job Search Career Coach returns to the Derby Public Library on Friday,
July 21 from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.  
 
During both the morning session, 10-12, and the  afternoon session, 1-3, instructors will be offering the class, Using Social Networking in Your Job Search.  Both sessions will explain very useful tools that job seekers need today.  Social Networking has become one of the most popular ways of landing your next “big” job by creating useful connections on-line.  These connections make it easier to look for a job on-line through your created network.  The classes are free and open to the public.

Retired Derby Police Chief-turned-Author to Discuss Latest Book May 23

DERBY - Retired Derby Police Chief turned Author, Andrew L. Cota,, will appear at a book signing Monday, May 23 at Derby Public Library, 313 Elizabeth St.


Cota, who has penned two books, his most recent one "Whitestone," will be the subject of the book discussion/signing, which begins at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

Cota's other book is "Through the Lens of an Old Man." He also drew the cover art for both books. Cota's love of art also includes wood carving, with his most notable work being the carving on the Sterling Opera House on Elizabeth Street.

Derby Library to host book discussion

DERBY - The Derby Public Library has scheduled its next Lunchtime Book Discussion for 12:30 p.m. July 30. 
The selected title is Island Girls by Nancy Thayer. 
This bestselling summer read is highly emotional and wholly entertaining.   

When the will of a recently deceased ladies’ man mandates a summer-long reunion for his daughters from different marriages at his posh Nantucket house, the three sisters are forced to confront long-festering resentments and misunderstandings as well as challenges in their private and professional lives. 
The situation is further complicated by a shocking revelation and the arrival of their mothers.

Derby library to host book talk

       DERBY - The Derby Public Library has scheduled its next Lunchtime Book Discussion
for 12:30 p.m. June 25.
      The selected title is Palisades Park by Alan Brennert.    
      This bestselling novel is the story of a family of dreamers and their lives within the legendary Palisades Amusement Park.   
   
    Brennert grew up in the shadows of this New Jersey amusement park and wrote the book as a love letter to Palisades and a bygone age. 

     It opens in 1922 and closes in 1977, tracing the ups and downs of this classic park during its heyday, along with the Stopka family’s similarly variable fortunes.

Derby Public Library plans book talk

DERBY - The Derby Public Library hosts YA Wednesdays each month from 6-7 p.m.

All young adults ages 12 to 17 are invited to gather May 14 for Teen Book Talk when participants chat about titles they have recently read.

This venue will focus on sharing reviews and opinions on a variety of titles, as well as provide a means to decide upon future reading.

Light refreshments will be provided. Registration is requested.

Derby Neck offers movies, games, book discussion, birthday celebration

DERBY - Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave., hosts Dinner and a Movie at 5:30 p.m. May 1 for adults ages 18 and older.  
Watch a high-definition recent movie on our large screen and enjoy a free pizza dinner at intermission. 
This program occurs each month. This month’s feature film will be interesting and entertaining.

Ancient Games
The Library presents Ancient Games at 6 p.m. May 6.
This free program for teens and adults offers instruction in the games of Go, Mahjong, Parcheesi, and Mancala.  All game boards and pieces are provided by the library. 
Bring a friend or relative and enjoy new fun strategy challenges. 

Music and Movement
At 6:30 p.m. May 14 join Miss Kathi for the monthly children’s program, Bedtime Music and Movement.  Wear your pajamas and bring a favorite stuffed animal to dance and sing along with you.

Celebrating Frances Kellogg; author to sign books
At 6 p.m. May 15 join the Library staff in celebrating the birthday of our donor, Frances Osborne Kellogg. 
Vicki Kain, noted Derby author of “Travels with Judy,” which chronicles her journeys in the U.S. with her dog, will describe her writing and sign copies of her book. 

After her presentation,  the library will host an open-mic session for participants to read from their original works—poetry, prose, non-fiction, sketches, or such. 
Birthday cake to celebrate Kellogg will be served to round out the evening.  

Women's group
Women’s Forum, a discussion group for women focusing on literature, history, and current issues will be held at 12:30 p.m. May 19. This month we discuss two short stories by Noel Coward—“Traveler’s Joy” and “Stop Me if You’ve Heard This.”  
Free copies of the two stories are available at the library. Come enjoy the brisk, biting, and sometimes whimsical humor of  Coward.  Feel free to bring a light lunch. Free coffee and tea. 

 Teen movie
All teens and tweens are invited to Teen Movie Night at 5:30 p.m. May 20.
Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave.  This month’s feature is “I Frankenstein” shown in high definition on a large screen.  
A free pizza supper is served at intermission. Registration is required as seating is limited. 

Tech Talks
At 10:30 a.m. May 21 the Library will host Tech Talks.
This month’s topic is Internet Searching - featuring some basic tips on refining your searches as well as a highlight of some new technological features.  Registration is required.


Read to canines
Children are invited to the  Library at 6 p.m. May 21 to read to Thor and Bailey, two listening dogs.  
This monthly program called B.A.R.K. (Be a Reading Kid), which promotes good reading skills in children.

DERBY - The Derby Public Library has scheduled its next Lunchtime Book Discussion for

The selected title is The Burgess Boys by Elizabeth Strout.

Derby Library slates holiday book talk

DERBY - The Derby Public Library has scheduled a special Holiday Lunchtime Book
Discussion at 12:30 p.m. Dec. 4.

The selected title is "Pearl Harbor Christmas: A World at War, December 1941" by Stanley Weintraub.

This is a vivid 11-day account of perhaps the most remarkable holiday season of the 20th century. 

Christmas came a little more than two weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

While Americans attempted to go about celebrating as usual, the shock and reality of the just-declared war was on everyone’s mind.

Weintraub gives great insight into the remarkable meeting of President Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, together lighting the White House Christmas tree, while also mapping out a winning wartime strategy.

This is a moving account of what it was like to live through a holiday season few would ever forget.
