Golf Event to Help Local Family
Treasured Time, Inc. is hosting its inaugural “Driving for Memories” Golf Outing to help a Stratford family make lasting memories.
The Stanton Family will be the featured family and “Gift of Moments” recipients for the event. Tim Stanton, 46, was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer in February 2017. At the time of his diagnosis, it had spread to his liver and lymph nodes. Stanton had a 10 cm mass from surgically removed his colon in March, along with 10 inches of his colon and 17 of 25 lymph nodes. At the time of his diagnosis in February, the tumor mass on his colon was measuring at 6 cm, indicating this is a fast growing cancer.
Stanton started chemo in April. He had the choice to start with a more basic chemo but opted to go for a more aggressive form of treatment. He had four rounds on this aggressive chemo and unfortunately his scans showed negative results. There were no improvements to his colon or his liver metastases. If the next set of scans do not show favorable results, he will begin exploring clinical trials that may help to slow down the progression of the cancer.
Stanton has three children Alanna, age 24, and twin boys Blake and Lucas, age 6. His eldest daughter Alanna is a huge support, taking him to doctor’s appointments and helping with her brothers and chores around the house. Stanton’s wife, Missy, can’t take much time off since she just started a new job.
Stanton and his family spend much of their time creating memories together. Stanton would love the opportunity to take his family to Disney World and explore the magic it has to offer before he is unable to.
Driving For Memories will be Wed., Sept. 13 at Whitney Farms Golf Course in Monroe. This is a rain or shine event with a shotgun start at noon. The cost is $125 per person and includes a dinner reception and auction after golf. Tickets for just the dinner reception and auction are $50 per person.
To register, visit treasuredtime.org. Registrations will be on a first-come, first serve basis.
Treasured Time, Inc. is a CT based 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to grant the wishes of parents with life threatening illnesses who want to create a lasting memory with their children. With your help, Treasured Time, Inc. can provide families with the “Gift of Moments.” To see how you can help us make a difference, visit treasuredtime.org.

New restaurant serves paninis, pancakes, omelettes and more
Trumbull now has its own Chips, no. 3 in the chain
OK, I realize that the newest Chips Family Restaurant is in Trumbull, and not the Valley.
But it's on Route 111, and when you drive north you enter Monroe, which is next to Shelton, which IS in the Valley. So it's all good, right?
Anyhow, today my husband and I accepted a free lunch invitation (minus the tip for our friendly server) from an Ansonia friend who is employed there.
It was a "practice day" for the staff and employees were allowed to invite friends and family. And we are glad our friend invited us! It was a delicious and filling lunch.
When we arrived just after noon the place was packed.
It was difficult to decide what to order, but I finally went with a Mediterraean Panini, pictured below, and some coffee.
I've been trying to eat healthier and I haven't had French fries in forever, so they tasted great.
Greasy, but great.
The panini featured grilled chicken breast, mozzarella cheese, roasted red peppers, and pesto on sourdough bread. I had my choice of white, rye, sourdough or honey wheat bread. It came with a pickle and a dash of cole slaw.
Ralph ordered the chef's omelette that was filled with sausage, mushrooms, green peppers, Bermuda onions, tomatoes, and feta cheese.
The verdict? "It was excellent," he told me. He enjoyed the rye toast accompaniment as well as the coffee.
Restaurant consultant Chris Danas said the "friends and family" day was held Monday "to give the kitchen a dry run and work out some kinks."
The diner-style restaurant will open for breakfast Tuesday for its first day of business.
George Chatzopoulos, a Greek immigrant, owns all three Chips restaurants. They are located in Orange, Fairfield and Trumbull.
On Monday the staff was accepting donations for a worthy cause: Swim Across the Sound. The annual swim raises funds for the St. Vincent's Medical Center Foundation.
If you've been to either of the other two Chips (I've been to the Orange location many times) you'll find the same quality food and friendly service.

Teamwork is key to helping special needs students in Ansonia
![]() |
| A sign describes the theme of a mural at Prendergast School in Ansonia. Patricia Villers/Register |
Last week I visited John G. Prendergast Elementary School in Ansonia to learn about a tile mural, and also about life.
Special needs students, peer mentors, and teachers, created an Autism Awareness mural under the direction of Monroe artist Kathy Vincent.
The project, which special education teacher Eugenie O'Callaghan said took a few months to complete, was funded by a grant from the Orange-based Jamie A. Hulley Arts Foundation.
The foundation gave the school $1,500 to work with students in the creation of two murals. The second one features the Six Pillars of Character. It was made by members of the school's Character Counts club.
O'Callaghan proudly showed me the outstanding Autism Awareness mural before introducing me to her students, who are all diagnosed with moderate to severe forms of autism.
I was touched to see that despite their disabilities the students were able to create key elements for the mural and add to its beauty.
I encourage area residents to visit the school to view the works of art installed there.
No doubt you'll be inspired.
