Store history focus of talk at Derby Library

DERBY - The Derby Public Library will host a talk, From Hula Hoops to High Fashion: G. Fox Company in the 1950s at 6:30 p.m. July 28.  

Elizabeth Abbe, Director of Public Outreach at the Connecticut Historical Society, will be your guide down memory lane, with a look at Connecticut’s favorite department store. 

She will take you back, floor by floor, to the days when Fox was the largest privately-owned store in the United States and the customer was always right.   

Insight will also be given on the life of Beatrice Fox Auerbach, the remarkable woman who set the standard for customer service.   

There will also be a display of clothing, furniture, and photographs. Participants are encouraged to bring their memories along with a favorite purchase of their own to share.

Derby Public Library to host state history program

Spotlight on strange but true episodes
DERBY - The Derby Public Library will host the intriguing state history program, It Really

Happened in Connecticut at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 30.

           Diana Ross McCain, Head of Research at the Connecticut Historical Society, will share several of the strange but true episodes featured in her books, It Happened in Connecticut and Mysterious Legends of New England. 

          Topics will include witchcraft trials and executions, a mysterious vagabond who walked his way into Connecticut wearing a 60-pound suit of leather, and a serial killer who inspired a hit movie. 

         Copies of McCain's books will be available for purchase and autographing after her presentation. Registration is requested.
