Storm update from Seymour first selectman

Text of Code Red announcement minutes ago:

"This is Seymour First Selectman Kurt Miller with a Storm update utilizing the Code Red System. 

Department of Public Works Crews, along with additional outside contractors, continue to plow our roads. 

 This process is taking much longer than normal due to the volume of snow that fell. Because of this heavy volume, we are not able to use our full complement of trucks as the smaller vehicles are not able to move enough snow. 

We do have all of our large trucks out on the road, but they too are having trouble and many have actually been getting stuck. Please keep in mind that these trucks do need to break off of their routes to assist our police, fire and ambulance crews when a call comes in. All of this is causing the process of plowing snow to be much slower and more time consuming than normal. 

Crews will be working around the clock trying to clear as many roads as possible. I expect that this process will go on well into tomorrow evening. I do understand that many residents are frustrated with this, but I am asking for your patience. 

I can assure you Public Works is doing all that it can to get the roads open with all of the challenges they are facing. Our goal is to have the roads passable for Monday morning. 

I will provide more information tomorrow and an updated time frame. As a side note, those of you who heat your homes with gas, please make sure you are taking the time to clear your vents and please use care with fireplaces, wood stoves and BBQs. 

As you can imagine, it is very difficult to get our fire trucks up certain roads at this point. Thank you and please have a safe night."

Kurt Miller's code red announcement; roads impassable

This is Seymour First Selectman Kurt Miller with a storm update utilizing the Code Red System. Heavy snowfall overnight has left all roads in Seymour impassable. 

 

While Public Works has done its best to try and keep up, they were no match for the volume of snow that fell in such a short period of time. 

 

We had several issues overnight of trucks being stuck and needing to be pulled out. At this point, we are focusing on the main arteries of town with our larger trucks. 

 

Once we have those open, we will start to work on more of the side streets. The town will be bringing in some private contractors to assist in opening the roads as quickly as we can. This process will take many hours to accomplish. 

 

Please don’t think your road is being ignored or forgotten. We need to do this in a systematic fashion to make sure it is safe for everyone, especially our public works drivers. I am asking that all residents stay in their homes and do not attempt to travel. 

 

Other communities are facing the same issues as is the state with our highway system. Our Emergency Management team will be speaking again at 10 a.m. to determine next steps. Should you have the need for emergency assistance, please contact the Seymour Police Department at 203-881-7600.
