DERBY - The Griffin Hospital School of Allied Health Careers, 300 Seymour Ave., Suite 206, is offering classes for its fall Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program.

The School of Allied Health Careers is offering a day session for its CNA program with classes on Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. starting Nov. 4.

The CNA course offers students an affordable and condensed schedule. Course content includes infection control, legal and ethical responsibilities, communications, body mechanics, moving and positioning residents, personal care skills, nutrition, measuring vital signs, and restorative care. The program’s clinical experience is at a long term care facility and Griffin Hospital for a total of 40 hours. 

After successfully completing the course and clinical experience, students will be qualified to take the certification exam for a Nursing Assistant in Connecticut. The CNA course tuition fee includes the course book, CPR training, liability insurance and the 40 hour clinical rotation.

Anyone 18 years of age or older with a high school diploma or GED may apply for admission. Early application is 

encouraged for all courses, as space is limited.

Train at Griffin for a Medical Career

DERBY - The Griffin Hospital School of Allied Health Careers, at 300 Seymour Avenue, Suite 206 in Derby, is offering classes for its fall Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Patient Care Technician (PCT) and Phlebotomy programs.

 

The evening session for the CNA program starts Sept. 11, and the day PCT program and the Phlebotomy program begin Sept 12. The accelerated CNA course offers students an affordable and condensed six-week schedule with classes Monday through Thursday from 5-9 p.m. Course content includes infection control, legal and ethical responsibilities, communications, body mechanics, moving and positioning residents, personal care skills, nutrition, measuring vital signs, and restorative care. The program’s clinical experience is at a long term stay facility and Griffin Hospital from 5-10 p.m. for a total of 40 hours.

 

After successfully completing the course and clinical experience, students will be qualified to take the certification exam for a Nursing Assistant in Connecticut. The CNA course tuition fee includes the course book, CPR training, and malpractice insurance coverage for the clinical rotation.

 

The 16-week PCT program requires students to attend practical training on Mondays and Fridays from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., and have the option to take the Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday Phlebotomy classes either during the day from 9 a.m.-noon or during the evening from 6-9 p.m. The PCT program offers ample hands-on training and opportunities for practical experience in the school's fully equipped mock hospital room and during the 160 hours of clinical experience. The course tuition includes textbook, malpractice insurance, CPR certification, and national certification.

 

The 13-week Phlebotomy program holds classes on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays with a daytime option of 9 a.m.-noon or an evening option of 6-9 p.m. The course tuition includes a 40-hour internship, national certification, lab coats, CPR certification, malpractice insurance and textbook.

Bridgeport Hospital staff honors Shelton resident

BRIDGEPORT – Bridgeport Hospital marked Nurses Week earlier this month with a series of recognition events and activities for its 700-member nursing staff.

Diane Youd of Shelton received the 2014 Nurse Manager of the Year Award from the Bridgeport Hospital Medical Staff during a reception at Ralph and Rich’s Restaurant in Bridgeport. 

Youd oversees the SurgEase ambulatory surgery center as well as the labor and delivery unit.

Chairman of Anesthesia Kenneth Stone, M.D. and Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynecology Harold Sauer, M.D., were among those who paid tribute to Youd at the event.

“You are dedicated to your role but have never lost sight of patient care,” Stone said to Youd. “You have a real sense of your mission and treat your colleagues in a respectful manner.”

“You are fair and have earned the respect of both physicians and staff,” Sauer added.

Youd joined the hospital in 1985, working first in the main operating room. She moved to SurgEase in 1990 and became the SurgEase nurse manager in 2005. 

During the past year, she took on the added role of interim nurse manager in labor and delivery.

On receiving the award, Youd said, “I never expected it. I’m truly grateful to the medical staff for being recognized, and I thank the entire team around me for their help and support. I could not succeed without them.”

More than a dozen other nurses were recognized for outstanding performance during Bridgeport Hospital’s Professional Practice of Nursing Awards ceremony at the hospital. 

They included: Brooke Barbee of Stratford, Cardiology; Kara Burdick of Bridgeport, Internal Medicine; Tobias Breuing of Newtown and Karen Reyes-Benzi of East Haven, Oncology; Cecilia Coehlo of Seymour, Major Surgery; Ken Forte of Milford and Marlene Schmidt of Shelton, Emergency Department; Dana Genarelli of Oakville, Operating Room; Jim Haddon of New Haven, Psychiatry; Britany Najarian of Shelton, Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital Bridgeport campus; Laura Neumon of Milford, Ahlbin Centers Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit; Jessica Orama of Newtown, Resource Support Unit; and Dorett Thomas of Bridgeport, Women’s Care Center.

“I believe I lead one of the strongest nursing teams in the nation,” Chief Nursing Officer MaryEllen Kosturko said at the ceremony. “I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the work you do.”
