Rescue Pet Calendar For Sale

SEYMOUR- First Selectman Kurt Miller received his "hot off the press" 2018 calendar featuring dogs and cats available for adoption at the Seymour-based CARES animal rescue shelter. The precious pets are featured alongside members of Seymour's Fire Department, who teamed up with CARES for the worthwhile fundraiser. The calendar features 12 months of rescues and rescuers, including Charlie the lab, sporting a red plastic fireman’s hat, perched behind the wheel of a fire truck. Calendars are available for sale by visiting this link:

Seymour First Selectman Loses Taco Bet; Washes TEAM's Fleet of Delivery Vans

SEYMOUR - First Selectman Kurt Miller on Tuesday, June 20, made good on a bet he lost to TEAM Inc.'s President/CEO David Morgan, and spent two hours washing TEAM's Meals on Wheels food delivery trucks

Miller cleaned and polished several trucks in the parking lot of Hot Tamale's Mexican Bar & Grill.

The bet between Miller and Morgan happened last month during a charity taco-eating contest held at Hot Tamale's to raise money for the Meals on Wheels programs, which delivers nutritional meals directly to the front doors of the Valley's elderly folks and shut-ins.

According to TEAM officials, the Meals on Wheels program has taken a financial hit, thus being able to provide fewer amount of meals to those who request the service.

Free Solar Workshop for Seymour Residents June 6

SEYMOUR - Solarize Seymour will hold an informational workshop at 6 pm on Tuesday, June 6^th at Microboard Processing Inc., 36 Cogwheel Lane. Residents who are interested in learning more about Solarize Seymour are urged to attend. To participate in the benefits offered through the program, residents must sign a solar contract by August 16, 2017.

Solarize Seymour is part of Solarize Connecticut, a residential solar program that is intended to make going solar easy and affordable. It is supported by the Town of Seymour. PurePoint Energy will provide solar installations in Seymour at a special discounted rate in exchange for education and outreach efforts from the town. Solarize Seymour also offers residents access to special financing options that make going solar affordable with no upfront costs.  Other financing resources are also available.

“The Town of Seymour is excited to bring the Solarizes program to Seymour,” said First Selectman, Kurt Miller. “Solarize is a great opportunity for homeowners and businesses to invest in their home and save on their ever-rising utility bills. Make sure to stop by one of our events to see how much you can save by going solar!”

Breakfast to benefit Seymour fire company

April 14 is Citizens Engine Company #2's New England Family Breakfast to be held from 7:30 a.m.-noon at 26 Deforest St., Seymour.

Tickets are $7 for adults; $4 for children under 12.

Sidewalk ordinance to go back into effect

"Due to the severity of the storm, the Town's sidewalk snow clearing ordinances were temporarily suspended. However, due to safety concerns with pedestrians, the ordinances will go back into effect Friday, February 22 at 8:00 AM.

Please make sure to have any sidewalks on your property cleared by then to avoid being ticketed!"

Seymour superintendent speaks to parents

Message from the Superintendent: 

Dear Parents,

Over the past several days many of you have shared suggestions on how to manage this unprecedented situation we are experiencing with school closings. As you can imagine not all the suggestions were the same and therefore any decision that the Board of Education makes would be welcomed by some and unwelcomed by others. I wish that I knew of a way to make everyone happy and I genuinely appreciated all your suggestions.

At a special meeting of the Board of Education this evening [Wednesday] the BOE changed the 2012-2013 school calendar. The change to the calendar eliminated the winter break and therefore our schools will be open on Monday and Tuesday, February 18 and 19.
With the addition of those two days that means the last day of school is currently June 27. I would love to tell you that there will be no more closings this school year however it is too soon to state that.

If as a family you had plans scheduled for Monday and Tuesday I would suggest that you not alter those plans. Time with family is important, family adventures are opportunities for learning and are an important element of our children’s lives. If your child is not able to attend school due to something that you already had planned I want to assure you that your son/daughter’s teacher will be accommodating. Your child will not be penalized. I ask that you just notify the school in the manner that you typically would that your child is not able to attend school.

State statute does permit schools to open on legal holidays with the exception of legal holidays in the months of December and January. I know some people thought that we would violate a law if we had school on Monday so I wanted to clarify.

I will contact you again tomorrow with an update for Friday and I will provide you with some additional information.

 "Due to the fact that many roads still have only one lane cleared, it is still not safe for large vehicles like garbage trucks and school buses to drive around town. As such, garbage pickup remains suspended. When it is resumed, a Code Red message will be issued. 

"The Board of Education will meet tonight to discuss whether it's safe to open school tomorrow. More information will be forthcoming."

This includes all basketball games and practices, Yoga class, Family Swim Night and Pre-school Craft Class.

Trekking through 2-5 foot snow drifts and shoveling their way to assist patients in need. Combined they volunteered about 1300 hours since the start of things on Friday. We are very fortunate to have such a dedicated group of people."

"This is Seymour First Selectman Kurt Miller with a storm update utilizing the Code Red System.

I would like to start first by thanking our Department of Public Works crews for the tireless effort they have put in since Friday. Most of them have worked around the clock with very little sleep to complete this extremely difficult job. They, along with the members of the Seymour Police, Fire and EMS have once again step up to the challenging times to make Seymour safe. 

I am very appreciative of all that they have done for us.

 

The town has completed the process of opening just about every road. We do have a few roads left that require a bulldozer to finish. It is currently making its way to the different areas. 

We are now in the process of widening and cleaning roads as well as opening up intersections. This process will take most of today and well into tomorrow. 

As we do this, snow will be pushed back toward and potentially into people’s driveways. I wish this was not the case, but it must be done in order to move the snow out of the lanes of traffic. With the potential of more snow tomorrow night, we need to get as much done today and tomorrow as we can. I will be out with the trucks the rest of the day making sure we are getting everything done. 

 

As a reminder, I have suspended garbage pickup for the next few days to keep the cans from being in the street. 

 

Seymour Schools will be closed tomorrow but all municipal buildings will be open. I will provide one more update tonight with our progress. Thanks and have a great day."

"This is Seymour First Selectman Kurt Miller with a Storm update utilizing the Code Red System. 

Public Works crews along with several outside contractors have made tremendous progress today. 

While we have not opened every street yet, I expect that by tomorrow morning we should be very close. While we will be working again through the night, there are a few streets unfortunately that require special circumstances that we will not be able to accommodate until tomorrow. Those streets will get top priority. 

Once we have completed the process of opening the streets, we will begin the process of widening and cleaning them. I expect this process will take most of Tuesday and into Wednesday. As you know the streets at this point are quite narrow so I ask that if you need to be on the road, you please use caution especially when approaching an intersection. 

Seymour Public Schools will be closed tomorrow and more than likely on Wednesday as well. All municipal buildings will re-open tomorrow with the exception of the Library which will remain closed. 

I will be suspending garbage pick up until further notice and our Transfer Station will remain closed on Tuesday due to the conditions. Tomorrow, will we also begin the process of uncovering the fire hydrants. 

Any assistance by residents with this would be greatly appreciated. Finally, I have received many phone calls, emails, Facebook posts and texts. While I have done my best to try and call everyone back, I am behind because I spent so much time on the roads today out of the office. 

Please know we will be trying to touch base with everyone over the next few days. I know this has been a very difficult time for many folks, but I would like to say thank you for your continued patience as we worked through this process. Thank you and have a safe night."

"This is Seymour First Selectman Kurt Miller with a Storm update utilizing the Code Red System. Public Works Crews as well as several contractors are out doing the best that they can to plow. The change in weather has made the already difficult spots to plow even harder. 

We are trying to go as fast as possible but conditions are very challenging. We are bringing in as much additional equipment as we can. No roads have been forgotten. Again, I understand some folks are becoming very frustrated but this is a very difficult situation we are trying to work through. 

 Since my last message we have experienced some equipment break downs that we are currently repairing. At this point, I will not make any projections as to what will or won’t be accomplished by the end of the day as it is too hard to do with all of the outside factors. 

I will provide another update later this afternoon with as much information as I can. As a reminder, all Municipal Buildings are closed. While I will be out on the road most of the day trying to stay on top of things,

I am trying to field as many phone calls as I can. I will be trying to call back as many residents as possible who have left voice messages but I may not get to everyone today. 

 The Seymour Fire Department has asked me to mention that they are not able to remove snow from roofs. Thank you and please drive safely today."
