Derby Parish to Mark Feast of Corpus Christi

DERBY - On June 23 following the 11:30 a.m. Mass, Our Lady, Queen of the Apostles Parish invites (St. Mary and St. Jude Churches) the community to join them, and Derby Catholics from St. Michael’s Parish, for a Eucharistic Procession through downtown Derby to commemorate the Feast of Corpus Christi.

The procession will leave from St. Mary Church, 212 Elizabeth St. at approximately 12:15 p.m. (immediately after 11:30 a.m. Mass) making seven stops: 

St. Mary-St. Michael School, Hallock’s Landing, the Derby Green, Derby City Hall, Derby Elks Lodge, Civil War Memorial on the Green, and returning to the steps of St. Mary Church for benediction. 

Individuals unable to walk the route are invited to meet the group at each of these places.Each stop will allow time for prayer and reflection. Following the procession, refreshments will be served in St. Mary Church hall.

68th National Day of Prayer in Ansonia May 2

ANSONIA - The Ansonia community is invited to answer the call to prayer on Thursday, May 2^nd, in observance of the 68^th National Day of Prayer. 

The National Day of Prayer affords residents the opportunity to join together to pray for our country and its leaders, our town, our service men and women, and our people. It is one of our freedoms to gather and humbly ask for God’s healing and renewal for our Nation. 

Historically, this annual observance came about through a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress in 1952, signed into law by President Harry S. Truman; then the declaration was amended in 1988 by both Houses of Congress and signed by President Reagan, setting the permanent date for the National Day of Prayer on the first Thursday in May each year. Prayer gatherings will be taking place all day throughout our Nation. 

We are representing the Judeo-Christian expression of the NDP. The prayers will be led by local Clergy and Laymen – young and old(er), as we all join in faith and unity.

Our local Ansonia prayer gathering will take place outside at the Veterans Memorial Park - adjacent to City Hall, 253 Main Street, Ansonia, from 6:00-7:30 pm. In case of rain, the meeting will be moved indoors – Aldermanic Chambers. 


The theme for this year’s National Day of Prayer is “Love One Another”, taken from John 13:34 in which our Lord says “Love one another. Just as I have loved you.” We will be praying for our country, including our government, military, media, business, education, church, and family. Each year our prayer gathering has been honored and blessed to have local clergy, town officials, first responders, and veterans participate.

Please join us in praying for our great Nation. God’s love NEVER fails. Prayer changes things!!

Chocolate fest rescheduled in Seymour

SEYMOUR - Great Hill United Methodist Church will host its Fifth Annual Chocolate Festival from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 17, or while supplies last. The event was rescheduled from today because of the blizzard.     

         Chocolate lovers will receive an 8-7/8 inch plate on which they may place their choice of twelve fresh, homemade chocolate desserts and treats for cost of $5.

      All proceeds benefit the Missions and Ministry programs of the church.

MLK program in Ansonia uplifting, inspiring

On Monday my daughter and I attended an annual observance in Ansonia of the Martin Luther King Day holiday.

As in the past the program was sponsored by Ansonia Branch 2000 of the NAACP. This year it was held at Macedonia Baptist Church on Pershing Drive.

Members of the choir, Voices of Praise, perform.

We both enjoyed the uplifting music, and the speakers inspired us.

Special recognition must be given to an impressive Ansonia Middle School eighth grader.

Shamir Hughes, 13, read an essay about helping others.

Shamir reads his essay.

He exemplifies all that is good about the kids of today and he symbolizes hope for a brighter tomorrow.

I wish him the best in his future endeavors.

Ansonia event to celebrate legacy of MLK

ANSONIA - The Annual Martin Luther King Conference will present "Visions of the Dream," a celebration of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The free event will be held at noon Jan. 21, Martin Luther King Jr., Day, at Macedonia Baptist Church, 243 Pershing Drive.

The public is invited. There will be information provided for children and adults, entertainment, and exhibits.
Refreshments will be served.

Community dinner planned at Ansonia church

ANSONIA - Join Master's Table to enjoy a free community dinner and celebrate the holiday season from 4-5:30 p.m. Dec. 9 in the hall at Christ Church, 56 S. Cliff St.
Santa and one of his elves are expected to visit.  
Donations are gratefully accepted to help defray the cost of the monthly dinners.

Oxford church to hold service of Lessons and Carols

OXFORD - There will be a service of Lessons and Carols at 3 p.m. Dec. 16 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 421 Oxford Road.

Church social to feature ice cream, music

SEYMOUR - The Great Hill United Methodist Church Men's Club will present "Ice Cream - The Musical" next month.
This Great Family Event production will feature an old-fashioned ice cream social topped with great musical performances.
Only one show is scheduled on this East Coast tour and it will performed 3-5 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Great Hill United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 225 Great Hill Road.
The audience will have an opportunity to enjoy an ice cream sundae featuring vanilla or chocolate ice cream with an assortment of toppings.  The entire family will be able to sit back, enjoy their creamery delight and be entertained by several members of the “Companions” a local contemporary music group, Valley Performing Artists and the Great Hill Music Ministry.

Tickets are $6.  Reservations are suggested.

Art auction to benefit church

ANSONIA - Great Hill United Methodist Church, Seymour, will host an Art Auction May 18, with preview at 7 p.m. and auction at 8 p.m.
The benefit will be held at John  J. Sullivan’s restaurant, 557 Wakelee Ave.  Admission is $25 per person, and includes hot and cold hors d’oeuvres, two complimentary wine tickets, and cash bar.
    Marlin Art has a distinguished collection of art and memorabilia for everyone’s taste and price range. Approximately 160 pieces will be on hand.
