68th National Day of Prayer in Ansonia May 2

ANSONIA - The Ansonia community is invited to answer the call to prayer on Thursday, May 2nd, in observance of the 68th National Day of Prayer.

The National Day of Prayer affords residents the opportunity to join together to pray for our country and its leaders, our town, our service men and women, and our people. It is one of our freedoms to gather and humbly ask for God’s healing and renewal for our Nation.

Historically, this annual observance came about through a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress in 1952, signed into law by President Harry S. Truman; then the declaration was amended in 1988 by both Houses of Congress and signed by President Reagan, setting the permanent date for the National Day of Prayer on the first Thursday in May each year. Prayer gatherings will be taking place all day throughout our Nation.

We are representing the Judeo-Christian expression of the NDP. The prayers will be led by local Clergy and Laymen – young and old(er), as we all join in faith and unity.

Our local Ansonia prayer gathering will take place outside at the Veterans Memorial Park - adjacent to City Hall, 253 Main Street, Ansonia, from 6:00-7:30 pm. In case of rain, the meeting will be moved indoors – Aldermanic Chambers.

The theme for this year’s National Day of Prayer is “Love One Another”, taken from John 13:34 in which our Lord says “Love one another. Just as I have loved you.” We will be praying for our country, including our government, military, media, business, education, church, and family. Each year our prayer gathering has been honored and blessed to have local clergy, town officials, first responders, and veterans participate.

Please join us in praying for our great Nation. God’s love NEVER fails. Prayer changes things!!

For further information on the National Day of Prayer and other event locations, please see the official website: http://www.nationaldayofprayer.org. (The town events are listed according to the time they will take place.)

Klarides Sisters Renew Call to Provide Tax Relief for Disabled Veterans

HARTFORD - House Republican Leader Themis Klarides and her sister State Rep. Nicole Klarides-Ditria are continuing to fight to pass legislation that helps disabled veterans.

House Bill 5231 will allow municipalities, with their legislative body's approval, to freeze property taxes on homes owned by certain disabled veterans and their spouse or surviving spouse.  To be eligible, the veteran must have a service-connected disability and either the veteran or spouse must have lived in Connecticut for at least one year.

House Republican Leader Themis Klarides said, "In these difficult economic times, we are aware that municipalities are struggling financially. That is why this bill was written to provide towns and cities an option to offer this opportunity rather than mandate it."

Rep. Klarides continued, "Veterans who are injured as a result of their service live on fixed incomes and freezing their property taxes will help make living in our state more affordable."

Rep. Klarides-Ditria added, "Letting our local governments decide to freeze taxes for disabled veterans is something they should be allowed to do. Disabled veterans deserve this tax relief, and I will continue to fight to get this legislation passed."

The Veterans' Affairs Committee passed this legislation unanimously. Before the bill can become law it must pass both the House and Senate.

Seymour Students Send Care Packages to Soldiers

SEYMOUR- The Seymour Middle School 6th grade social studies classes, led by Ashley Castaldi and Chris Alcutt, sponsored a care package drive to collect items such as toiletries, snacks, and K-9 supplies for soldiers who are currently deployed overseas.

The purpose of this drive was to promote good citizenship, volunteerism, and to participate in an activity that promotes social awareness. This activity was centered on the celebration of veterans. The students were able to understand what sacrifices soldiers make, such as not having access to everyday items that they may take for granted. The care packages were sent to 6th grade teacher Dina Garrow’s brother-in-law’s Unit currently stationed in Afghanistan.
