Free Program on Meditation

DERBY - Griffin Hospital, 130 Division St., Derby, is helping individuals refresh their spirits for spring with a free program on meditation from 6-7 p.m. on Thurs., April 26.
 
Janice Lautier, director of Spiritual Care and Education, will host “Finding Balance,” an interactive program about the benefits and styles of meditation that can help participants balance and settle themselves - especially during chaotic times. There will be group discussion and experiential learning as well as guidance on how to start a daily meditation practice.
 
This talk is part of Griffin Hospital's Healthy U Talks, a series of free wellness talks featuring Griffin Hospital medical experts and community partners providing trusted health information and answers to questions on a wide range of topics.

Diabetes Support Group to Discuss Low Vision

DERBY - The Diabetes Education & Support Group at Griffin Hospital will host two free presentation about low vision on Tues., Nov. 14 at 2:30 p.m. and 6: 30 p.m. at the hospital, 130 Division St., Derby.
 
Leslie Prescott and Fran Harmeyer, occupational therapists from Griffin Hospital Rehabilitation Services and the Lions Low Vision Center at Griffin Hospital, will present “Diabetes and Low Vision Occupational Therapy.”
 
Low vision is a chronic medical condition affecting 1 in 6 adults over 45 years of age usually caused by macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma. Occupational therapy teaches persons with visual impairment to safely and independently complete the daily living tasks, and the Lions Low Vision Center offers adaptive devices free of charge.
 
The presentations will be in the hospital’s Childbirth Education Classroom A. There will be free valet parking for the 2:30 p.m. session.
 
The Diabetes Education & Support Group meets September - June on the second Tuesday of each month to discuss the management of diabetes, its challenges, and day-to-day dietary concerns. Individuals with diabetes and their caregivers are welcome to attend.

Healing Workshop Offered at Griffin Hospital



DERBY - Griffin Hospital will offer a basic level Soft Touch workshop June 10 from 1 to 4 p.m. June 10 at the hospital, 130 Division St.

Soft Touch is a therapeutic, relaxing, and gentle massage that can be given to an individual's hands, feet, or back. Griffin Hospital offers variations of this therapy to patients and their caregivers as a way to reduce their anxiety, pain, and stress.
 
The workshop is led by Licensed Massage Therapist Joanne Halstead, R.N., BSN, and Physical Therapist Nancy Corvigno, MSPT, PRPC. This basic-level training includes a demonstration of various Soft Touch techniques as well as opportunity for hands-on practice.
 
The cost is $30. There are no prerequisites to attend the workshop and it is open to the public.Space is limited and sign-ups are due by June 1. Contact Laura Murphy, Planetree Services supervisor, at 203-732-7466 to enroll.

Griffin Hospital to offer soft touch workshop

DERBY - Griffin Hospital is offering individuals an opportunity to help relieve stress for their loved ones and hospital patients through a Soft Touch workshop from noon to 3 p.m. Oct. 20.
Soft Touch is a therapeutic, relaxing and gentle rub that can be given to an individual's hands, feet, or back. 
Griffin Hospital offers the therapy to patients and their caregivers as a way to reduce their anxiety, pain and stress.
Taught by a Griffin Hospital nurse who is also a licensed massage therapist, this basic-level training includes a demonstration of various Soft Touch techniques as well as opportunity for hands-on practice. There are no prerequisites to attend the workshop. It is open to the public. 
The workshop cost $25 for the public, but is free to Griffin Hospital employees and volunteers.
Space is limited, so early registration is required.
