Family-Style Dinner to Benefit School

 
DERBY- A Macaroni and Meatball Family Supper to Benefit St. Mary-St. Michael School will be held at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10 at St. Michael Church Hall, 75 Derby Ave.

The public is welcome to join Marc Garofalo and St. Michael's Kitchen Krew for family style dinner featuring macaroni, meatballs, salad, soda, coffee  and dessert.

Tickets are $10 per person.

Anyone interested in donating a prize for the raffle or baking for the dessert trays can either drop off at the rectory or bring it by 2 p.m. on the day of the dinner.

Hey Valley: Get Your Ducks in a Row!

SHELTON - Have a swimmingly good time watching your duck and help support Spooner House from now until June 23. 

The Housy River Duck Race takes place June 24 at 2 p.m. starting at the Derby/Shelton Bridge on the Housatonic River. 

 

The enter-to-win tickets are $5 per duck of which $2 will support Area Congregations Together Spooner House. You may purchase your duck tickets at Spooner House, 30 Todd Road weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Any tickets you purchase will have a corresponding number for your duck during the race. 

 

Last year 150 ducks were sold by Spooner House, which resulted in $300 being raised to help financially with the ACT hunger and homeless initiatives in the Valley.

Each duck ticket will give you an opportunity to win a prize for the first 65 ducks to cross the finish line. The grand prize is $1,000 cash; 2nd place is a 55" LED HDTV, 3rd place is $500; 4th place is an Apple iPad mini; and the 5th place winner receives $250. 

 

The prizes and contest are sponsored by the St. Mary-St. Michael School Development Committee in Derby. The school group has other organizations participating in the ticket selling as well, which means there will be more ducks.

 

 “It is great to be able to support St. Mary-St. Michael School through this partnership as they have been a wonderful supporter of Spooner House throughout the years,” said Susan Agamy, Executive Director at Spooner House.

School Nurse Gets Helping Hand

DERBY - Griffin Hospital’s Community Outreach and Valley Parish Nurse Program helped Derby students get ready for a healthy new school year recently.

 

The program donated a pulse oximeter and a forehead thermometer to St. Michael-St. Mary School to help the school nurse better care for students. The school’s thermometer was out-of-date and the nurse did not have a pulse oximeter.

 

“We heard the school needed better equipment from one of the members of the new parish nurse program forming at St. Mary the Immaculate Church,” said Daun Barrett, director of Griffin Hospital’s Community Outreach and Valley Parish Nurse Program. “Griffin and the Valley Parish Nurses have a mission to improve the health of our community, so we were more than happy to lend a hand.”

 

Griffin Hospital’s Community Outreach and Valley Parish Nurse Program serves as the hub of Griffin Hospital’s outreach activities, accounting for more than 40,000 community contacts each year. These contacts include fitting bike helmets, training adults and children in CPR, and providing health education and information at senior centers, shopping centers, neighborhoods, companies, and community events and fairs.

 

The program also conducts more than 7,500 health screenings each year to help individuals identify problems when they are most treatable, resulting in approximately 11,000 referrals for follow-up care.

Bingo Fundraiser at Foxwoods

DERBY -St. Mary-St. Michael School is hosting a bingo/casino bus trip to Foxwoods Casino on Saturday, June 18.

The bus will depart the school, 14 Seymour Ave., Derby at 7:30 a.m. and return around 6:30 p.m. The trip will provide attendees plenty of time to play bingo or enjoy other games and attractions at the casino.

The cost is $30 per person and includes a free $15 KENO play coupon and a free $10 food coupon. There will be bingo on the bus.

Proceeds will support the St. Mary-St. Michael Home School Association, which supports the needs of the school.

St. Mary - St. Michael School Schedules Open Houses

DERBY - St. Mary - St. Michael School, 14 Seymour Avenue in Derby, will hold several Open Houses during Catholic Schools Month.  Parents are invited to visit the school any Tuesday during January.  Open House will be held each Tuesday from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM.  In addition, an Open House will beheld on Sunday, January 10, 2016 from 12:30 – 2:30 PM.

 

To be eligible for Kindergarten, children must be 5 years old by December 31, 2016.  The school also offers a flexible Pre-K Program for 3 and 4 year old children, which may be full time or part time.  St. Mary- St. Michael’s Pre-K gives your child the freedom to explore the world around them and the structure to develop social skills, solve problems and become an active learner who is preparing for kindergarten.

Valley Students Take Part in Living Nativity/Christmas Concert

DERBY = Students at St. Mary-St. Michael School took part in the annual Living Nativity and Christmas Concert Dec. 16.

Parents and relatives experienced the re-enactment of the story of Christ's birth, along with traditional Christmas music selections.

St. Mary – St. Michael School’s Festival of Trees Christmas Bazaar Nov. 22 in Derby

DERBY >> St. Mary – St. Michael School’s Festival of Trees Christmas Bazaar will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, November 22 at 14 Seymour Ave.

Join us for Breakfast with Santa, who will also be available for photos. The event will includes a Christmas tree and wreath raffles, Chinese Auction, and new this year, there will be 7.5 FT and 9 FT trees for sale. Many unique craft vendors featured. This school fundraiser is a great way to make memories and get in the holiday spirit.

St. Mary-St. Michael School to host Wine Tasting Fundraiser Nov. 9 in Derby

DERBY >> St. Mary-St. Michael School will host a Wine Tasting Fundraiser from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9 at 500 Degrees on Main Street, 181 Main St., Derby. Staff at school in Derby trained for health emergencies

Through a grant from the Valley Community Foundation, St. Mary- St. Michael School in Derby purchased an AED or Automatic External Defibrillator. 

Carol Carloni, school nurse, and Cathi Kellett, Valley Parish Nurse Program, provided CPR and AED certification training to the staff.  

As part of educating people on the importance of a healthy lifestyle, the Griffin Hospital Community Outreach Mobile Unit conducted cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood glucose screenings on staff members before the start of the new school year. / Contributed photo

DERBY - St. Mary-St. Michael School seventh grader Makayla Naranjo recently won a poster contest that promotes Family Day on Sept. 23 as a day for families to eat dinner together.

Makayla was presented with an iPod and a framed poster by Maria Maynard, Deputy Superintendent of Schools of the Archdiocese of Hartford and the Rev. Janusz Kukulka, Pastor, St. Mary Church.
A total of 54 elementary schools in the Archdiocese participated in this contest.
