Oxford Woman to Receive Caring Heart Award

WOODBRIDGE - The Women’s Heart Wellness Committee will host its 13^th Annual Women's Heart Wellness & Caring Heart Award Ceremony on Thurs., April 26 from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Birchwoods at Oak Lane Country Club, 1027 Racebrook Road, Woodbridge.

 

The theme of the dinner will be “Who’s That Woman in the Mirror?” featuring a panel of health experts discussing women’s health and answering questions related to healthy aging. There will also be a health fair with information on overall wellness and more. WTNH Health Reporter Jocelyn Maminta will be the MC for the evening.

 

The event will also honor Barbara Casagrande, of Oxford, with the Caring Heart Award. The Women’s Heart Wellness Committee will also present its Caring Heart Award to an individual from the Lower Naugatuck Valley who made significant contributions to the heart wellness of an individual or the community at large by his or her actions and/or volunteerism.

DERBY - The Women’s Heart Wellness Committee will host its 12^th Annual Women's Heart Wellness & Caring Heart Award Brunch on Saturday, March 25 from 8:30 a.m.-noon at the Griffin Hospital Dining Room, 130 Division Street, Derby.

 

The theme of the event is “What’s Your Shelf Life,” focusing on how healthy eating habits can help prevent heart disease. The event will feature a survivor speaker, a cooking demonstration and tips on how to shop for healthier food.

 

The Women’s Heart Wellness Committee will also present its Caring Heart Awards to an individual and a group, organization or business from the Lower Naugatuck Valley who have made significant contributions to the heart wellness of an individual or the community at large by their actions and/or volunteerism.

Seymour's 'marathon man' inspires

Despite a heart condition, Seymour resident Walter Schuttler had a plan and he ran with it. 

After completing marathons in 20 states, Schuttler started thinking about running a marathon in every state. 
And as of last June in Anchorage, Alaska, he accomplished his mission. 

The certificate below says it all: 

I was pleased to meet Schuttler last week at Bungay School in  Seymour, where he works as a custodian, to interview him for a story about his accomplishments. It was published Monday.

 

Schuttler, 61, certainly inspired me and said he hopes to inspire others who may be dealing with medical issues to get out and do their best.

Schuttler had a goal and he stuck to it, and he deserves plaudits for his determination.

Hospital to host heart fair

DERBY -  Griffin Hospital will host a free Heart Health Fair from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital, 350 Seymour Ave., to help individuals find out if they and/or their loved ones are heart healthy.

The fair will feature presentations by medical experts on pacemakers and AICDs, the long-term cardiac effects of radiation and chemotherapy, acupuncture, and heart health.

There will also be information and demonstrations on services and programs offered at Griffin Hospital. They include: blood pressure screening; cardiac risk screening; stroke assessments; sleep apnea screening; body composition; nutrition; stress reduction through guided imagery; massage; exercise demonstrations; congestive heart failure.
Also, Echocardiogram (ECHO) heart test demonstration; Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP); the psychosocial aspects of cardiac disease; CPR certification; healthy recipes and refreshments; Wii fit; fall prevention; Tai Chi; survivorship program; relaxation; energy conservation; and pet therapy.
