ANSONIA >> The city has secured a $1.07 million federal grant that will be used to build a road linking the Birmingham Parkway with a new 60,000-square-foot headquarters and manufacturing facility the Farrel Corp. is building, opening up 44 acres for the creation of a business park.

The U.S. Economic Development Administration’s decision to award the grant was announced Wednesday by U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, U.S. Rep. Rosa L. DeLauro, D-3, and Ansonia Mayor David Cassetti at a press conference held near the construction site. DeLauro said the project will create 225 construction jobs and save 100 jobs at Farrel.

“I think this a great example of the government and the private sector working together,” she said.

Blumenthal, D-Conn., said the road, which city officials have said will cost about $2 million to build, “is a symbolic path to economic prosperity.”

Bond Commission OKs $1.75 million for Farrell Corp. in Ansonia

ANSONIA >> One of the city’s longest-standing businesses, Farrel Corp., got a big boost from the state this week to help expand its headquarters here.

According to a press release from state Rep. Linda Gentile, D-Ansonia/Derby and state Sen. Joe Crisco Jr., D-Woodbridge, the state Bond Commission approved a $1.75 million loan to the Farrel Pomini Co., which will be forgiven if the company makes good on its promise to retain and create jobs.

The company will retain 79 jobs, and plans to create five new ones when the expansion to the Fountain Lake Commerce Park is complete later this year.

“I want to thank the governor for his continued commitment to manufacturing in the Naugatuck Valley,” Gentile said. “He understands the importance of this once, very vibrant industry and appreciates not only the economic impact of maintaining this company in our community, but also the historical significance of keeping this industry where its’ origin is.

Hamden developer faces $8K per day fine for blight in Ansonia

ANSONIA >> The city has slapped the Hamden developer who bought some former blighted Farrel Corp. property downtown in 2013 with an $8,000 per day lien for failing to remediate the building, despite several deadline extensions.
At a recent appeals hearing, the city’s hearing officer, Attorney Keith Murray denied “a further extension of time” for Developer Moustapha Diakhate to fix the remaining broken windows on the building at 501 E. Main St. Murray said at the hearing last week, there were still about 80 broken windows plaguing the building, which Diakhate agreed to board up, along with a host of other fixes he and the city previously agreed upon.

Ansonia names future road after Farrel Corp.

ANSONIA >> The city has further pledged its commitment to keeping the historic Farrel Corp. here by naming a soon-to-be-built road that will lead to its new location in the Fountain Lake Commerce Park after the 166-year old company.
The Board of Aldermen unanimously voted at its meeting Tuesday to name the new road Farrel Boulevard.
Planning and Zoning Commission Chairman Joseph Jaumann sent the aldermen a letter last month, requesting the access road be named so that future tenants, including Farrel, can have items delivered there during the construction phase.
