Volunteers Needed for Earth Day Clean-up

ANSONIA - Mayor Dave Cassetti is seeking volunteers to assist in his third annual Earth Day Cleanup of litter on select streets in the City. 

The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon April 27. The meeting place is 9 a.m. at the Ansonia Armory, 5 State St. Reflective vests, pickers, and trash bags will be provided. Over the past two Earth Day events, more than 1,000 lbs of paper/cans/bottles have been collected. All volunteers participating will be treated to a post-cleanup pizza party too!

Flea Market Flip Contest Underway

ANSONIA -  If you have an eye for style and a knack for reinvention, we invite you to put your talents to the test and sign up for My Sister’s Place (MSP) Flea Market Flip!

 

MSP's Flea Market Flip is a fun, creative twist on recycling or upcycling similar to the HGTV show with the same name, Flea Market Flip. Proceeds from the sale of each flip item will benefit BHcare’s The Umbrella Center for Domestic Violence Services.

 

Individual participants or teams of two must purchase their flip item(s) at MSP for $50 or less by September 30. Registration forms are available at the store and must be completed at the time of purchase. No more than $50 may be spent on repurposing/upcycling the item(s).

 

Receipts must be shown when submitting the repurposed item.

 

Items will be displayed and sold on October 14 at the Ansonia Armory located at 25 N. Cliff Street in Ansonia.

 

The day will feature special guest Mark DeVito, Master Craftsman from HGTV’s Flea Market Flip along with DIY demos including furniture destressing, furniture white washing, knitting and crocheting. Attendees will also have the opportunity to cast a vote for their favorite flip. The flip with the most votes wins!

Valley Mayor Steps Back into the Ring

 

ANSONIA- Mayor David Cassetti, in preparation for the kick-off of his 3rd annual Pinky Silverberg youth boxing program, recently warmed up by jumping rope. Check out the mayor's moves by clicking on the link below:

The "Young Gloves" program begins Sept. 6, and will run from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Ansonia Armory, 5 State St.

The program is open Valley boys and girls ages 6-13. The cost is $40 per student and all safety equipment, including new mouth guards, boxing gloves and protective head gear is provided.

Students are required to show up to class in shorts, t-shirt and sneakers. The program will culminate Nov. 3 with an official Connecticut Amateur Boxing event Nov. 3, with trophies awarded.

Cassetti began the popular club as a way to help build kids’ confidence. Last year’s club was a total knockout, drawing more than 90 kids to the ring.

 
During the program, kids will learn the fundamentals and train like a boxer, Cassetti said, while having fun and getting fit in a supervised environment. Kids will be grouped by age, and will participate in workouts that include sparring, speed bag, heavy bag, jump rope and various forms of aerobic exercise.  Cassetti said the club not only gets kids away from video games and off their phones, it teaches them confidence, coordination and skill, while developing discipline and work ethics.

Ansonia American Legion Brings Awareness to Veterans Suicide

 

ANSONIA - In its continuous support for the military and its veterans, The Ansonia Gordon-Visselli American Legion Post 50 is addressing veteran suicides with a unique awareness activity.

 

Nationally, the well-recognized static of 22 veterans per day committing suicide is a grim reality that need not be. Across the country, a popular “’22 push-up” movement, where people volunteer to do 22 push-ups for 22 days while challenging others to do the same, has increased the awareness of this sad truth while giving hope to those veterans that are troubled in so many ways, for so many reasons.

 

Post 50, under the command of U.S. Army veteran, Jack Granatie, looked for a more public way to get the message of veteran support out to the community at large. A display was designed that consists of 22 individual signs depicting the silhouettes of kneeling soldiers. Accompanying them is a larger sign declaring “22 Veterans Commit Suicide EVERY DAY. The display is being relocated to a new spot every day for at least 22 consecutive days so that they can receive maximum exposure throughout town, utilizing public places, businesses and residential front yards as backdrops. It made its debut on November 11 at the Ansonia Veterans Day Ceremony at Veterans Park next to City Hall. When the 22 days or more has run its course, the entire display will be offered to other American Legion Posts to set up in their towns.

Mayor Cassetti’s “Young Gloves” Boxing Tournament a Knockout Success!

ANSONIA- On Friday, November 11, Mayor Cassetti led the Pinky Silverberg Boxing Show to an extremely successful evening of fundraising, demonstration of skills, and matches from renowned amateur boxers from the New England Area.

Roughly 550 people attended the event with 60 girls and boys participating in the tournament, and the event raised $6,000.

“I was thrilled with the success of this event,” said Mayor Cassetti.  “It was wonderful to see the Armory packed to capacity with residents of all ages.”

Cassetti plans for another boxing tournament featuring the Young Gloves to be held once again in November of next year.

The Pinky Silverberg Boxing Show first featured the Valley’s Young Gloves of children between 6 and 13 competing and showcasing their talents. Later in the night, the USA Boxing Amateur Fighters took the spotlight, as well as an official Connecticut Amateur Boxing Card.

The program’s title was to the Ansonia native Silverberg, who held both a flyweight boxing title in 1927 and is a member of the Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame. Cassetti, a Middleweight Champion himself, ran the program with other directors to help children gain self-confidence, while having fun with the sport simultaneously.

Boxing had a positive and profound effect on Mayor Cassetti when he was a child, so he hopes to share the specialty of the sport with other children as well. The Young Gloves’ program strives to teach technique, discipline, and self-confidence in the boxers, and to engage more in physical activities and a healthier lifestyle. There were 22 bouts, or fights, during the event, which were split up into two 1 minute rounds.

Ansonia Mayor Cassetti's Youth Boxing Club a Real Knockout

ANSONIA - Mayor David Cassetti kicked off the first session of his youth boxing club, dubbed the Pinky Silverberg Youth Boxing Program, on Thursday, Sept. 1. The program, held at the Ansonia Armory drew about 30 boys and girls from around the Valley. Volunteer coaches, boxers and trainers showed the kids the ropes, teaching them how to spar, hit the heavy bag, tackle the speed bag and more. The club runs through early November. Valley Veterans Receive Wartime Medals

ANSONIA - A ceremony hosted by state Sen. Joseph Crisco, D-Woodbridge, was recently held to honor the service of 40 military veterans who served in various conflicts.

The ceremony, held June 7 at the Ansonia Armory, featured Crisco and Sean Connolly, the state’s Commissioner of Veterans Affairs, presenting the Connecticut Wartime Service Medals to the men and women of the military. Also on hand were Ansonia Mayor David Cassetti and state Rep. Linda Gentile, D-Ansonia/Derby.

“I am from a family that lost a parent during the Second World War,” Crisco said. “We appreciate the sacrifices that families make. You never forget. It is a debt that we can never repay. We thank you so much for what you’ve all done for our country and ourselves.”

The event also featured a Color Guard unit from the Connecticut National Guard, who presented the U.S. and state flags. Korean War veteran Robert Marganski led the gathering in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Members of the Ansonia High School chorus sang the national anthem.

 “We salute all our veterans, of every era, those who donned the uniform so we could live free as a nation,” Connolly said. “We appreciate all of your service, without which we wouldn’t enjoy the freedoms we do today.”
