Hikes, Creepy Crawlies, Fall Adventures On Tap at Nature Center

ANSONIA - The Ansonia Nature Center has listed the following events for October:

 

NATURE EXPLORERS – Wednesdays, Oct. 4, 11, 10 am

Join Wendy for our preschool/toddler program. This 4-week session, which began in September, is for children ages 2–5 years old with an adult. These outdoor classes will be fun exploring and learning through play. We will learn about nature and science through activities such as hiking, exploring, singing, games, reading, and making crafts. Every class is outside!!!! TUITION: $20 to join us for these 2 weeks, space permitting  (cash or check payable to Ansonia Nature Center). Please call to register.

 

BITTERSWEET WREATHS – Sat. Oct. 7, 2 pm

Bring your own clippers and gardening gloves for this workshop led by Ranger Dawn. When you collect these beautiful orange-berried vines, you’re actually helping the park by removing this invasive plant species. FEE: $5. Please call to register.

 

ROPE MAKING: The Ancient Way – Sat. Oct. 14, 1 pm

A beginner’s chance to learn a skill practiced long ago.  Learn which native plants have been used to make rope.  Children must be accompanied by an adult who will assist in creating a sample to take home. FEE: $6 per person. Please call to register.

 

AUTUMN FESTIVAL – Sat. Oct. 21, 11 am–4 pm

Celebrate this wonderful season with the staff and the Friends of the Ansonia Nature Center (FANCI)! Take a ride through our community gardens and fields in our horse-drawn story wagon, where you’ll hear some spooky Halloween tales! Learn about bats, spiders, and owls! Have some fresh apple cider and baked goods. Visit the Nature Shop to buy some creepy and crawly nature-related items. Enjoy nature-related exhibitors and vendors. You can try your hand at pumpkin painting, get your face painted, and make some original crafts. All proceeds will benefit the Nature Center. RAIN or SHINE. No park admission fee. CREEPY CRAWLIES – Sat. Oct. 28, 12 pm

Hold a real life tarantula, hear a cockroach hiss, and learn all about insects. Arthropods are fascinating creatures! Join us for this special Creature Feature family program. FREE. Please call to register.

 

SUNDAY GUIDED HIKE: Fall Foliage – Sun. Oct. 29, 1 pm

Join the Nature Center naturalist for a stroll through our woodlands, old fields, and wetlands. Enjoy the beauty and the crisp fall air while learning about New England’s flora and fauna.

Preschool program at Ansonia Nature Center to focus on fall

ANSONIA - Fall's colorful leafy critters are the topic of a preschool program next month at the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center, 10 Deerfield Road.

A Nature's Child program for three-to-five year olds accompanied by an adult will be held at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 4.

Join Ranger Wendy to find out how to create whimsical fall figures out of collected fallen leaves.
Activities may also include a short story or a walk to discover why leaves change color in the fall.

Tuition is $6 per family; $4 for Ansonia residents and  family-level members of Friends of the Ansonia Nature Center, Inc.

Shelton farm slates UNICEF festival for kids

27th annual event to be held this weekend

SHELTON - Families dressed in costume are invited to Jones Family Farms’ annual UNICEF Family Festival from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at their Pumpkinseed Hill farm, 120 Beardsley Road.

Games and crafts for kids will help raise money for UNICEF.

Activities (Proceeds directly to UNICEF) include:
Temporary Tattoos
Bean Bag Toss
Fortune Telling
Gourd Creature Making
Button Making

This year marks the 27th anniversary of the Jones' family selling pumpkins at their Pumpkinseed Hill farm at 120 Beardsley Road. Over the years, they have been able to donate more than $100,000 to UNICEF thanks to this yearly festival.

Guests to the pumpkin fields will join farmers in celebrating one of our favorite pumpkin themes: The World of OZ! You may even see some of your favorite characters working in the pumpkin patch that weekend!

Entertainment will take place on the Munchkin-land stage and includes a musical performance from Shelton’s Center Stage Theater Teen Cabaret at 2 p.m. Saturday. Also, pig and chicken feeding demonstrations and story-times will be held throughout both days.

As usual, guests will be able to choose from more than 50 varieties of pumpkins, squash and gourds grown on the Jones farm.
The hayrides will be running and weather permitting the corn maze will be open too.

The ever-popular All-You-Can-Carry special is also in place. Guests will pay only $33 for all the pumpkins they can carry across the finish line. This year, the Jones Farmers have included white pumpkins, specialty pumpkins and even their eye-catching GIANT pumpkins in the deal. It’s always fun to stand by the line and cheer on the strong men and women at the pumpkin patch.

Jones Family Farms is open daily through Halloween, 10 a.m.- 5:30 p.m.; 4 p.m. close on Halloween.

Jones Winery is open 11 a.m. -5 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Fall foliage found in Derby

After an interview in Derby today I took a ride over to Osbornedale State Park to see if I could snap a photo or two of autumn colors.

I found some beautiful colors and lazy person that I am I actually took these without getting out of the car. Lazy and in a rush, I suppose.
