Rep. Klarides-Ditria Renews Call to Pass School Safety Bill

HARTFORD – State Rep. Nicole Klarides-Ditria submitted testimony last week in support of legislation that seeks to enhance classroom safety and school climate.

Under the bill, H.B. 7110, boards of education would be required to revise their safe school climate plans to include provisions relating to disruptive or injurious incidents that occur in classrooms, to develop and implement a state-wide school climate survey, and to require the Department of Education to provide assistance to school districts relating to school climate.

Rep. Klarides-Ditria said, “It is crucial that we highly prioritize the safety of students and teachers. Giving teachers the ability to remove dangerous students for a short time with the requirement that they follow designated protocols will protect the rights and safety of the child in question, the teacher, and fellow students.

A similar bill was passed by the House and Senate last session but was vetoed by Governor Dan Malloy. For more information about the people or to track legislation visit, cga.ct.gov.

Seymour Loses Devoted Public Servant

SEYMOUR – The community lost one of its most dedicated public servants, Bruce Baker, who passed away Nov. 15.

Baker, 75, leaves behind his wife, Karen, of 54 years, and his sons Erik and Greg and several grandchildren.

Baker dedicated much of his life to public service, leaving behind an “extraordinary legacy of service to the Town of Seymour,” according to his obituary.

Baker served in numerous leadership roles, including Seymour’s Deputy First Selectman and Chairman of the Board of Education, as well as a member of the Board of Ethics, Chatfield School Building Committee, High School Building Committee, Seymour Strategic Planning Committee and the Board of Assessment Appeals.

In addition, Baker devoted his time to youth sports and recreation, serving as the Cub Master of Pack 65, Little League baseball and basketball coach, President of Seymour Pop Warner, President of the Seymour Kickoff Club, President of the Seymour Fathers’ Club and President of the Hoopsters’ Club.

A devoted church man, Baker was an active, 46-year member of Seymour Congregational Church serving numerous terms as Moderator, Deacon and in multiple finance roles.

His love of Boston sports was well-known, and throughout his retirement, Baker was an avid golfer.

Friend and fellow Board of Education member Fred Stanek said Baker’s passing is a huge loss.  

"As members of the Seymour Board of Education for many years together, Bruce and I often disagreed on important educational issues,” said Stanek. “However, Bruce understood that the best educational decisions for the school district were made through the deliberative process by discussing differing points of view. I will remember that Bruce had the best interests of the students at heart and that he and I were always able to leave a meeting after a heated civil debate shaking hands ready to continue our discussions at the next meeting. Bruce will be remembered as a great public servant.”

Former First Selectman Robert Koskelowski was proud to call Baker a friend.

“Bruce served on many boards, but when he served with me on the Board of Selectmen, it was an honor and that’s when we all new Bruce was serving to help make Seymour a great town,” Koskelowski said. “He helped us improve our school system. He was just a great guy who we will all miss. He worked hard for the betterment of the community.”

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Dec. 22 at the Seymour Congregational Church, 45 Broad St. The family will welcome friends at a celebration of life reception in the fellowship hall at 3p.m. Interment will be private.

WHAT:      In an effort to assist in advocating for the staff, faculty, parents, and students of Ansonia Public Schools, the Friends of Ansonia Education would like to formally invite you to a public tour of Mead School and Ansonia Middle School on Friday, November 2, 2018. The best way to grasp the challenges the schools are facing right now is to witness these conditions firsthand. Attendees will have the opportunity to speak directly with administrators and teachers about the current circumstances and discuss solutions.

·      Ansonia residents with children eligible for Kindergarten (5 years old by January 1^st) are invited to register your child in the Ansonia Public Schools

Pre-K office located in the portables behind the Ansonia Middle School on Day Street.

·      Ansonia families with children ages 2.9-5 years old can register early for Fall of 2018 for one of our pre-kindergarten program in our Ansonia School Readiness Office (also located in the portables on Day St.)

·      Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten families are welcome to visit our Family Fun Fair in the middle school gym to participate in engaging activities to reinforce learning at home. Lots of free items will be given to those who attend!

Accelerated CNA Course Begins in October

DERBY - The Griffin Hospital School of Allied Health Careers, at 300 Seymour Avenue, Suite 206, in Derby, is offering a day session of its Accelerated Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program starting Oct. 30 to help individuals start a fulfilling career in healthcare.

 

The CNA course offers students an affordable and condensed 5-week schedule with classes Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m.-1 p. m.

 

Course content includes infection control, legal and ethical responsibilities, communications, body mechanics, moving and positioning residents, personal care skills, nutrition, measuring vital signs, and restorative care. The CNA course tuition fee includes the course book, CPR training, and malpractice insurance coverage for the clinical rotation.

 

The CNA clinical experience will be at Griffin Hospital and a long-term care facility from 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. for 40 hours. After successfully completing the course and clinical experience, students will be qualified to take the State exam for certification as a Nursing Assistant in Connecticut.

Griffin Hospital's School of Allied Health Careers was one of the first hospital-based schools of its kind to be authorized by the Connecticut Department of Higher Education and offers training, education, and certification for Phlebotomy, Nursing Assistant, and Patient Care Technician healthcare careers. Classes are taught by certified instructors in the Griffin Hospital Medical Building, located at 300 Seymour Avenue in Derby.
