Shop & Sip Event to Benefit Shelton's Adam's House

Newly opened Southern Tide & Splash of Pink in Westport will host “Shopping and Shampagne,” an April 25th fundraiser to benefit Adam’s House, a grief and education loss center providing no-cost programs to grieving children and families in Connecticut. 

 

Guests can enjoy a glass of champagne while shopping for their new spring wardrobe and accessories at Westport’s newest shop located at 275 Post Road East in Westport, CT.  Ten percent of sales at the fundraiser from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. will benefit Adam’s House. The event is open to the public. 

 

Adam’s House Board Member Donna Nayden and Southern Tide Manager Maria Terrell are hosting the event.

 

“Adam’s House is a place where grieving families can turn in their time of need,” said Nayden. “Its programs provide families with hope, comfort, support and age-appropriate coping skills. Thanks to the generosity of local vendors such as Southern Tide and Splash of Pink, Adam’s House is able to offer their programs at no-cost to families. Please join us for a fun evening of shopping, sipping “shampagne” and supporting this wonderful community organization.”

Cyclists for CT Challenge in Fairfield offer inspiration, hope

Event held under picture-perfect skies Saturday

A sea of cyclists at opening ceremonies Saturday morning at Fairfield County Hunt Club in Westport. These dedicated men and women, who pedaled anywhere from 10 to 180 miles to raise funds for cancer survivors, are my heroes. The 180-mile ride was held over two days.

WESTPORT - Yes, I know this isn't a View from the Valley as the name of this blog would suggest..but since I live in the Valley I thought I'd take some liberties today.

And of course there are way too many Valley residents living with cancer and in the midst of undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, and other forms of treatment to fight the disease. 

I wrote a story about CT Challenge earlier this month. 

My husband Ralph and I volunteered Saturday at this event; he is working on a YouTube slideshow using our photos. I'll embed that in a future blog post, I guess! He's better at some of this technology than I.

We got involved as volunteers through my participation in a weekly exercise class for breast cancer survivors at the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital in Derby. The class is led by cancer certified exercise trainer extraordinaire Dan Root, who works at CT Challenge.

Since the class is free for those of us in Griffin Hospital's survivorship program, volunteering at this wonderful event is one small way for me to give back. And it was truly a great day.

Former major league baseball player and manager Bobby Valentine, athletic director at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, speaks to fellow cyclists at the opening ceremonies. He was introduced by CT Challenge co-founder and President Jeff Keith of Fairfield, who survived cancer when he was 12. 

Seymour Historical Society to host Holocaust survivor

Westport resident to speak May 19 

SEYMOUR - The Holocaust was time of unspeakable atrocities, but it also produced inspiring tales of perseverance and bravery.

A survivor of the Nazi concentration camps will tell her incredible story in a special program at the Seymour Historical Society at 2 p.m. May 19.

Anita Schorr will describe how, when she was a young girl, she and her Czech family were arrested by the Nazis, relocated to a Jewish ghetto and then endured hard labor in four concentration camps, including the notorious Auschwitz. 

She’ll also describe how the experience shaped her future.  Liberated before her 15th birthday by British soldiers, Ms. Schorr, who lives in Westport, spent six months in a military hospital, settled in Israel, started a family there, and moved to the United States in 1959.

The Seymour Historical Society, 59 West St., is located near Trinity Episcopal Church. 

Parking is available in the lot behind the Valley Marine Corps League building, 56 West St..

This event is free for Seymour Historical Society members and $3 per person ($5 per couple) for non-members.

Doors open at 1 p.m. for those who wish to view the museum’s exhibits.

FOX CT to rebroadcast feature on Humphreys House

   ANSONIA — The Gen. David Humphreys House, home of the Derby Historical Society, will be featured on “Northeast Living” again this week on FOX CT.
    The show will air at 9 a.m. Saturday. A segment about the historic house at 37 Elm St. was shown last Saturday and it is being rebroadcast.
    Linda Milardo, administrative assistant at the historical society, said Westport resident Mar Jennings, host of the show, visited the house recently and taped a segment. She urged people to visit his Website, www.marjennings.com.

General David Humphreys House to be featured on TV show Saturday

ANSONIA — The Gen. David Humphreys House, home of the Derby Historical Society, will be featured on “Northeast Living” this week on FOX CT.
Linda Milardo, administrative assistant at the historical society, said Westport resident Mar Jennings, host of the show, visited the house recently and taped a segment. She urged people to visit his Website, www.marjennings.com.
The show will air at 9 a.m. Saturday.
The house, built in 1698, is at 37 Elm St., in the city’s historic district. Humphreys was born in 1752.
