Sens. Crisco and Kane testify in favor of fire safety legislation

Sen. Joseph Crisco, D-Woodbridge, and Sen. Rob Kane, R-Watertown, on Feb. 3 testified in favor of legislation which would require landlords to notify tenants whether there is an operative sprinkler system in their housing units.

The idea for the proposal originated from former Woodbridge resident Jeffrey Block, whose daughter, Eva, was a student at Marist College when she tragically died in an off-campus house fire in 2012.

Left to right: Sen. Joseph Crisco, D-Woodbridge, Sen. Rob Kane, R-Watertown,
and former Woodbridge resident Jeffrey Block on Feb. 3 testified in favor
of legislation which would require landlords to notify tenants whether there
is an operative sprinkler system in their housing units.
“Too often we see news reports of fires in dwellings which result in the loss of life,” Crisco said. “As legislators, we must take every step we can to prevent such tragedies. Requiring that landlords notify their tenants about whether there is an operative sprinkler system in their unit is one such step.”

“In any dwelling, we can all agree that fire prevention safety and fire prevention safety methods are paramount,” Kane said. “This bill would require landlords to do something which many of us would consider to be a common sense act. Requiring this simple notification could mean the difference between life and death.”

Crisco and Kane, who are co-sponsoring the legislation, thanked Block for bringing the issue to their attention. Block currently lives in Watertown.

The bill now awaits legislative action by the General Assembly’s Housing Committee.

Local lawmakers congratulate Seymour student

HARTFORD - State Senators Kevin Kelly, R-Stratford, and Rob Kane, R-Watertown, recognize and congratulate Rachel E. Mayers, a student from Seymour, on receiving a Connecticut Higher Education Trust (CHET) Advance Scholarship.

Mayers was awarded a $2,500 grant for her college education during an award ceremony Wednesday at the State Capitol.

“Paying for school is a challenge faced by many young people who dream about pursuing a college education,” said Kelly.
“I hope that this scholarship will help make college more affordable for our local Seymour student, so that she may achieve her goal of a college degree.”

“We commend Rachel on being awarded this scholarship and wish her and all Seymour high school seniors the very best in the future,” Kane said.
“The cost of higher education is not getting any cheaper, and these funds will allow Rachel and the other scholarship winners to spend less time worrying about how to pay for college and more time focused on getting into college and staying in college.”

Mayers was one of 200 high school seniors selected to receive a CHET Advance Scholarship. Winners were randomly selected from a pool of 3,635 applicants that hail from 85 public high schools, 10 parochial high schools and three independent high schools in Connecticut. Two of the winners are home-schooled students.
Almost half of the towns in Connecticut have at least one winner, and all eight counties are represented among the winners.

CHET Advance Scholarship is administered under the banner of the Connecticut Higher Education Trust, Connecticut’s 529 college savings plan. No state funds will be used for awards issued under CHET Advance Scholarship.
Instead, TIAA-CREF Tuition Financing, Inc. and The Hartford, plan managers for CHET Direct-Sold and CHET Advisor-Sold, respectively, contribute annually into a scholarship account to finance the program.

For information on the CHET Advance Scholarship, visit the Office of the State Treasurer webpage: http://www.state.ct.us/ott/aboutchet.htm

Kane proposes bill to create registry for gun crime felons

State Sen. Rob Kane
Sen. Rob Kane, R-Watertown, Tuesday proposed a measure in the state Senate which would make public the names and addresses of those who are found guilty of gun crimes in Connecticut.
Under current law, only public safety officials have access to this information.

“The state’s sex offender registry is available for all to see,” Kane said. “It’s one of the most visited and useful state websites. People want to know who their neighbors are.

"The sex offender registry has bolstered public safety and has given parents and families key information to make educated decisions.”

The state’s sex offender registry can be accessed by visiting
www.communitynotification.com.

“By the same token, the public should be able to know where violent felons who have committed crimes with guns live,” Kane said.
“A gun felon registry would accomplish that goal. Right now, the public is in the dark. Why are we protecting these felons? People should be able to find out if someone who has committed an offense with a deadly weapon is living in their neighborhood. This is about transparency.”

The proposal was defeated by the state Senate on a party line vote.

Kane's 10-town district includes Seymour and Oxford.
