Contributed photo of rescued kitten courtesy of Seymour F.D.
SEYMOUR - The Seymour Fire Department made a picture "purrrrfect" rescue this week.

On Monday night, Aug. 13, at approximately 11 p.m. the Seymour Fire Department was dispatched to Willow Street for an animal rescue. Upon arrival, crews found a tiny kitten stuck in the engine compartment of a parked vehicle.

The kitten was removed, uninjured, in about 10 minutes by fire department personnel with the expertise of Assistant Chief Edwards, who was able to remove the vehicle's air filter box.  The cat, although scared, appeared to be in good health, according to Assistant Fire Marshal Tim Willis.

Assistant Chief Edwards then took the kitten to VCA animal shelter in for a full checkup and a bath. Willis said the department is unsure of the kitten's owner.

In all about 15 firefighters responded to the incident.

State Rep. Klarides-Ditria Highlights New CT Laws

Dear Neighbors,

As of yesterday, October 1st, 140 new laws went into effect. The new laws cover a wide range of topics and may have an impact on your day-to-day life or business.

Below is a highlight of some of the new laws.

I am proud to have championed this legislation that will require a person who wants to operate or maintain an animal shelter in Connecticut to register with the Department of Agriculture (DoAg) commissioner and comply with DoAg's regulations on sanitation, disease, humane treatment of cats and dogs, and public safety protection. In addition, this law authorizes the commissioner, or his agent, to inspect an animal shelter at any time.

We are taking steps to prevent and treat opioid abuse. Under this bill, it allows patients to ask that opioids not be prescribed to them and reduces the amount of opioid drugs a minor may be prescribed. It also requires practitioners, when prescribing opioids, to discuss with all patients, rather than only minors, the risks associated with opioid drug use. Click here to read more.

This act requires the Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) commissioner to establish and operate a hotline that provides individualized information and guidance to entrepreneurs and small business owners on how to start and develop a business, identify networking resources, and access technical and financial assistance from the state and quasi-public agencies.

All children under the age of 2 will be required to travel in a rear-facing car seat. This legislation also requires children to ride in booster seats until the age of 8.

In case you missed it, last week Governor Dan Malloy vetoed the bipartisan budget that passed both the House and the Senate last month. The governor’s executive order, which eliminates educational funding to 85 communities, will now move forward.

We will have a chance to override the governor’s decision during a veto session tomorrow and restore the bipartisan budget. I am urging my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to override the governor’s veto.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at Nicole.Klarides-Ditria@housegop.ct.gov.

Sincerely,

State Rep. Nicole Klarides-Ditria

Ansonia Girl Raises Money and Supplies for Animal Shelter

In photo left to right: Mayor Cassetti, Meghan and A.C.O. Roslonowski
ANSONIA - Mayor David S. Cassetti today congratulated Meghan Bosworth, 9, for her ingenuity and spirit of volunteerism.

Meghan decorated and placed collection boxes in key areas around the city, including City Hall, to help raise money for the city’s Animal Shelter.

Meghan hand crafted the signs placed on the boxes and helped spread the word regarding the need for food, blankets, and toys for the abandoned animals at the Ansonia Animal Shelter.

Cassetti met with Jeannie Roslonowski, Ansonia’s Animal Control Officer, and Meghan to distribute the donations.

“Meghan is a caring, bright young girl who took it upon herself to try to help animals in need," Cassetti said. "The best part about what she did was that it was her own idea and was motivated by her genuine desire to help homeless dogs and cats during the coldest months of the year. I admire her compassion and drive," he said.

Meghan, a fourth-grader at John G. Prendergast Elementary School, is a straight A student.

Seymour students can-and-bottle drive helps shelter animals

By Jean Falbo-Sosnovich
Register Correspondent
SEYMOUR >> Thanks to the efforts of students at Seymour Middle School, dogs and cats at the town’s animal shelter will have plenty to eat and get some needed veterinary care.
Students in the school’s Small Steps Club recently raised more than $300 for the Seymour Animal Shelter by hosting a can and bottle drive at the school. Students on Wednesday presented Animal Control Officer Deborah Ice with the check.
“The students’ goal was to collect 6,100 cans and bottles; that would be enough to fill 38 contractor size trash bags,” said club adviser and teacher Brian Cleveland. “They easily achieved that goal.”
