Derby Library to host book discussion

      DERBY - The Derby Public Library has scheduled its next Lunchtime Book Discussion for
12:30 p.m Sept. 24. 
       The selected title is The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson. This engrossing nonfiction novel is based on real characters and events. 

         Set during Chicago’s 1893 World’s Fair, it intertwines the true tales of Daniel H. Burnham, the architect behind the fair, and Dr. Henry H. Holmes, the serial killer who lured his victims to their deaths in his elaborately constructed "Murder Castle." 

Larson makes the magic, romance, and mystery of the Gilded Age come alive in this chilling tale.

Derby Public Library to host discussion of novel

DERBY - The Derby Public Library has scheduled its next Lunchtime Book Discussion for 12:30 p.m. Aug. 27.   

The selected title is The Light Between Oceans by  M.L. Stedman.  

This unforgettable and deeply moving debut novel is set on a remote Australian island, where a childless couple live quietly running a lighthouse, until a boat carrying a baby washes ashore.   

This compelling story explores a world where there is no right answer, where justice for one person is another’s tragic loss.

Derby Public Library to host book discussion

DERBY - The Derby Public Library has scheduled its next Lunchtime Book Discussion for 12:30 p.m. March 26.

The selected title is the gripping novel The Aviator’s Wife.  Acclaimed novelist Melanie Benjamin pulls back the curtain on the marriage of one of America’s most extraordinary couples, Charles Lindbergh and Anne Morrow Lindbergh.

Despite Anne’s own major accomplishments – she became the first licensed female glider pilot in the United States – Anne is viewed merely as the aviator’s wife.

The author finally takes her out from behind her husband’s shadow and lets her be the heroine in her own story.

Discovering a tattered letter that says she is to open
it only in the event of her husband’s death, Cecelia, a successful family woman, is unable to resist reading the letter and discovers a secret that shatters her life and the lives of two other women.

This is a thought-provoking story about how well it is really possible to know our spouses, and ultimately ourselves.

Derby Public Library offers 'chat and chew,' movies

DERBY - The Derby Public Library, 313 Elizabeth St., has scheduled its next Lunchtime Book Discussion for 12:30 p.m. Jan. 29.

The selected title is the powerful novel, The Orphan Train, by Christina Baker Kline.

Penobscot Indian Molly Ayer is close to “aging out” of the foster care system.

A community service position helping an elderly woman clean out her home is the only thing keeping Molly out of “juvie” or worse.
As she helps Vivian sort through her possessions and memories, Molly learns that she and Vivian aren’t as different as they seem to be.

This is a story of resilience, unexpected friendship, and of secrets that we carry that keep us from finding out who we are.

The Derby Public Library continues its weekly Wednesday Movie Matinees series
for ages 18 and over. 
Newly released DVDs will be shown at 1 p.m. Wednesdays.

Derby Public Library to host book talk

DERBY - The Derby Public Library has scheduled its next Lunchtime Book Discussion for 12:30 p.m. Oct. 30.
The selected title is the funny, poignant, and terrifying novel, The Good House by Ann Leary.  It tells the story of Hildy Good, successful real estate broker, good neighbor, mother and grandmother.  She is also an alcoholic.
 It involves a scandal, some mysticism, babies, old houses, drinking and desire. This is a classic New England tale with colorful characters that bares the secrets of one little town.

Derby library to host book discussion June 26

DERBY - The Derby Public Library has scheduled its next Lunchtime Book Discussion for
at 12:30 p.m. June 26.

            The selected title is the suspenseful page-turner, The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom.
            Orphaned while aboard ship from Ireland, seven-year-old Lavina arrives on the steps of a tobacco plantation where she is to live and work with the slaves of the kitchen house.
           Eventually she is accepted into the world of the big house, and finds herself straddling two very different worlds.
           When she is forced to make a choice, loyalties are questioned, dangerous truths are revealed, and lives are put at risk.
           This novel explores the meaning of family, love, and loyalty.

Book sale, local history sessions planned at Derby library

           DERBY - The Derby Public Library has scheduled its Annual Spring Book Sale.  It will
begin April 20 from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and will continue from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. April 22 and April 23.


          Shoppers are invited to fill a bag for $5. Bags will be provided.
          Adult and children's fiction and non-fiction, paperbacks, magazines, video and audio materials will be available.

Book discussion
The  Library has scheduled its next Lunchtime Book Discussion for 12:30 p.m. April 24.
The selected title is the critically acclaimed bestseller, Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.  On the day of their fifth anniversary, Nick’s wife Amy disappears. Nick immediately becomes the prime suspect, but he maintains his innocence. Told from alternating points of view, Flynn creates an untrustworthy world that changes chapter to chapter. As the case evolves, every couple in town is soon wondering how well they really know the one they love.
 The suspense intensifies until the end when you find out that the truth is more dark and twisted than you ever imagined.

Local history
The Library has begun to schedule weekly Local History Information Sessions on Tuesdays from 6-7:30 p.m. and on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon. 
          The Library’s Local History Coordinator will be available in the Local History Room to answer questions and assist visitors in exploring the numerous local history resources available at the Library.
          Visitors will also be invited to browse through PastPerfect, a software program that enables users to search the Library’s progressively updated local history database.
         Assistance will also be available for research on topics such as genealogy, prominent local figures, major area events, and more.

Derby library to host discussion of memoir

DERBY - The Derby Public Library has scheduled its next Lunchtime Book Discussion for
12:30 p.m. Nov. 28.
            The selected title is the enlightening and intimate memoir, Mrs. Kennedy and Me, by Clint Hill. 
             For four years, from the election of John F. Kennedy in November, 1960, until after the election of Lyndon Johnson in 1964, Clint Hill was the Secret Service agent assigned to guard the intensely private Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy.
            During those four years, he went from being a reluctant guardian to a fiercely loyal watchdog, and in many ways her closest friend.  
            This is the story of a man doing the most exciting job in the world and a tragedy that still haunts him today.
