Derby, CT (May 2019) Do you love cycling events? Do you like to walk? Do you want to support children and families in your community? If you said yes, you should join the Ride/ /Walk for Children at Quarry Walk! Sponsorships and exhibitor spaces are also available for this fun community event that benefits BHcare’s Parent Child Resource Center (PCRC). Endless opportunities to participate!

PCRC provides innovative mental health services, prevention and early intervention programs for more than 900 children and families in the Valley and beyond. 

The Ride/Walk for Children at Quarry Walk will take place on Sunday, June 9 at 300 Oxford Road in Oxford. The event features 15, 36 or 50 mile bike routes plus a new MEGA 35 mile bike challenge and a 2k walk. This year’s walk is in honor of Wade Michael Prajer. A loving son, brother, nephew, grandson and friend, Wade’s life was tragically cut short at the age of 22. While nothing will ever replace the light Wade brought to his community, PCRC will honor his life while raising awareness and resources to provide help and restore hope to others in crisis.

This year’s event also features a FREE Family Fun Fest that includes a bounce house, Touch-a-Truck, live music, food, beverages, yard games and a special performance by 12-time National Champion Stunt Biker Rider Mike Steidley. 

Participants are encouraged to form teams and collect donations online. Registration fee is $50 per cyclist, $20 for walkers, and children 10 and under are $10. Register today at http://bit.ly/RW4Kids.

PCRC to host 15th annual golf tourney in Monroe

Who:             Golfers of all ages are invited to participate in the 15th Annual PCRC “Fore! The Children” Golf Tournament. This event is open to the public.

What:            The day includes 18 holes of golf, lunch, dinner banquet, cocktails, a raffle and live auction, along with many contests throughout the course.

When:           Aug. 20. Registration opens at 11 a.m. followed by lunch with a shotgun start a noon.

Where:          Whitney Farms Golf Club, 175 Shelton Road, Monroe

Why:               “Fore! The Children” will raise funds to support PCRC’s successful clinical programs that deliver a state of the art care to our clients – as a leader in the delivery of mental health services to children and families. Each year we serve more than 1,200 children, many who suffer from serious behavioral and emotional problems, including trauma, abuse and neglect.

Cycling event to raise awareness, funds
SHELTON - The Third Annual Pedal for PCRC community cycling event benefiting the Lower Naugatuck Valley Parent Child Resource Center will be held May 18. 
This signature event will raise awareness and funds for PCRC's many diverse treatment and preventative programs. 
The money raised will be dedicated to our mission of 'Saving lives by passionately caring for children, families, and community.'

Choose from one of three route options and ride at your own pace. 

Start and finish location is at PerkinElmer lower parking area on Bridgeport Avenue in Shelton.

Route Options: 62- Mile Loop (Participants must be 16 and up); 30-Mile Loop (Participants must be 16 and up); 15-Mile Loop (Participants 14-15 permitted with adult guardian); Kids Ride (Participants must be accompanied by adult guardian).

Fundraising Commitment: Each cyclist commits to raising a minimum of $100 for PCRC. Cyclists who raise $250 or more will be issued a custom Pedal for PCRC jersey. 

Volunteers are encouraged to raise funds to help PCRC reach our goal of $75,000. Funds will be used toward deficits and shortfalls in current funding for PCRC’s many diverse programs.

The cycling event will take place rain or shine; please pack any necessary rain gear just in case.

Please note that parents will need to supervise their children at all times during the event.

Derby-Shelton Rotary supports PCRC program

SHELTON - The Derby-Shelton Rotary Club Thursday presented the Parent Child Resource Center  with a check for $3,500 to support the Center’s Adolescent TRECC Program.

The TRECC (Training in Relationships and Emotional Competency for Children) Program focuses on children who are having difficulty meeting school, family or social expectations due to serious behavioral and social disturbances.

TRECC includes group therapy, family therapy, and art and drama therapies. PCRC’s TRECC program operates after school, three hours per day, five days per week.
Included are three separate age groups including the adolescent group, which the members have named the Teen Titans. 

Common problems addressed in the adolescent group include depression, anxiety, self-harming behaviors, school avoidance, trauma, healthy relationships and parent child relational problems.
The funds from the Derby-Shelton Rotary Club will help pay for Parent Child Resource Center staff and program supplies for the adolescent group from April through June, 2014.

“We truly appreciate the ongoing support of the Derby-Shelton Rotary Club,” said the Center’s CEO Michael Wynne.
“Treating mental health problems in children can help save lives and restore hope for the children and their families.”

Guests of riders will not be permitted on PerkinElmer lower parking area grounds until noon. They will be directed to enter the area through the back, in order to keep our front entrance free of car traffic for the safety of riders.
The cycling event will take place rain or shine, pack rain gear just in case.

Parents will need to supervise their children at all times during the event.

PCRC clinician resigns to take post at Quinnipiac

Laura Mutrie, Director of Clinical Services at Parent Child Resource Center in Derby, has resigned to take a position at Quinnipiac University.
In a release colleagues said her expertise, vision, passion, and demand for high quality services has helped improve lives of countless children and families in the Lower Naugatuck Valley and surrounding communities.

During Mutrie's career with PCRC she has helped the organization launch the Early Childhood Consultation Partnership, Prevention Through Early Intervention, Therapeutic Mentoring, Intensive Outpatient Program and Triple P Positive Parenting Program, the release said.

At PCRC she has helped institute evidence based practices, particularly practices focused on the identification and treatment of trauma in children. She oversees the PCRC Outpatient Psychiatric Clinic for Children, licensed by the State of Connecticut which for 10 years has exceeded national averages in client reported measures for access, appropriateness and outcomes.

Mutrie has been an ambassador for PCRC in the community, working with the Department of Children and Families, local schools, police departments, child care centers and numerous health and human service organizations in the Valley.
She is the co-chair of the Derby School Readiness Council and a member of the Executive Committee of the Early Childhood Task Force, which operates as the community collaborative for early care and education for Ansonia, Derby, Seymour and Shelton.

Mutrie helped PCRC develop one of the most vital and sought after behavioral health internship training programs in the State of Connecticut, hosting student interns from a number of prestigious Universities in Connecticut and New York State.

PCRC’s CEO Michael Wynne stated, “We will remember Laura as a dedicated supervisor, educator, clinician, mentor, colleague and friend. We will greatly miss her, and also wish her the best in her new position as Director of Field Instruction in the Master’s Degree Program in Social Work at Quinnipiac University.”

PCRC cycle event raises more than $28,000

The Parent Child Resource Center held its First Annual Pedal for PCRC Cycling Event July 15.

Cyclists participated in courses of 15, 30, and 62 miles.
All three courses traveled through scenic and historic points of interest in the Lower Naugatuck Valley, the long course traversing through a total of six Valley towns.

Start and finish took place at PerkinElmer in Shelton, where riders were sent off and welcomed back by enthusiastic volunteers ringing cowbells.  Volunteers included PCRC staff and board members, community leaders and teens from both the Shelton Youth Service Bureau and the United Way Youth Leadership Council.  Riders and volunteers were treated to breakfast and a BBQ lunch as well as entertainment provided by the “Tune Squad.”

The First Annual Pedal for PCRC has raised over $28,000 so far and fundraising efforts will continue until Sept. 1. 

The top fundraising team for the event was Fletcher-Thompson, whose team of five riders raised over $3,000.
Riders were tracked for comfort and safety by a team of SAG (Support and Gear) Vehicles and rider progress was reported back to event headquarters by volunteers from the Valley Amateur Radio Association.

PCRC Chief Executive Officer Michael Wynne said:  “This event was a wonderful example of how people in the Valley come together to make incredible and fun things happen.  We enjoyed support from individuals, corporations, municipal governments and youth groups.   The reviews were outstanding and we are looking forward to building on this event in the future.”  

PCRC Director of Development, Krista Colletta, coordinated the event. She said, “The success of this event is the result of the many hours and resources donated by our amazing Steering Committee. Partnering with PerkinElmer allowed this first-time event the instant visibility it needed for a roaring success.  We are so thankful to all of our sponsors, volunteers, fundraisers especially our riders.”

PCRC is grateful for the enormous support provided as a result of this first-time signature event.  The agency will utilize funds to support its compassionate work with children, families and the community to understand and cope with the effects of mental and behavioral illness in all aspects of young people’s lives. 

Proceeds will provide the needed funding for increased demand of the critical services PCRC implements for the children and families in our community.
