DERBY -The 2016 Griffin Hospital Gala will celebrate the elegance and enchantment of autumn with an evening of lavish food, enjoyable music and entertaining magic from 7 – 11:30 p.m. on Fri., Sept. 16 at Aria, 45 Murphy Road in Prospect.

 

The evening will feature an unforgettable combination of spectacular views, exquisite dining and first-rate entertainment. Guests will be treated to cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while enjoying Aria’s delightful manicured and sculpted gardens, and breathtaking scenic views. A customized dinner will be served accompanied with live music before a one-of-a-kind performance by award-winning and nationally-renowned magician, mentalist and entertainer, Dennis Watkins. The evening closes out with dancing to the energetic, Latin-inspired sounds and funky beats of the 10-piece band, Sugar. There will also be a silent auction for guests to bid on exciting prizes.

 

Tickets start at $185 per person. Black tie is suggested.

 

Proceeds will benefit essential programs and services for the Griffin Hospital community, ensuring patients have access to state-of-the-art care in a healing, patient-centered, Planetree environment.

This free activity is part of the Library's summer reading programs, and is suitable for preschool and younger children.

Magician to astound audience at Derby Public Library

DERBY - The Derby Public Library invites all adults ages 18 and over to an Evening of Magic at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 12.

Popular area magician Chick Kelman will amaze and astound his audience with a combination of both close-up and stand-up magic tricks. 
In addition to performing locally, Kelman has performed for celebrities such as John Travolta and Oprah.

Area performer to create 'Celtic Magic' in New Haven

Show focuses on beauty of Irish culture
    Ansonia magician Daniel GreenWolf will bring his Irish-themed show "Celtic Magic" back to Lyric Hall Theater in New Haven for a limited four-show run on St. Patrick's Day weekend, March 16 and 17. 

    Shows are at 4 and 8 p.m.

    Known for performing at Renaissance faires and festivals across the United States, GreenWolf has created a show with a theme that focuses on the beauty and magic of the Irish culture. 

  GreenWolf said his Irish heritage was the inspiration for writing the show. 
    "There's just so much beauty in Irish mythology and history that is intertwined with magic," said the Waterbury-born wizard. "I was surprised to see that no had created a show like this before." 
     The show will be combining Celtic tales, music and themes into a high-energy, 80-minute performance.
     Celtic Magic will take place at Lyric Hall Theatre in New Haven, a restored 50-seat theater made to recreate the atmosphere of a 19th century parlour stage. 
    "This allows the audience to get up close and personal with the magic in a way you couldn't do in a big space," GreenWolf said.  He said the show will be appropriate for all ages, despite a few dangerous feats performed during it.

     This is Celtic Magic's second run at Lyric Hall Theatre, initially premiering back in December. "We had such a great response, even despite a terrible winter storm in the middle of the run," Greenwolf said. 

    This time, Lyric Hall Theatre is offering a complimentary beer tasting from a local brewery an hour before showtime (only those over 21 will be allowed to partake) to add to the St. Patrick's Day festivities. 

   Tickets are $20 for general admission and $12 for children under 11; $15 for college students, veterans and members of Irish organizations (IDs will be required at the door for special discounts). Lyric Hall is located at 827 Whalley Ave.

Members of the Valley Arts Council have plenty up their sleeves as they prepare for the Oct. 13 opening of “Magic & Mysticism: The Art of Believing.”

An opening reception will be held from 6-9 p.m. Oct. 13 at Gallery@37, 37 Elizabeth St., Derby. The public is invited.
The show runs through Nov. 3.

Shelton entertainer offers dining out ideas

Ask most people if they enjoy dining out and they'll say 'yes'!
Ask people if they enjoy dining out with the kids, and they'll say 'not so much.'

At times the kids can be a bit active while the parents are trying to enjoy their dinner. Of course kids don't have a lot of patience waiting for their meal to arrive. Imagine if some of that wait time could seem to go faster.

A number of restaurants have a solution to help keep the kids occupied and help the wait seem quick.
These restaurants have weekly entertainment for the kids. The owners realize that sometimes the kids can be a bit difficult and parents may not want to dine out as much.

There are more than 20 restaurants in Connecticut that have magicians, balloon twisters and face painters on a 'kids night' every week.
The kids, and parents, are entertained while waiting for their meal to arrive.
The best part is that the entertainment is free.

Library offers wide range of programs

     DERBY - The CT Works Career Coach will return to the Derby Public Library from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 15. During both the morning session, 10-noon and the afternoon session, 1-3 p.m., instructors will offer Job Search Assistance.
    Learn  where to look for jobs, how to get the job you want, and how to search for jobs on the Internet.  The workshop is free and open to the public.
       Registration is requested; walk-ins will be welcomed on a first come ,first served basis.
    The CT Works Career Coach is a project of The WorkPlace, Inc. operated by Career Resources.

It’s magic!

    The library invites adults 18 and over to an Evening of Magic at 6:30 p.m. June 18. Local magician Bryan Lizotte will amaze and astound his audience with a combination of both close-up and stand-up magic tricks.
     This is a great opportunity to rediscover the child in you.  This program is part of the series, Monday Evening Escapes and Escapades, being offered every Monday throughout the summer.  Registration is requested.
     All 2012 Library summer programming is being made possible through the

 Community Foundation , in memory of David B. Cohen.
      
Basic computing class
 
     The library continues to offer free monthly walk-in basic computer classes.  They are held on the third Tuesday of each month at 10 a.m. and the third Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m.
    This introductory 90-minute class, taught by library staff, covers computer hardware, Windows, basic word processing and Internet searching.
     No reservations are accepted and there is a seven seat limit per class.  June class dates are 10 a.m. June 19 and 6:30 p.m. June 20.

 Free career workshops

     The library continues to host free career development workshops presented by the Connecticut Department of Labor.
     From 10 a.m.- noon June 20, the topic will be “10 Things Every Job Seeker Should Know.” The presentation will include discussion of job search myths, facts, and keys to success.

Ansonia magician has fire in his belly

We've all heard the expression, "If you play with fire, you're going to get burned."

Yesterday I interviewed fellow Ansonia resident Daniel GreenWolf who, if he has heard the warning, chooses not to heed it.

GreenWolf, general manager of the Midsummer Fantasy Renaissance Faire, is going to be "attempting" to escape from being burned at the stake. Let's hope all goes according to plan.

The stunt is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. June 23 at Warsaw Park, 119 Pulaski Highway, Ansonia. It's opening night of the Faire, which will run on three weekends between June 23 and July 8.

A friend said he's like "the new Houdini."

Let's hope GreenWolf is as successful as the greatest escape artist ever, Harry Houdini, and walks away with nary a scratch. 

Either way, Warsaw Park will never be quite the same.
