SHELTON >>  The police department recently retired its police dog, Jager.

Jager was paired with Officer Christopher Nugent, and came to the department in 2008, partially through a donation from People's United Bank, Lt. Robert Kozlowsky said in a press release.

Jager assisted in approximately 75 successful tracks and apprehended as many as 15 dangerous suspects during his career, Kozlowsky said.

Nugent and Jager were also active in the community, visiting area schools and attending community functions and programs.

Kozlowsky said the department is planning on getting another police dog soon. A new handler will also be selected due to Nugent’s recent promotion to the rank of detective,

Anyone who would like to donate to the police K-9 program can do so by sending a check to the Shelton Police Department located at 85 Wheeler St. Checks should be made out to "City of Shelton Special K-9 account."

Shelton program highlights cancer surgery options

Shelton Police Officer Mary Beth White

SHELTON - I attended a talk Monday night at the R.D. Scinto Auditorium about reconstructive surgery techniques for breast cancer survivors.

It was presented by Dr. Andrew S. Kenler and Dr. Shareef Jandali. They are members of the Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center at Bridgeport Hospital, part of the Yale-New Haven Health System.

The event was organized by Shelton Police Officer Mary Beth White, pictured above, who was diagnosed last year with Stage 1 breast cancer.

As a breast cancer survivor myself I commend White for bringing such an educational presentation to the community during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Police union to collect food at Shelton Day

SHELTON - The Shelton Police Union will be holding a food drive on Sunday during Shelton Day.
Non-perishable foods and cash donations will be accepted and will benefit the Shelton High School food bank.

The Shelton High School food bank was started to help provide assistance to families with children who attend any school within the Shelton school system.
Every day more and more of our residents, through no fault of their own, are finding it increasingly difficult to provide for their families. It is understood that everyone is feeling the impact of the current state of the economy, but it is important to help our neighbors in need.
Since the food bank focuses on children, please keep “kid-friendly” items in mind. Items such as peanut butter, jelly, pancake mix, syrup, macaroni and cheese, hot chocolate mix, canned vegetables and fruit, and tuna will help build up the food bank before the upcoming holidays. Please be sure to check expiration dates on the donated items.
Non-food items are also needed. These items include, but are not limited to, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, and deodorant. Also liquid dish detergent, plastic wrap, and aluminum foil will be accepted.
Cash donations collected will be used to purchase grocery gift cards.
For more information contact Officer Mary Beth White at the Shelton Police Department, 203-924-1544 ext. 416.
