Griffin in Derby to offer men's health screenings

DERBY - Griffin Hospital will host two men’s health talks and free health screenings this June to help men know and understand their health numbers.

Dr. Brian Sperling will present “How ya doin’, Man?” at 6 p.m. June 12 and June 24 at the hospital, 130 Division St. 
In recognition of Men’s Health Month, these talks will explain common health issues for men and when men should be screened to see if they are at risk.

The first talk on June 12 will focus on prostate and urinary health. Attendees over 50 years old can have a free Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test and consultation. Testings will be held at 5:30 p.m.
The June 24 presentation will focus on testosterone and sexual health. Attendees can receive a free blood pressure and A1C diabetes screening and consultation. Screenings will be held at 5:30 p.m.

Participants at both talks will receive a “Play for Free Card” for the Sports Center of Connecticut in Shelton.


'Healthy U' series of talks 
The presentation is part of Griffin Hospital's “Healthy U” series of free wellness talks featuring Griffin Hospital medical experts and community partners providing trusted health information and answers to questions on a wide range of topics.

Griffin Hospital in Derby to host Father's Day card contest


DERBY -  Griffin Hospital’s Health Initiative for Men (HiM) is holding a Valleywide Father’s Day art contest to design the front of its 2014 Father’s Day Card.
 
The contest is open to Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, Seymour, and Shelton students from elementary school to 12th grade. Entries will be split into an Elementary School Division (up to 6th grade) and a Middle School/High School Division (7th-12th grade). 
Winners will receive U.S. savings bonds and their art will be featured on Father’s Day cards distributed throughout the Valley.
Design entries should include the depiction of the love between a father and child/children, and a Father’s Day wish encouraging fathers to be aware of/take charge of their own health.

Prizes of $250 will be awarded to one student from each age group in each community for the winning design, and $125 for the runners up. 
Two grand prize division winners will be chosen from the pool of community winners and will receive an additional $250.

Applications are available at each Valley public school. Submissions must be sent to the high school art department where the contestant lives by May 15.

Griffin Hospital to hold men's health day in Shelton

 DERBY – Griffin Hospital’s Health Initiative for Men (HiM) invites men to receive free health screenings, earn some free games and take a chance to win a grill at its first Men’s Health Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 29 at The Sports Center of Connecticut, 784 River Road, Shelton.

Held in recognition of Men’s Health Month, the event is entitled “The Nuts & Bolts of Men’s Health” and will feature a series of health information tables and free health screenings, including Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test, blood sugar, blood pressure and Body Mass Index. 

For each station completed, attendees can earn a “Play For Free” card from The Sports Center, which can be used at most of the Center’s attractions such as the driving range, mini golf and batting cages. Attendees who complete five or more stations will receive a $25 activity card for the Center.
Attendees will be entered into a drawing for a Char-Broil grill worth $399.

Griffin initiative holds Father's Day art contest in Valley schools

DERBY -  Griffin Hospital’s Health Initiative for Men (HiM) is holding a Valleywide Father’s Day art contest to design the front of its 2013 Father’s Day Card.

The contest is open to Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, Seymour, and Shelton students from elementary school to 12th grade.

Entries will be split into an Elementary School Division (up to Grade 6) and a Middle School/High School Division (Grades 7-12).
Winners will receive US savings bonds and their art will be featured on Father’s Day cards distributed throughout the Valley.

Design entries should include the depiction of the love between a father and child/children, and a Father’s Day wish encouraging fathers to be aware of/take charge of their own health.
Division winners from each Valley town will receive $500 savings bonds and second-place winners will be awarded $250 saving bonds.

The Valley Arts Council will select the overall winners in each division and the grand prize of a $1,000 savings bond will be awarded to the winners.

Applications are available at each Valley public school. Submissions must be sent to the high school art department where the contestant lives by April 30.
