Valley Towns Close all Parks, Playgrounds, Basketball Courts Amid COVID-19 Concerns

Sharing information from Seymour First Selectman Kurt Miller, Ansonia Mayor David Cassetti and Derby Mayor Richard Dziekan:

Mayor Richard Dziekan

ANSONIA: Attention residents- At this time for public safety, we must close all city basketball courts, city playgrounds and city parks to the public. If you are out for a walk in open space, please practice social distancing by staying six feet apart- Ansonia Mayor David Cassetti

SEYMOUR: Effective tonight (March 23) at 5 pm, we will be closing all parks and playgrounds in Seymour to go along with all of the sports fields on school property. We are doing this in the best interest of public health and safety. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause- Seymour First Selectman Kurt Miller

DERBY: As we continue to navigate our new reality amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, it is important that local government officials help set the tone to mitigate the spread of the virus.

In accordance with this idea, Derby will be following the lead of Seymour, Ansonia and Oxford and closing our public parks until further notice.

This includes:

-Payden Park/Ryan/DeFillippo Field (baseball, football/soccer field and track),
-Bradley School court and playground, Irving School court and playground,
-Witek Park Soccer Field,
-the picnic grove and basketball courts

As of right now, the Derby Greenway will remain open, but we strongly encourage you to practice social distancing if you chose to utilize it.

These restrictions will remain in place until further notice- Derby Mayor Richard Dziekan

Seymour First Selectman Kurt Miller's Code Red message on snowstorm prep

The following information is from a Code Red message that Seymour First Selectman Kurt Miller sent out to residents and posted on his Facebook page regarding preparations for the upcoming snowstorms:

Text of today's Code Red message. Sorry in advance for any typos....
This is Seymour First Selectman Kurt Miller with a public service announcement utilizing the Code Red System. With more snow projected in the coming days we will need to take some steps to allow us to properly prepare. Effective Friday, February 6th at 8pm there will be a parking ban encompassing Main, First, Columbus, Wakeley, DeForest and Bank Streets in the downtown area. This ban will stay in effect ...until Saturday, February 7th at 8am so that snow can be removed from the downtown area. During this time we ask that all cars be removed from these streets. Any cars that are not will be towed. Should you have any questions regarding this, please contact the Seymour Police Department at 203-881-7600.
As you know, we have more snow in the forecast. The duration and amount of snow expected are still unknown, but most suggest we could see up to another foot of snow. The town is taking all necessary steps to prepare for whatever is needed. We have increased our supply of salt and all of our trucks are ready to go to keep our street clear. As a reminder, property owners are responsible for the clearing of sidewalks in front of their property within 24 hours of the end of the storm. I would also like to ask that you pay special attention to any curb cuts and cross walks attached to those sidewalks to make sure that they are cleared for pedestrian traffic. I do understand that this isn’t always the easiest thing to do, but we need to all work together to make our community as safe as we possibly can.
I will provide more information as needed in the coming days. Have a great rest of the day.

Seymour police donate $1,000 to Memorial Day Parade

SEYMOUR – The Board of Police Commissioners and the Seymour Police Department have donated $1,000 to the Seymour Remembers Committee, which plans Seymour’s annual Memorial Day parade.
Police Chief Michael Metzler stopped by Town Hall Wednesday and hand-delivered the check to First Selectman Kurt Miller.
Metzler brought a request to the Board of Police Commissioners at its Monday meeting to make a donation of funds gathered from their clothing donations boxes. It was approved unanimously.

“We decided as a department that we wanted to give back to the Town because they’ve done so much for us over the years," Metzler said.
"We thought this was a great way to do that and honor the veterans who have fought for our freedom at the same time.”

Al Yagovane, chairman of the Seymour Remembers Committee, has been requesting donations for the past several months because donations have declined over the past few years.  Of the donation, Yagovane said, “The Committee would like to thank the Chief of Police and his staff who donated to the Seymour Memorial Day Parade Committee. It’s greatly appreciated.”

Although many generous donors have contributed including the Seymour Police Department, the Committee is still seeking donations of any denomination.
Anyone interested in making a donation should send checks made out to the Seymour Memorial Day Committee to the First Selectman’s Office at Town Hall.

This is a press release from First Selectman Kurt Miller's office.
