Read to Spirit the Dog



DERBY - Derby Neck Library Children's Librarian Miss Kathy will host another popular B.A.R.K. program at 5 p.m. Jan. 16 when all ages are invited to drop in and BE A READING KID to a guest dog.

Spirit, a Newfoundland, is a great listener and will be here once again for children to read to. You can bring your own book or choose one of ours from the library. And if children simply want to stop in to just say hello and visit, that’s cool too.

 
No registration is needed, just drop in.

Lots to do at the Derby Neck Library

DERBY - On Sat., Jan. 16 from 2 to 4 p.m., the Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave., hosts a Teen Video Tournament featuring the newly released Super Mario Maker on Wii U.  All teens and tweens are invited to compete for a grand prize.  Free refreshments will be available through the afternoon.  Bring your friends for a fun time.  For details please call 203-734-1492.
 
On Mon., Jan 18 at 12:30-1:30 p.m., the Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave. will host Women’s Forum, a literary discussion group that focuses on short stories and poetry.  This month’s stories are “Ted and Angeline” by Dinah Lampitt and “Stuff and Sawdust” by Valerie Thame.  Copies are available at the library.  Feel free to bring a light lunch.  We serve free coffee and tea.  For details please call 203-734-1492.

Smash Club! for teens and tweens 
Thursday, Sept. 3 from 2-4 p.m.
The first meeting of the Smash Club! for teens and tweens. Come play exciting games on our Nintendo Wii U  just for fun, not for competition. Featured will be the Super Smash Brothers and other newly released games. Bring a friend and enhance your skills.

Dinner and a Movie for ages 18 and older
Thursday, Sept 3 at 5:30 p.m.,
Come enjoy this month’s feature film, “Mad Max,” shown in high definition Blu-ray on our large screen. A free dinner is served at intermission and free movie-style refreshments are also available during the show.

Tech Talks,
Monday, Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. and again on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 10:30 a.m., 
Tech Talks, an on-going monthly program that offers advice and some training on how to best use the technology in your life.  Topics vary each month, so please call the library for this month’s featured talk.  Feel free to bring your questions to this session as well.

Women’s Forum

A monthly lunch group that discusses literature, mainly short stories. This month’s stories are “Me and Big Foot” by Jill McCorkle” and “The Last Few Kilometres” by Leonid Tsypkin; copies of the stories are available at the library. Bring a light lunch if you wish, we serve free coffee and tea.

Advanced Care Planning session
Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 6:30 p.m.
Lead by Daun Barrett, director of Community Outreach and Parish Nursing at Griffin Hospital, learn all the details of the process of planning for future medical decisions. This method  reduces the stress and confusion of making medical decisions in crisis situations. This is a free program.

Evening Book Club
Monday, Sept. 28 at 6:30 p.m.
This group meets monthly, on the final Monday, to discuss shorter books of fiction, memoir, or non-fiction, including inspirational themes. Each discussion is both stimulating and informative. Free copies of the books are available at the library; this month we focus on “The Actual” by Saul Bellow.

This month’s feature film is “It Happened One Night” shown on blu-ray. This is a 1937 Frank Capra classic featuring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. Refreshments will be served, including a free dinner at intermission. To reserve a seat, please call the library at 203-734-1492.

“Springtime Special Quiche.”
Sunday, May 17 at 2 p.m.

“Women’s Forum”
Monday, May 18 at 12:30 p.m.
This is a discussion group devoted to short stories, poetry, history, and related arts. Our two stories for this month are “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” by Ernest Hemingway and “The Lumber-Room” by H.H. Munro. Free copies of these stories are available at the library.  You may wish to bring a light lunch. We serve free coffee and tea.

“The Evening Book Club”
Monday, May 18 at 6:30 p.m.
This month’s title is “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” by Truman Capote. Copies are available at the library. Our club is devoted to reading novels by the best authors , as well as  some memoirs and inspirational writings.

“Writers’ Round”
Thursday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m.
This a workshop for writers of all genres—scripts, prose, poetry, fiction, etc.  Come join us in creative exercises and share your original works.

Teen Movie Night
Tuesday, May 26 at 5:30 p.m.
This month’s feature film, shown in blu-ray on a large screen,  is “Woman in Black 2.” Bring a friend or two and enjoy; we serve free refreshments.  This  event is for ages 17 and younger-- teens and tweens.

On Thursday, April 2 at 5:30 p.m.: “Dinner and a Movie,”  for ages 18 and older. This month’s feature film shown in blu-ray is “Birdman," winner of the academy award for best picture. Free refreshments will be served including a dinner at intermission. No registration is required, but doors close at 5:45 p.m.

On Wednesday, April 8 at 6:30 p.m.: “Bedtime Music and Movement.” Youngsters are invited to join Miss Kathi in singing and dancing under our indoor stars. Wear your jammies if you wish and bring along a favorite stuffed animal.

On Tuesday, April 14 at 6 p.m. and again on Wednesday, April 15 at 10:30 a.m.: “Tech Talks.” This is a free program that offers various topics each month to help you best make use of the latest products and programs in technology. On Thursday, April 16 at 6:30 p.m.: “Writers’ Round.” This is a writers’ workshop for authors of all genres, including prose, poetry, fiction, non-fiction, scripts, etc. Come share your original works with others and enhance your creativity with a writing prompt.

At 6-7:30 p.m., and again on Wednesday, March 18 at 10:30 a.m. to noon, the Derby Neck Library presents “Tech Talks.” This free program offers ideas and instruction on how to best use new concepts and gadgets in technology to fit your needs. At 6:30 p.m., therapy dogs Thor and Bailey visit Derby Neck Library for B.A.R.K. (Be a Reading Kid). Parents are able to register their children for a 15-minute session to read to a trained listening dog. To select a time, please call the library.

At 6:30 p.m., the Derby Neck Library offers “Writers’ Round” a workshop group for writers of all genres—prose, fiction, poetry, history, scripts, etc. Come share your original works and practice writing from an engaging prompt selection.

Saturday, March 21
At 2 p.m. the Derby Neck Library hosts “The Kerry Boys” in a free concert open to the public. Enjoy this dynamic and highly engaging Celtic musical performance. These entertainers  always  give a crowd-pleasing, rousing time. To reserve a seat, please call the library.

Tuesday, March 24

'Dinner and a Movie' and 'Meet the Author' at Derby Neck Library

On Saturday, March 7 at 2 p.m., the Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave. presents “Meet the Author,” with Michael Sweeney of Shelton.  Poet Sweeney is the author of the recently released “Octagon Commonweal.”  He will be reading from his book , copies of which will be available for purchase and for signing.  Sweeney has an M.F.A. from Brooklyn College and has been twice nominated for the Pushcart Prize.  This is a free event; for details please call the library at 203-734-1492.

Thurs. Feb. 5 at 5:30 p.m.: Dinner and a Movie. This is a free event for people 18 years of age and older. Our movie presentation this month is “John Wick” shown in blu-ray.  Refreshments will be served as well as a free dinner during intermission. Come and bring friends to a fun night out.

On Wed., Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m.: Bedtime Music and Movement with Miss Kathi. Bring a favorite stuffed animal and wear your jammies, if you wish, as we will sing and dance under our indoor stars.

January 2015 events at Derby Neck Library

On Saturday, Jan. 10 from 2-4 p.m.: Teen Video Tournament featuring Super Smash Bros on Wii U.  Refreshments will be served throughout and prizes awarded. Bring a friend or two and challenge them to a fast-paced fun game on our large screen TV.

On Monday, Jan. 12 at 5:30 p.m.: Dinner and a Movie for ages 18 and older. Come and enjoy the new movie “Pride” on Blu-ray. Based on a true story, this film describes the interactions of gay-activists and  striking miners in the U.K. Refreshments will be served, as well as a dinner at intermission.

On Tuesday, Jan. 13 from 6-7 p.m.: “Meet the Author,” featuring local writer Joe Marazzi, discussing his new book “A Bowlful of Memories.” This book commemorates the 100th anniversary of Yale Bowl by focusing on the numerous memorable football games and concerts that have been held there. Signed copies will be available for purchase.

On Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 6:30 p.m.: Bedtime Music and Movement featuring our Miss Kathi. Wear your jammies and bring a favorite stuffed animal to sign and dance under our indoor stars.

December events at Derby Neck Library

The following events will take place at the Derby Neck Library in December.

On Thurs., Dec. 4,  at 5:30 p.m. the Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave. will host “Dinner and a Movie” for ages 18 and older.  Come enjoy a recent movie on Blu-Ray ( high definition) and have a free dinner, besides snacks.  For the title of the movie shown this month, please call the library at 203-734-1492.

On Tues., Dec. 9 at 6 p.m. the Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave. hosts Ansonia author and sports specialist, Rich Marazzi.  He will be discussing his new book, “A Bowlful of Memories, 100 Years of Football at the Yale Bowl.”  All aspects of Yale football history are covered. Ed Quinlan to discuss new book, 'The Justice Imperative,' at Derby Neck Library

DERBY >> Author Ed Quinlan will appear Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 6 p.m. at the Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave., to discuss his new book for the Malta Justice Initiative, “The Justice Imperative.”

The Malta Justice Initiative works as an advocacy group for the incarcerated and seeks to educate the public about the need for criminal justice reforms. Quinlan will focus on Connecticut’s rates of incarceration and re-incarceration issues.

Derby Neck Library offers evening book club

DERBY >> The Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave., will offer an Evening Book Club on Monday, Oct. 27 at 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Run by Patricia E. Sweeney, Ph.D., of the library staff, this club focuses on memoirs, fiction, history and similar topics in novella length editions. The book for October is “Riding in Cars with Boys” by Wallingford native Beverly Donofrio. Copies of the book are available to be checked out at the library.

This is a new club (September was the first meeting), which will meet on the final Monday of each month. For further information, call the library at 203-734-1492.

Derby Neck Library offers games, tech talk, movies, and more

DERBY - The Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave. will present a free program, Ancient Games, for 'tweens, teens, and adults at 6 p.m. Sept. 2.
Come learn Go, parcheesi, mancala, chess, and similar games.
All boards and instructions are provided to help you enjoy these games of strategy.

Dinner and a movie
The Library will host Dinner and a Movie (for adults 18 and older) at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 4.
This month’s feature film is Blue Jasmine by Woody Allen, shown on blu-ray.
Refreshments will be served, including free pizza at intermission.

Women's Forum
The Library will host Women's Forum at 12:30 p.m. Sept 15.  Women’s Forum is a monthly discussion group that focuses on short stories, poetry, current events, history, and the arts. Free coffee and tea. Bring a light lunch if you wish.  

Tech Talks
Tech Talks will be presented at 6 p.m. Sept 15 and again at 10:30 a.m. Sept 17.

Teen Movie Night will happen at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 23, featuring Godzilla shown on blu-ray.  Only 20 seats are available; call early to register.
Free refreshments will be served, including pizza.

Read to a canine
The Library welcomes Thor and Bailey our special dog friends your child can read to at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 24.
Each child has a 15-minute session with the canines and a chance to practice their reading skills as a new school year begins. Registration requested.

Evening Book Club
At 6:30 p.m. Sept. 29 the Library inaugurates the Evening Book Club.
Each month a book of fiction, history, biography, or current events will be the focus. 
Books of moderate length and available in paperback format will be selected each month.
The first selection is Two Old Women: An Alaska Legend of Betrayal, Courage and Survival by Velma Wallis.
Free copies will be available at the library approximately one month before the club’s first meeting.

Puzzle tourney, bat program, movies and more planned at Derby Neck

August activities slated at library
DERBY - The Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave. offers a variety of programs for August.

There will be a Teen Jigsaw Puzzle Tournament in 3-D at 2 p.m. Aug. 4.

Teens and their friends may work solo or in a team to assemble their 3-D puzzles and compete for a grand prize.
All completed puzzles may be taken home. Free refreshments will be served. Registration requested. 

Program about bats
From 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 5 kids and their parents are invited to a program on the Wonderful World of Bats, including a slide show and audio presentation.
This program includes an opportunity to craft a Bat T-shirt—bring your own shirt with you, or you may purchase one that day for $4.
This program best suits kids ages 5 and older.  Registration requested.

Ancient Games
At 6 p.m. Aug. 5 join us for our monthly event, Ancient Games.  All teens and adults are invited to learn and compete at Go, Mancala, Parcheesi, Chess, and more.
All materials and instructions are provided by the library. 

Movie Night
All teens are invited to the Library for an I-Spy Movie Night at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 6.
Our feature film shown on Blu-ray is ” Divergent.” Teens compete for prizes by following clues while watching the movie.
Free refreshments are served, including a pizza dinner at intermission.  Only 20 seats are available; call to register.

Pizza and movie
At 5:30 p.m. Aug. 7 all adults are invited for Dinner and a Movie Night.
This month’s feature film, shown on blu-ray is “The Princess Bride.” A free pizza dinner will be served at intermission.  

Jazz concert
At 2 p.m. Aug. 9 there  will be a free jazz concert performed by the professional group, Too Human.
They will cover standards from the American Songbook with their unique interpretations. They combine vocals with guitars, percussion, bass, and a mouth trombone.
This ensemble is a high energy and humorous group that should not be missed. It's suitable for adults and their families.  

Video game tourney
At 1 p.m. Aug. 12 the Library will host a Teen Video Game Tournament.
Games vary each session and are played on our Wii U console. Watch the library bulletin boards for the games offered.
All teens are invited to compete for prizes: all participants get free refreshments.
Registration is not required but is strongly suggested. 

Learn science
At 6:30 p.m. Aug. 13 all kids and their parents are invited to enjoy the Science Tellers talk about Dragons and Dreams for children.
Our presenters tell a fascinating story that is interactive, showing you the almost real sights and sounds of a Dragon. Learn about some basic science too.
This program is best suited for ages 5 and older.

Singing and dancing
On Aug 14 at 10 a.m. and again at 11 a.m. Miss Deidre will be singing and dancing with young children to special summer songs.
Come to either hour, as she repeats the same program.  


Mad Science
At 10 a.m. Aug. 18 all toddlers and their parents are invited to the Library to enjoy Mad Science  for Toddlers and Children.
This event lets you have a chance to enjoy a space adventure as we will launch a rocket in our garden space.
At 10:45 a.m. children in Grades K-4 are invited to race rocket balloons and devise a balloon powered rocket car.  You can even build a space copter to take home.  Registration requested.  Bring your child to the appropriate age-session for a happy experience.

Tech Talks
August brings two sessions of Tech Talks.
At 6 p.m. Aug. 18 and again at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 20 join our staff members as they provide information and suggestions on what is new in technology and how to best  integrate it into your daily lives.
This month we feature a PowerPoint presentation on the Windows 8 operating system.  

Beach Party
Children are invited to our annual Beach Party at 3 p.m. Aug. 20. Children may wear their bathing suits and be ready to enjoy our sprinklers, baby pools, and water toys.
We also host Mr. Bungles with his giant bubble presentations up to 10 feet tall.  Bring a small picnic if you wish.  All age children are welcomed. 

Summer party
At 2 p.m. Aug. 21 all teens are invited for a party to wrap-up summer reading.  
Free refreshments will be served and prizes and gifts will be awarded to teens who have fulfilled their Tier Level reading pledges.  

Writers' Round
At 6:30 p.m. Aug. 21 the monthly session of Writers’ Round for teens and adults will be held. 
This is an authors’ workshop for writers of all genres—scripts, poetry, prose, fiction, etc.
Bring your original works to share with others.

Derby Neck to host writers' workshop, women's forum, tech talk

DERBY - The Derby Neck Library invites all teen and adult authors to Writers’ Round at 6:30 p.m. July 17.  
This is a workshop to share and discuss each others' original works, including poems, scripts, fiction, and more.
Writing prompts are given to help focus your creativity. 

Women's Forum
The Library hosts Women’s Forum at 12:30 p.m. July 21. 
Bring a light lunch and enjoy free coffee and tea.  This month we discuss two short stories—“Fly” by Isaac Asimov and “Verona” by Harold Brodkey.
Free copies of both are available at the Library. 

Tech Talks
Tech Talks now meets at two different times each month. From 6:30 -7:30 p.m. July 14 we present the latest in technological advances and how to best use them to your advantage.  The same talk will be presented from 10:30-11:30 a.m. July 16.

Summer = fun for kids at Derby Neck Library

DERBY - The Derby Neck Library will host Ancient Games, a program for all ages, from 6-8 p.m. July 1.
Come learn how to play mancala, parchessi, go, backgammon, chess or other games of skill and strategy. Bring a friend or family member for an evening of fun.

From 1-3 p.m. July 8 the Library will host a Video Game Tournament for teens and 'tweens.  Games to be played will be announced on posters in the library.  Come compete for prizes and enjoy free refreshments  Bring your friends.  

Learn about Leonardo
The Library presents “Little Leonardo and the Fantastic Flying Machine”  at 10:30 a.m. July 10.
This free program visits a young Leonardo DaVinci and watches him as he builds a flying machine under the guidance of Master del Verrocchio, a famous painter and sculpture of 15th century Italy.  This event is geared toward children ages 3 and older.

Teen movie
I-Spy Teen Movie Night will be held from 5:30-8 p.m. July 10.  Come enjoy “Insidious, Chapter 2” on Blu-ray.  A free pizza dinner will be served at intermission.  Watch the movie for clues in a game of I-Spy.
Winners will be awarded prizes. Registration is required.

Create a craft
A free crafting program for teens and 'tweens will be offered from 2-4 p.m. July 14.
Make original creations to keep using felt.  Materials and all the tools you need will be provided. Bring a friend. Registration required.
 
Balloon animal fun
The Library presents Mr. Bungle with his comedy and fantastic balloon animals at 2 p.m. July 16.  All ages are invited to this free program and everyone gets to take home one balloon sculpture. Registration required.

Puzzle tournament
From 2-4 p.m. July 17  the Library will host a 3-D Puzzle Tournament for teen and tweens.  Working alone or with a friend fashion a variety of 3-D puzzles.  First people to complete their project are awarded prizes.  All finished puzzles may be taken home.
Registration required.

Science program
At 10 a.m. July 23 the Library presents “Marvelous Marvin’s Science Dance Experience.”  Come learn basic science principles while you also discover the magical facts of movement.  Play with fun toys while you enjoy the experience.  This program is suited to ages Pre-K through Grade 4. Registration required.


Workshop on drug trends
From 6 -7:30 p.m. July 24 the Library will host a free workshop and information session on Connecticut Drug Trends, presented by the Derby Youth Bureau. 
This is an opportunity for parents to discover what is happening in our state and ways you can help your children avoid any dangers. Special focus will be given to the new marijuana laws.

Music for little ones
On July 28 at 10 a.m. and again at 11 a.m. all babies, toddlers, and their caregivers are invited  to enjoy music with Deirdre Murtha.  She sings and plays while the little ones enjoy their own musical instruments and colorful scarves to dance with.

Derby Neck Library offers games, women's forum, tech talk, movies and more

DERBY - A representative from Master’s Table Community Meals will visit Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave. at 6:30 p.m. June 2 to describe the non-profit’s functions.
The organization offers a monthly community dinner open to the public. Other forms of assistance to those in need will also be explained.

Come learn how you can participate and also how you may aid them.
This is a free program. 

Ancient Games
At 6 p.m. June 3 the library hosts Ancient Games.
This monthly event offers participants of all ages instruction in mancala, go, parcheesi and other games of skill and strategy.  Bring a friend or relative and enjoy a free evening of fun.
Dinner and movie
At 5:30 p.m. June 5 the Library presents the movie “Her” on blu-ray and a large screen venue.  This is Dinner and a Movie Night open to people ages 18 and older.  Snacks are provided and at intermission a free pizza supper is served.  

Music and movement
At 6:30 p.m. June 11 the Library offers Bedtime Music and Movement with Miss Kathi.  Bring a favorite stuffed animal and wear your pajamas, if you wish.  We will sing and dance together under the stars.  

Women's Forum
At 12:30 p.m. June 16 the Library presents Women’s Forum, a monthly discussion group open to women of all ages.  We talk about current literature, as well as literature, history, and the arts.  This month’s topics are poems about fathers and notable graduation speeches.  Freee coffee and tea;  participants may wish to bring a light lunch.  


Tech Talks
At 6 p.m. June 16 and again and at 10:30 a.m. June the Library presents Tech Talks—a monthly series.  We feature topics dealing with new technologies and their best uses.  This month begins our evening and morning scheduling, in which a single topic is discussed at two different times of day.  Bring your questions  for our tech gurus as well.  

Writers' Round
At 6:30 p.m. June 19  the Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave. hosts Writers’ Round a workshop for writers of all genres—poetry, fiction, prose, nonfiction, scripts, etc.  Writing prompts are offered to spark your creativity.  Come share your original works with other local authors.  

Summer Reading Clubs
On  June 23 the Library will begin Summer Reading Clubs—for kids in primary grades, middle school, and high school. 
Come in to pick up your starter bag to keep you stay organized and focused.  Free prizes are offered for good readers.  Teens will compete for gifts and enjoy a special scavenger game.  Challenge your friends to see who can read the most this summer; register soon.

Derby Neck offers movies, games, book discussion, birthday celebration

DERBY - Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave., hosts Dinner and a Movie at 5:30 p.m. May 1 for adults ages 18 and older.  
Watch a high-definition recent movie on our large screen and enjoy a free pizza dinner at intermission. 
This program occurs each month. This month’s feature film will be interesting and entertaining.

Ancient Games
The Library presents Ancient Games at 6 p.m. May 6.
This free program for teens and adults offers instruction in the games of Go, Mahjong, Parcheesi, and Mancala.  All game boards and pieces are provided by the library. 
Bring a friend or relative and enjoy new fun strategy challenges. 

Music and Movement
At 6:30 p.m. May 14 join Miss Kathi for the monthly children’s program, Bedtime Music and Movement.  Wear your pajamas and bring a favorite stuffed animal to dance and sing along with you.

Celebrating Frances Kellogg; author to sign books
At 6 p.m. May 15 join the Library staff in celebrating the birthday of our donor, Frances Osborne Kellogg. 
Vicki Kain, noted Derby author of “Travels with Judy,” which chronicles her journeys in the U.S. with her dog, will describe her writing and sign copies of her book. 

After her presentation,  the library will host an open-mic session for participants to read from their original works—poetry, prose, non-fiction, sketches, or such. 
Birthday cake to celebrate Kellogg will be served to round out the evening.  

Women's group
Women’s Forum, a discussion group for women focusing on literature, history, and current issues will be held at 12:30 p.m. May 19. This month we discuss two short stories by Noel Coward—“Traveler’s Joy” and “Stop Me if You’ve Heard This.”  
Free copies of the two stories are available at the library. Come enjoy the brisk, biting, and sometimes whimsical humor of  Coward.  Feel free to bring a light lunch. Free coffee and tea. 

 Teen movie
All teens and tweens are invited to Teen Movie Night at 5:30 p.m. May 20.
Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave.  This month’s feature is “I Frankenstein” shown in high definition on a large screen.  
A free pizza supper is served at intermission. Registration is required as seating is limited. 

Tech Talks
At 10:30 a.m. May 21 the Library will host Tech Talks.
This month’s topic is Internet Searching - featuring some basic tips on refining your searches as well as a highlight of some new technological features.  Registration is required.


Read to canines
Children are invited to the  Library at 6 p.m. May 21 to read to Thor and Bailey, two listening dogs.  
This monthly program called B.A.R.K. (Be a Reading Kid), which promotes good reading skills in children. 
Each child registered has a 15-minute session; call the library at 203-734-1492 to register your child.
