SHELTON - Adam's House invites the public to the 3rd Annual Ladies Healing Hearts Paddle Tournament starting at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 28 at area clubs. Proceeds from the event benefit Adam’s House, a nonprofit center in Shelton that provides free educational and support programs to Connecticut children and families struggling to cope with grief.

 

Thirty-two teams will compete in the women’s-only paddle tournament held at multiple locations from 8:30 a.m. until about 2 p.m. Aspetuck Valley Country Club at 67 Old Redding Road in Weston will host the event’s luncheon, semi-finals and championship game, but players also will paddle for a cause at Patterson Country Club in Fairfield, CT; Weston Field Club and Wilton YMCA.

 

“The Healing Hearts Paddle Tournament has been enormously popular, drawing competitive players and supporters, who enjoy a great day of play, plus lunch and a chance to win prizes, including tickets for the upcoming Jets-Patriots game,” said Adam’s House Founder and Executive Director Allison Wysota.

 

The winner will go home with three tickets to the Nov. 25^th  Jets-Patriots game, plus parking.

JoyRide® Cycling & Fitness classes and spa massage treatments also will be raffled off at the event’s luncheon.

Adam's House Names New Board Members

SHELTON - Adam’s House announced the appointment of two new members to the Board of Directors for the nonprofit grief support and education center in Shelton.

Joining the Board are: Sarah Prout, the Director of Finance and Human Resources at The Arc of Litchfield County, Inc. (LARC) in Torrington, CT, and Renata Plonski, who brings over a decade of healthcare management experience to her new position.

Prout and Plonski will join Board President Adam Lewis and seven other board members in providing leadership to Adam’s House, which provides free educational and peer-support programs to grief-stricken children and families in Connecticut.

Adam’s House Founder and Executive Director Allison Wysota said Prout and Plonski have exceptional backgrounds that will certainly be an asset for Adam’s House.

“Sarah Prout and Renata Plonski not only possess outstanding credentials in their respective fields, but both women have a strong community spirit and dedication to helping others,” said Adam’s House Founder and Executive Director Allison Wysota. “We know their education, talents and expertise will help Adam’s House craft valuable strategies and new ideas to enhance our mission. Shop & Sip Event to Benefit Shelton's Adam's House

Newly opened Southern Tide & Splash of Pink in Westport will host “Shopping and Shampagne,” an April 25th fundraiser to benefit Adam’s House, a grief and education loss center providing no-cost programs to grieving children and families in Connecticut. 

 

Guests can enjoy a glass of champagne while shopping for their new spring wardrobe and accessories at Westport’s newest shop located at 275 Post Road East in Westport, CT.  Ten percent of sales at the fundraiser from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. will benefit Adam’s House. The event is open to the public. 

 

Adam’s House Board Member Donna Nayden and Southern Tide Manager Maria Terrell are hosting the event.

 

“Adam’s House is a place where grieving families can turn in their time of need,” said Nayden. “Its programs provide families with hope, comfort, support and age-appropriate coping skills. Grief Education Center Creates Memorial Garden

SHELTON – A $2,500 grant from the Valley Community Foundation helped volunteers with Adam’s House construct a front garden on June 14 that encircles the memorial walkway at the nonprofit grief education center at 241 Coram Ave.

 

Adam’s House Founder and Executive Director Allison Wysota said, “We are thrilled that our front garden surrounding our memorial walkway is now a beautiful, welcoming space that will offer peace and healing not only to grieving children and families that enter our program, but to all in the Shelton community that pass by our doors.”

 

As part of the Adam’s House “Healing Hearts” program, children can create a commemorative brick to place on the memorial walkway to honor and celebrate the life a loved one.

 

The Valley Community Foundation grant funded the plantings and construction of the gardens that encompass the memorial walkway.

 

“Valley Community Foundation (VCF) President and CEO Sharon Closius works closely with our program officer and community grants committee to make smart investments in the changing needs and opportunities of the Valley,” said Alan Tyma, VCF Board Chair. “The Foundation is thrilled to be able to support the mission of the Adam’s House at the maximum level of our community grants, ranging from $250-$2,500. One focus of the Foundation is to strengthen the impact of small nonprofits, those with fewer than two full-time or fewer than four part-time staff, by supporting a variety of community engagement efforts. Based on their presentation, Adam’s House should be a valuable member of our community for a long time.”

 

The Olde Ripton Garden Club in Shelton led by Garden Designer Renee Marsh, owner of A Simpler Place, contributed the project’s landscape design. Twelve volunteers from the Shelton office of Nasdaq made up the labor force that turned Marsh’s landscape design into reality. During a warm, sunny day, the Nasdaq volunteers cheerfully planted a new array of hydrangeas, lilies, catmint, roses, a dogwood tree and other plantings to create the memorial walkway landscaping and front garden.

Holiday Open House Dec. 15

Adam's House in Shelton Seeking Tournament Players

SHELTON – Adam’s House, a newly opened grief education center, is holding its Healing Hearts Paddle Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 1:30 p.m. Finals and Semi-Finals, along with a celebratory dinner and drinks, are hosted at Aspetuck Valley Country Club, 67 Old Redding Road in Weston, CT. Competitive players on 16 Men’s and 16 Women’s teams will also play at the Wilton Y, Weston Field Club and Wilton Riding Club. The deadline to register to play is Nov 9.

 

"Adam's House has had very successful Paddle Tournaments for the past four years, but this year is the first time we've had separate Men's and Women's teams for competitive players," said Allison Wysota, Adam's House founder. "Our Paddle Tournaments always attract enthusiastic players and supporters who have a great time playing, plus enjoying dinner and drinks and the chance to win prizes." 

 

New York Jets vs. Buffalo Bill tickets to the New Year’s Day game at 1:00 p.m. will be raffled off at the dinner, which starts at 5:30 p.m. The winning raffle ticket will walk away with three Club Seats and parking. Another raffle for the New York Giants vs. Detroit Lions game on Dec 18^th at 1:00 p.m., will give the winner two Club Seats and special Club parking. 

 

Adam’s House also will feature an Apple Picking Game, giving supporters a chance to pick an “apple” off the tree and win one of these prizes: wine, free Paddle Lesson, gift certificates for spa treatments, Tennis Spot gift card, gas gift certificates and gear, including vests, golf shirts or baseball caps. 

 

Sponsorships are still available at the Gold level for $3,000; Silver for $1,500; and Bronze for $750. Sponsors will receive a package of tickets, signage and advertisements for their valued support.

 

ENTRY DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 9-Limited to 16 Men’s and 16 Women’s Teams

 

Cost: $180 per team. (Four players are on each team). The cost includes food, drinks and a favor. Players are guaranteed 3 matches (weather permitting). Non-Paddle players are welcome to sign up for the “Dinner Only” option for $50 per person, which includes dinner and drinks, and watching the Semi-Finals, Finals and the Trophy Presentation.

Adam’s House is offering grieving families and children free weekly programs guided by trained facilitators that help parents, teens and children gain new insights for coping with the loss of a parent, grandparent, sibling or friend. Adam’s House has partnered with 15 therapists from Shelton and neighboring communities to help support families before they begin the themed “Healing Hearts” program. Families are currently going through the Adam’s House intake process, the first step to beginning the eight-week Adam’s House™ “Healing Hearts” program.

 

In addition, the Adam’s House “Helping Hearts Heal,” Widow’s Support Group meets monthly here with more than 30 members. Future plans call for the group to include widowers.

Free Cookies and Coffee at Adam's House

SHELTON- Adam’s House, a new grief and loss education center in Shelton, is inviting the community for a “Coffee and Cookies,” tour of the home at 241 Coram Ave. on Wednesday, May 4, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  

 

“If you would like to know more about Adam’s House, please stop by, enjoy some hot coffee and delicious cookies,and take a tour of our wonderful home,” said Adam’s House Founder Allison Wysota. “We would love to share our plans for helping grieving children and their families in Connecticut.”

 

The Adam’s House “Coffee and Cookies” tour is part of The Great Give® 2016 community-wide giving event being held through giveGreater.org® and taking place for 36 hours, starting at 8 a.m. on May 3^rd and ending at 8 pm on May 4^th. The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven is offering the giveGreater.org® service as part of its mission to strengthen nonprofits serving Greater New Haven by advancing knowledge about their work and increasing giving to their organizations.

Adam’s House Grief Education Center Invites Community to Grand Opening Dec. 3rd in Shelton

SHELTON- Adam’s House is holding a Grand Opening Celebration Dec. 3 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Shelton, CT, to introduce the non-profit grief education center at 241 Coram Ave. to community leaders and residents.

 

“After more than three years of fundraising, we are thrilled to be able to open our doors,” said Executive Director and Founder Allison Wysota. “We hope many people will stop by to learn more about our plans to help grieving families and children in Connecticut.”

 

Wysota was inspired to create Adam’s House after her husband, Adam Wysota, died on May 6, 2012, and she sought grief counseling for herself and her three sons. At Adam’s House, grieving families and children will gather together to draw strength and support from their peers. In eight-week programs guided by trained facilitators, parents will gain insights and strategies for dealing with their loss. At the same time, their children will join their own special groups to explore their feelings through art, play and peer-support activities.

 

Wysota encourages Shelton residents to be among the first to take an indoor tour of the charming, newly renovated home designed to offer a warm, comforting setting for families, volunteers and staff. “We are looking to build a community here of trust, healing and encouragement, said Wysota.” With strong community support, Adam’s House hopes to provide a healing place that inspires grieving families to once again, live their lives to the fullest.”

 

Wysota said there are many myths and misconceptions about grief. “For example, the old way of thinking taught bereaved people that when someone dies, he or she ceases to exist and should no longer be discussed at any length. The grieving family member or friend should “get over it,” and stop grieving typically six months after a death, according to society. Wysota said research now teaches that there is no “getting over it,” but that grieving people can establish what is called, ‘continuing bonds,’ ways that the deceased person can have a presence in a grieving loved one’s life. In that way, a mother knows that it is healthy for a son to make a gift to honor a Dad who has died because it’s a way to establish the late Dad’s presence in the boy’s life.”

“I’m very grateful for the hundreds of supporters who have helped realize our first goal of purchasing a beautiful new home in a wonderful location for Adam’s House,” said Wysota. “But we still have more to accomplish before we are ready to deliver our special programs next year to grieving families and children.”

 

Already, volunteers from Alcoa Howmet in Branford, CT, have donated their time and painting skills to help paint the children’s room at Adam’s House The company also provided a grant to fund the children’s program materials. Wysota invites many local companies, schools and individuals to donate their expertise and their time to support Adam’s House. Weston high school students who are members of the National Honors Arts Society volunteered their Sundays to paint beautiful room murals. In addition, Adam’s House future renovations need the fundraising support of companies and individual sponsors.

 

“We have many opportunities for volunteer projects, from day-long tasks to projects that require longer commitments,” said Wysota. “We welcome new friends from the Shelton and neighboring communities to pitch in and help us create a nurturing, supportive environment empowering grieving families to find renewed hope and encouragement in life.”
