Chess, movies, games planned at Derby Library

Teen Summer Reading Club
DERBY - The Derby Public Library Chess Club invites all young adults ages 12 to 17 to “Open Chess Call” from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Mondays in August. All skill levels are welcome.
This program is part of DPL’s 2014 “Spark a Reaction” Teen Summer Reading Club. Registration is requested. 


Tuesday matinees
The Library hosts Tuesday Teen Matinees for patrons ages 12 to 17 from 3-5 p.m. Aug. 5 and 12.  Participants will have an opportunity to vote on the final new-release DVD to be shown for this program, part of DPL’s 2014 “Spark a Reaction” Teen Summer Reading Club.
Light refreshments will be provided. Registration is required.
YA Wednesdays
The Derby Public Library hosts “YA Wednesdays” from 6-7:30 p.m. Aug.  6 and 13.
All young adults ages 12 to 17 are invited to a variety of activities, Teen Game Night combined with Lego Construction Project, and Scrabble Tournament. 

Light refreshments will be provided.

Derby Library plans activities for teens

DERBY - The Derby Public Library Teen Chess Club invites all young adults ages 12 to 17 to meetings from 6:30-7:30 p.m. each Monday in April.
All skill levels are welcome.
Participants will learn how the game is played as well as defensive/offensive strategies.
Julio Maldonado provides superb expertise from a life-long love for the game.
Registration is requested.

Derby Neck Library offers games, history talk, music, more

Ancient games
DERBY - Ancient Games will be offered at 6 p.m. March 4 at Derby Neck Library.

This is a new club that features the lessons and equipment needed to learn some of the earliest of gaming—Mahjong, Chess, Go, Mancala, and Parchisi are featured.

These games will be taught in progression, so that attendees can learn new skills and advance to more strategically skilled games.

No previous experience is needed for you to participate.
Bring a friend and enjoy free instructions.
No registration is required.  

Music and movement
Join Miss Kathi at 6:30 p.m. March 5 for Bedtime Music and Movement. Come in your pajamas and bring a favorite stuffed animal to sing and dance under our indoor stars.
No registration is needed.

Indian Wars talk
At 6:30 p.m. March 6 welcome back Prof. David Koch from Housatonic Community College for another engaging and informative talk on American history.
Join us to learn about Indian Wars in Connecticut.

Koch will describe how these wars affected our earliest state settlers.  His focus will be on the King Philip’s War and the Pequot-Mohegan War, including a fierce battle in Fairfield in 1637 that determined the outcome of the latter tribal conflict.

Bring your questions and comments and engage in a stimulating discussion. No registration is necessary.  Free refreshments.

Writers' Round

Writers’ Round meets twice each month.  Join us at 6:30 p.m.  March 11 for a write-in.  Share a time and space with other authors—we have wi-fi and print capability in the library.
Authors of all genres are invited—poetry, scripts, prose, fiction, and the like.

On March 20 join us once more at 6:30 p.m. for a workshop to share your original works with fellow writers for comments and suggestions. 

Women's Forum
On Mon. March 17 at 12:30 p.m. hosts Women’s Forum, a monthly discussion group that focuses on topics on literature, history, and the arts that are pertinent to women.  This is a luncheon group, so you are invited to bring a light repast.  Free coffee and tea are served.
This month we honor St. Patrick’s Day by discussing Irish poetry, legends, wit, and more.  Bring your ideas. Moderator Patricia Sweeney of the library staff will bring in some relevant materials.

Movie, pizza
All teens and tweens are invited to enjoy the movie “Catching Fire” from the Hunger Games books at 5:30  p.m. March 18.
The film is in high definition blu-ray on a large screen.  Free pizza will also be served.
Bring a friend or two, but remember you must register in advance.

Tech Talks
Tech Talks, a monthly free program, will be held at 10:30 a.m. March 19.  This month we explain how to do scanning and basic photo editing.
You will leave with the knowledge to use a digital scanner and photo editing software allowing you to archive home photos, family documents, and more.  Also, bring your questions for our presenting staffer.

Teen Game Day
From 5-7 p.m. March 27 the library hosts Teen Game Day.  All teens and tweens are invited to enjoy our wi-fi u console and challenge the skills of their friends.
Also available will be board games, dice, and card games—and refreshments. This is a new program that will be recurring in upcoming months. No registration is required.

Crafts, games, music and more planned at Derby Neck Library

DERBY - The Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave. has announced a wide variety of activities for December.

Ancient game of skill
“Go! Club” will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Participants will learn this ancient Chinese game of skill and strategy that predates chess. This program is offered for teens and adults. All game boards and instructions will be provided. 

Music and movement
At 6:30 p.m. Wednesday “Bedtime Music and Movement” will be held with Miss Kathi.
Bring your child to sing and dance.  Wearing pajamas is allowed and a stuffed animal may also attend. 

Dinner and a movie
At 5:30 p.m. Thursday the Library presents “Dinner and a Movie” for those 18 years of age and older. This month’s feature is “The World’s End”, starring Nick Frost.
Free refreshments will be served, including pizza.

Read to a canine
A 3 p.m Sunday therapy dog Grant will be on hand for B.A.R.K. (Be a Reading Kid).  This is a program that allows children to practice reading to a trained dog in a segment of 15 minutes. 

Toddler Bingo
At 11 a.m. Dec. 9  “Toddler Bingo” is slated for pre-schoolers.  Parents or caregivers play along for much fun.

Craft workshops
On Dec. 11 there will be two free craft workshops featuring Origami.
At 4 p.m. children are invited to make an folded paper ornament for the holidays.
At 5:30 p.m. teens and adults are invited to craft their own, more complex paper ornament.
This is a free program that requires registration.
 
Make a Rudolph craft
At 10:30 a.m. Dec. 16 the Library will hold a festive holiday program for children.
Linda Milardo will read “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and lead children in making a Rudolph craft.
There will also be time for singing and dancing to holiday tunes. This free program is best-suited to children ages 2 and older.  Registration requested.

Tech Talks
At 10:30 a.m. Dec. 18  the Library offers “Tech Talks,” a series of informational programs by staff members to teach about new, useful technology.
This month we continue to explain how to maintain your PC, focusing on software, including scanning for viruses and running defrag schedules.  

Games for teens
At 4 p.m. Dec. 18 “Teen Game Day” is planned. All teens and tweens are invited to challenge their friends to a variety of board games, dice games, card games, as well as our new Nintendo  Wii  U video game console.
Free refreshments will be served to attendees. 

Therapy dogs
The Library hosts St. Bernards, Thor and Cosmo, for B.A.R.K. (Be a Reading Kid) at 6 p.m. Dec. 18.
Register your child to read to a trained therapy dog. Sessions are 15 minutes per child.
Learn chocolate making
At 6 p.m., Dec. 19 the “Festive Chocolate at the Library” will be held, featuring Maria Brandriff.  Join us in learning to make your own chocolates and enjoy discovering new delicious dessert recipes.

Brandriff is an accomplished pastry chef and chocolatier, having studied at the University of New Haven and in Arles, France.
Samples will be available for free, and truffle candies will be featured in the presentation.

Derby library plans summer activities for teens

Chess club
DERBY - The Derby Public Library Chess Club invites all young adults ages 12 to 17 to “Open Chess Call” from 6:30-7:30 p.m.  Mondays in August.

This program is part of the Derby Public Library 2013 “Beneath the Surface” Teen Summer Reading Club. Registration is requested.
 
Summer matinees
The Library hosts Teen Summer Movie Matinees for patrons ages 12 to 17 from 1-3 p.m. Tuesdays, Aug. 6 and 13.
Lunch will be provided by the Summer Food Program, which is administered by the Connecticut Department of Education Child Nutrition Unit & the USDA.
Participants will have the opportunity to vote on subsequent film titles to be shown. This program is part of the Derby Public Library 2013 “Beneath the Surface” Teen Summer Reading Club. Registration is required. 

Book discussion
The Library hosts a book discussion series for patrons ages 12 to 17. Participants will meet Aug. 7, at 3:30 p.m. to review Okay For Now by Gary D. Schmidt.
Doug Swieteck sees only the negatives of his move to a new town. Doug’s father & brothers often take their anger out on Doug. Despite Doug’s family problems, he finds his own place in town and discovers his strengths and talents with the help of some unlikely friends.
Copies will be available at the circulation desk while they last and reservations may be made by phone or on-line. Light refreshments will be provided. This program is part of the Derby Public Library 2013 “Beneath the Surface” Teen Summer Reading Club.
 
YA Wednesdays 
The  Library will hosts “YA Wednesdays” from 6-7:30 p.m. Aug. 7 and 14.
All young adults ages 12 to 17 are invited to a variety of activities: Teen Game Night, Lego Construction Project, and a return of last summer’s Battleship Tournament, each offered on sequential Wednesdays.
Light refreshments will be provided.

Derby library to host tie-dye fun, book talk for teens

DERBY - The Derby Public Library invites young adults ages 12 to 17 to Tie-Dye T-Shirts from 3:30 to 5 p.m. July 16.
Laurie Lynn will provide participants new white T-shirts, dyes, and the expertise needed to create a personally designed fashion statement.
This program is part of the Library's 2013 “Beneath the Surface” Summer Reading Club. Space is limited; registration is required.

Book discussion

The Library hosts an ongoing book discussion series for  ages 12 to 17. Participants will meet at 3:30 p.m. July 24 to review Paper Towns by John Green.
One month before graduating from his Central Florida high school, Quentin "Q" Jacobsen basks in the predictable boringness of his life until the beautiful and exciting Margo Roth Spiegelman, Q's neighbor and classmate, takes him on a midnight adventure and then mysteriously disappears.

Summer reading club for teens slated in Derby

DERBY - The Derby Public Library invites young adults ages 12 to 17 to join its 2013 Teen Summer Reading Club running from June 24 through Aug. 15.  
This year’s theme is “Beneath the Surface,” channeling members beyond the superficial through a variety of Library programs and resources. 
Earn credits toward weekly prizes for reading and reviewing books and articles; evaluating websites; and participating in rewarding programs; all while making new friends and exploring beyond the mundane. Every credit earned through the seven-week program will be used for drawing a grand prize winner. 
Registration begins June 3.

DERBY - The Derby Public Library invites all young adults ages 11 to 17 to a LEGO Construction Project from 6-7:30 p.m. May 1.
Participants' creations will be photographed and posted on the Library webpage. Light refreshments will be served.
