DERBY-  The Derby Public will host another popular Water Color Painting Workshop on 

 

February 27 at 6 P.M.  Ages 18 and over are invited to enjoy this fun evening resulting in

 

fabulous art!  Participants will go home with new friends, great memories, and a newly-created

 

masterpiece that will show off your “inner-artist.”  No experience?  No problem!  Local artist,

 

Rich DiCarlo, from the Valley Arts Council, will guide you step-by-step on this creative journey

 

as you learn the ins and outs of creating your own water color painting.  No previous artistic

 

experience necessary – great for beginners or seasoned professionals. Snacks will be provided.  It

 

is promised to be a surprisingly easy and fun way to spend an evening!  Registration is required.

Shelton community to hold art class

SHELTON - In celebration of Earth Day April 22, Crosby Commons Assisted Living Community will be offering a free oil painting class for seniors. 

The class will be held at 2:30 p.m. and will be taught by Janna Oviatt, who holds a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts and has taught for over 10 years.

DERBY - The Derby Public Library invites young adults ages 12 to 17 to a four-session Freestyle Painting Workshop from 4-5:30 p.m. Thursdays in March.

Art's the thing at Derby Senior Center

Oxford resident Dolores Rose works on an oil painting Monday at the Derby Senior Center. She is using a photograph as inspiration. A group of members meets Monday mornings to paint together.

My husband and I attended an opening reception Saturday night at Chartier An Arts Venue,  an experimental multimedia gallery that opened in December at 35 Elizabeth St., Derby.  
It is  next door to the Valley Arts Council's Gallery@37.  
  
The photos and artwork now on exhibit there evoke a variety of emotions. 
Freeman's series of black and white photos, "Me Without You," shows a young woman seemingly lost after a breakup.

Sessa's graphic paintings spotlight the horror of abuse against women. 

Sessa's vibrant oil portrait, "Christine and Katie Mae," immediately caught my eye.

I recommend visiting Chartier An Arts Venue and the Gallery@37 in downtown Derby. 
You won't be disappointed. 

Assisted living association honors Crosby Commons resident

SHELTON - Doris E. Thorn, a resident of Crosby Commons at Wesley Village community, was recently recognized by the Connecticut Assisted Living Association with the first ever "Distinguished Resident Accomplishment Award."
This award is given to a resident who has found meaning and purpose through achieving a goal that brings them fulfillment and benefits others.  
 
At age 82, Thorn joined an oil painting class for residents, having had no experience. 
Her talent blossomed and Doris's paintings have been displayed in a local art gallery and at the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce office in Shelton.

In recent years she had her old record, "Be Still and Know," a collection of hymns she sang, put onto a CD, which is now for sale.
She finished writing a book, "Casting Light on the Mystery of God in You" in December 2011 and it is in the process of being published by Friesen Press.
