Nominate a Veteran for CT Veterans Hall of Fame

Vice-Chair of the legislature’s Veterans Affairs Committee, State Senator George S. Logan is letting the public know that the Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame is seeking nominations for its 2017 hall of fame class.
 
Nominees must be veterans who honorably served in a branch of the military and who have been leaders in a variety of areas, such as arts, education, public service, volunteer activities, and community and business leadership.
 
Anyone can nominate a veteran, and the award also can be given posthumously.
 
Nomination packets and selection criterion can be found on the Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs website under forms, or by going directly to: :http://www.ct.gov/ctva/lib/ctva/halloffame/veterans_hall_of_fame_nomination_packet_2017.pdf
 
All nomination packets must be received by the Office of the Commissioner of Veterans’ Affairs, 287 West Street, Rocky Hill, CT 06067, by 4 p.m. on Sep. 29.
 
Nominations received after Sep. 29 will be automatically considered for the next year.

Hey Valley: Know Any Oustanding Women?

DERBY - The Valley Women's Health Initiative is seeking nominations of area women who have made positive contributions to the community to be honored at its Annual Women Making a Difference in the Valley Tribute.
 
The luncheon and fundraiser will be from noon-2 p.m. on Thurs., Oct. 6 at The Inn at Villa Bianca in Seymour. Over the past 15 years, more than 100 women from various walks of life who live or work in the Naugatuck Valley have been honored at this event.
 
Individuals, business leaders, and organizations are invited to submit nominations. Nominees should exemplify the multi-dimensional role women play in today's society as demonstrated by the contributions they have made to positively affect their community. Nominees must live or work in Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Derby, Naugatuck, Oxford, Seymour, or Shelton.
 
Nomination forms are available on the Valley Women’s Health Initiative page on griffinhealth.org or by emailing Chris Cooper at ccooper1064@yahoo.com. Nominations must be submitted by Mon., Aug. 1.
 
Selected honorees and their nominator will attend the luncheon as guests of the Valley Women's Health Initiative. Reservations are $40 per person and will go on sale in August.

Proceeds are earmarked for the Valley Breast Health Care Fund, a donor-advised fund administered by the Valley Community Foundation.
 
Founded in 1999 with the support and leadership of Griffin Hospital, The Valley Women’s Health Initiative is comprised of members of the community working toward a common goal of improving women’s health and quality of life in the Valley. Its primary goal is to reach out to any person who cannot afford breast cancer screening and diagnostic imaging costs and enable them to receive it.

Nominations Sought For Charles H. Flynn Award

Valley United Way is accepting nominations for the Charles H. Flynn Humanitarian Award. The award, which is the Valley’s oldest and most prestigious award for community service, has been presented annually since 1971 when Alice Russ Cochran of Shelton was named the first winner. The award is restricted to living persons whose service has been to the entire Valley community. Their service must not be limited to just one town or one organization.

The award is named for the late Mr. Flynn, who was, at the time of his death, editor of The Evening Sentinel and had been one of the founders of the Valley United Fund. He had been president of the Ansonia Community Chest. In 1968, he led that organization into a merger with the Derby-Shelton Community Chest and the Seymour United Fund which resulted in the formation of what is now known as the Valley United Way.

A native of Derby, he was an Ansonia resident most of his life and a long time Sentinel employee. He had an abiding interest in the Valley community and served it in myriad ways.  At the time of his death he was first vice-president of the Valley United Fund; president of Catholic Family Services; president of the Ansonia Board of Assessors; director of the Ansonia Public Library and director of the Lower Naugatuck Valley Chapter, American Red Cross.

Following his death in 1969, this award was established because of his life long dedicated service to the entire Valley.

Anyone wishing to nominate someone for the Flynn award may do so by submitting a written resume of that person to the Valley United Way, 54 Grove Street, Shelton or by filling out and submitting an electronic nomination form that can be found on United Way’s website  (http://www.valleyunitedway.org). The award will be presented at United Way's annual dinner meeting in April.

Valley United Way is the leading philanthropic resource for the Valley towns of Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, Seymour and Shelton matching the needs of the community and the interests of donors to improve the quality of life in the community. United Way supports and creates initiatives addressing youth, families and people in crisis. Each year Valley United Way funds programs and organizations that make a measurable difference in the lives of people living and working in the Valley.

Nominations sought for Seymour High alumni awards

SEYMOUR - Seymour High School officials are seeking nominations for the Distinguished Seymour High School Alumnus Award.

Criteria for the award is as follows:

1. Be a Seymour High School graduate.
2. Be out of high school 20 years or more.
3. Distinguished himself/herself as a contributing member to the community/society.
4. Attend and accept the award at the June graduation ceremony.

Griffin Hospital in Derby seeks outstanding women nominees

The Valley Women's Health Initiative is seeking nominations for “outstanding women” who have made positive contributions to the community. 
Award winners will be recognized Oct. 3 at the annual Women Making a Difference in the Valley Tribute Luncheon and Fundraiser at Grassy Hill Lodge in Derby.
 
Over the past 12 years, 84 women from various walks of life who live or work in the Naugatuck Valley have been honored. Individuals, business leaders, and organizations are invited to submit nominations.

Nominees should exemplify the multi-dimensional role women play in today's society as demonstrated by the contributions they have made to positively affect their community. Nominees must live or work in Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Derby, Naugatuck, Oxford, Seymour, or Shelton.

The Valley Women's Health Initiative is a coalition of health agencies, community leaders, and volunteers, from the Valley community working toward the common goal of improving women’s health and addressing women’s health issues, including breast cancer awareness and heart disease. 

Proceeds from the luncheon will be earmarked for the Griffin Hospital/Valley Breast Care Fund, which was established in 2001 to ensure that no person, regardless of age or socio-economic condition, is denied screening mammograms or diagnostic testing for breast cancer.
