'Salamander Search' coming up in Derby

In a release, the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection invites you to celebrate the “Year of the Salamander,” in an event from 3 to 4:30 p.m. April 26 at the Kellogg Environmental Center, Derby.

“Families and individuals are invited to participate in a Salamander Search,”  in the streams and wetlands at Osborndale State Park, the release said.

“Come dressed for the weather and be prepared to get a little muddy. We suggest shoes that tie rather than slip-ons,” the release said.

Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation “proclaimed as the Year of the Salamander to raise awareness for salamander conservation. DEEP is participating in this effort by shining a spotlight on Connecticut’s 12 native salamander species throughout the year. “

“Other state and federal wildlife agencies, along with several conservation organizations, are also partnering with PARC to foster appreciation and understanding of salamanders. The Kellogg Center is hosting this program to help residents become aware of the salamanders in our area and their needs for survival.”

Kellogg Environmental Center is at 500 Hawthorne Av. The program is offered free but donations are accepted.   For information, directions, or to register, call the center at (203) 734-2513 or email donna.kingston@ct.gov

Crisco hails funds for parking lot upgrade at Kellogg Center in Derby

HARTFORD - State Sen. Joseph J. Crisco, Jr., D-Woodbridge, joined Gov. Dannel P. Malloy Friday to announce that $5.76 million to fund road improvements and resurfacing in Connecticut state parks was approved at Friday’s meeting of the State Bond Commission.

Most projects will begin as soon as the weather permits and continue throughout the spring and early summer.
The major projects include resurfacing the parking lot for the Kellogg Environmental Education Center in Derby.

“The Kellogg Environmental Center is a Connecticut treasure that offers hands-on programming, teacher workshops and engaging exhibits for the public to enjoy,” said Crisco. “We should do everything we can to guarantee that visitors have an exceptional experience. I want to thank Governor Malloy for supporting improvements that will help do just that.”

“Connecticut’s state parks and forests are a destination to millions of residents and tourists each year, and roadways in many locations are showing the signs of all of this use,” Malloy said.
“In a year when we are celebrating the centennial of our state park system, it is especially important to make the investments needed to ensure that people can travel safely and conveniently into and around our parks. These projects will also create much needed construction work for Connecticut workers.”

“These bond funds are the latest example of an extraordinary commitment Governor Malloy and the General Assembly have demonstrated toward maintaining and improving the infrastructure in our state parks and forests,” said Department of Energy & Environmental Protection Commissioner Rob Klee.
“These and other previous funds that have been allocated allow us to make improvements that will ensure our parks remain first-class attractions for many years to come.”

As part of DEEP, the Kellogg Environmental Center offers workshops, exhibits, nature activities, and lectures for the general public.
Through hands-on programs, families can enjoy learning about nature and the environment. Throughout the year, the Center offers special weekend programs, nature walks, and family workshops.

Poet to read works at Kellogg Environmental Center in Derby

DERBY - Philanthropist Francis Osborne Kellogg deeded her 350-acre property to the state of Connecticut for a state park, which led to the creation of Osbornedale State Park.

Kellogg, who died in 1956, supported the arts and brought many famous speakers and performers to the Valley during her lifetime.

To help continue the tradition all are invited to celebrate spring and Mother’s Day at a special poetry reading and book signing by Marilyn Nelson at the Kellogg Environmental Center, 500 Hawthorne Ave.

The program will be held at 2 p.m. May 11.

Nelson will open the season with readings from her collection of poems, "Carver: A Life in Poems."

This collection provides young readers with a compelling, lyrical account of the life of revered African-American botanist and inventor George Washington Carver.
Born in 1864 and raised by white slave owners, Carver left home in search of an education and eventually earned a master's degree in agriculture.
Rising to head the Agriculture Department at Tuskegee Institute and known for his studies on sweet potatoes, cow peas and peanuts, Carver provided the world with many products and agricultural innovations.
Nelson tells his story through 44 poems celebrating the man and his accomplishments. She is the author or translator of 15 books and five chapbooks.

Image Journal writes, "American history as conceived by Marilyn Nelson is the inside-out, last-shall-be-first version. She inhabits the voices of the overlooked and disenfranchised and shines light into forgotten corners that reveal essential truths about the whole....But if she is a revisionist historian’s poet, she is also a child’s poet, a mother’s poet, a housekeeper’s poet, and scientist’s poet....It’s this breadth of perspective, from pole to pole, past to present, from spheres domestic to atmospheric, that make her so remarkable. Nelson is also an openhanded citizen of the nation of writers."

Nelson's honors include two NEA creative writing fellowships, the 1990 Connecticut Arts Award, an A.C.L.S. Contemplative Practices Fellowship, the Department of the Army's Commander's Award for Public Service.
In addition, she has received a Fulbright Teaching Fellowship, a fellowship from the J.S. Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, and the Frost Medal—the Poetry Society of America's most prestigious award, for a "distinguished lifetime achievement in poetry."

Nelson is a professor emerita of English at the University of Connecticut. She was (2004-2010) founder/director and host of Soul Mountain Retreat, a small non-profit writers' colony; and held the office of Poet Laureate of the State of Connecticut from 2001-2006.

The staff of the Kellogg Environmental Center is honored to host Nelson.

The program is offered free, but donations are gratefully accepted. Refreshments will be provided.

The Kellogg Environmental Center, operated by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, is open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.

For more information call 203-734-2513.
