Derby Library to host Tech Time, cooking demonstration


          DERBY - The Derby Public Library will hold Tech Time sessions every third Wednesday of
the month at 6:30 p.m. and every third Thursday of the month at 10 a.m. 
          There will be a variety of topics covered on a revolving basis.
           On July 16 and 17 the topic will be Online Job Applications. Areas covered will include the need for cover letters, submission of non-required information, and best ways to follow-up. Ideas for future topics are welcomed.

No reservations are accepted and there is a seven-seat limit per class. 

Cooking demonstration
         DERBY - The Library has scheduled a cooking demo at 6:30 p.m. July 21.
         The topic will be Simple Summer Make-Ahead Meals. 

         Stacey Ference of Savour Catering will show participants how to enjoy all of the summer’s
activities while also serving some great meals. There will be samples of all demonstrated
foods. The class is for ages 18 years and older. Registration is required.

Career Coach to visit Derby Public Library

Learn to create resume 
DERBY - The CT Works Career Coach returns to the Derby Public Library from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. June 20.
During both the morning session, 10 a.m.-noon, and the afternoon session, 1-3 p.m., instructors will offer the class, Create a Great Resume. 
Participants must attend the full session. 
The classes are free and open to the public.

    Both sessions will explain very useful tools that job seekers need today.

    Social Networking has become one of the most popular ways of landing your next “big” job by creating useful connections on-line. These connections make it easier to look for a job on-line through your created network.

 The classes are free and open to the public. Registration is requested but walk-ins will be welcomed on a first come, first served basis.

Derby Public Library to host Career Coach, Tech Time


    DERBY - The CT Works Career Coach returns to the Derby Public Library from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 17.

    During both the morning session, 10 a.m.-noon, and the afternoon session, 1-3 p.m., instructors will offer Job Search Assistance.

   Learn where to look for jobs, how to get the job you want, and how to search for jobs on the Internet.

   The workshop is free and open to the public.

Tech Time sessions

    The Derby Public Library will hold Tech Time sessions at 6:30 p.m. every third Wednesday of

On Jan. 15 and 16 the topic will be e-Books and Audio Books.

Participants are invited to bring their Kindles, Nooks, tablets, iPhones, androids and other media devices as the Tech Librarian guides them through the process of downloading free books from the Library catalog.

The intent is to help patrons keep up with the ever-changing world of technology.

Ideas for future topics are welcomed.

No reservations are accepted; there is a seven-seat limit per class.

Yesterday's Headlines

The Derby Public Library welcomes Rob Novak, Jr., local historian, at 6:30 p.m. March 19 to discuss Yesterday’s Headlines.
 Novak has specialized in presenting local history in fun, interactive formats for both general and specialized audiences for more than 20 years.
He is past director of the Derby Historical Society and City of Shelton’s Municipal Historian.  In addition, Novak has authored four books through Arcadia Publications, and has been a popular historical columnist.
Participants will be taken back to 1913, 1938, and 1963 to see what was happening 100, 75, and 50 years ago in the Valley.

Library offers wide range of programs

It’s magic!

    The library invites adults 18 and over to an Evening of Magic at 6:30 p.m. June 18. Local magician Bryan Lizotte will amaze and astound his audience with a combination of both close-up and stand-up magic tricks.
     This is a great opportunity to rediscover the child in you.  This program is part of the series, Monday Evening Escapes and Escapades, being offered every Monday throughout the summer.  Registration is requested.
     All 2012 Library summer programming is being made possible through the
 generous sponsorship of the Jane C. and David B. Cohen Fund through the Valley
 Community Foundation , in memory of David B. Cohen.
      
Basic computing class

 
     The library continues to offer free monthly walk-in basic computer classes.  They are held on the third Tuesday of each month at 10 a.m. and the third Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m.
    This introductory 90-minute class, taught by library staff, covers computer hardware, Windows, basic word processing and Internet searching.
     No reservations are accepted and there is a seven seat limit per class.  June class dates are 10 a.m. June 19 and 6:30 p.m. June 20.

 Free career workshops

     The library continues to host free career development workshops presented by the Connecticut Department of Labor.
     From 10 a.m.- noon June 20, the topic will be “10 Things Every Job Seeker Should Know.” The presentation will include discussion of job search myths, facts, and keys to success.
