Walk, Run & Jog for a Good Cause
Calling all walkers, runners, and joggers!Every year supporters of Spooner House gather together to walk the Derby Greenway in support of the hunger and homeless initiatives at Spooner House.
Join us this year on May 20th for our 20th year of this tradition!
You can choose to form your own team, join a team, or register as an individual.
Registration is $20.
Once registered, participants can set up their own fundraising pages.
The first 200 people to register will receive an event t-shirt and goodie bag.
All participants will be entered into a drawing to win prizes.

By joining the Walk for the Hungry and Homeless you are supporting your neighbors in need in the Lower Naugatuck Valley receive food, shelter and support services with the goal of establishing a self-sufficient living situation.

Blumenthal, DeLauro seek heritage designation for the Naugatuck River Valley

Boosting the local economy, creating jobs and becoming a hub for historical and cultural tourism are some of the perks that could come along with proposed legislation unveiled by U.S. Rep. Rosa L. DeLauro and U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal Wednesday.
The two legislators gathered before a small crowd of local officials at the entrance of the Derby Greenway announcing creation of the Naugatuck River Valley National Heritage Area Study Act, which if approved, would designate the area a National Heritage Area.

17th annual walk in Derby raises $9,260 for Spooner House

DERBY - A recent walk along the Derby Greenway raised more than $9,260 for the hungry and homeless at Spooner House, at 30 Todd Road, Shelton.
Nearly 100 people enjoyed the great weather and scenery along the Naugatuck River while helping to raise money for the services provided by Area Congregations Together, Inc.

Spooner House
staff thanks those who supported the 17th annual Walk for the Hungry and
Homeless. Walkers and their
supporters combined raised $1,767, while corporate
sponsors contributed a total of $7,500, including in-kind support.
This
year's sponsors included platinum

Spooner House to hold walk in Derby for homeless and hungry
17th annual event is rain or shine
DERBY - Spooner House invites willing walkers and runners to the Derby Greenway May 17 starting at 9 a.m. (rain or shine) to take part in the 17th annual Walk for the Hungry and Homeless.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and walkers may begin whenever they arrive.
Participants are asked to make donations in any amount that fits their budget, ask others to sponsor them for additional funds, and seek matching donations from employers.
However, a minimum $20 donation will be required for each participant to receive the commemorative walk T-shirt.
All proceeds benefit Spooner House.
The entire walk route is 3.4 miles,
but participants
may travel any distance they choose and water will be provided
at the halfway
point along the 1.7 mile Greenway.
The Derby Greenway provides a safe, vehicle-free route with great scenery along the Naugatuck River.
Strollers are welcome, and participants are asked to use the Division Street entrance and park in BJ's lot.

Club to hold annual 5K at Derby Greenway
DERBY - The
Boys & Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley will hold its annual
Herbie Rollinson Memorial 5K Run-Walk June 29 at the Derby Greenway.
Sponsored by the Exchange Club of Shelton, the 5K is a community event for all Valley residents.

Registration is all online; go to www.BGC-LNV.org and click the 5K link at the top of the page. The event is open to children and adults. Start time is 9 a.m. for the 5K and 9:30 a.m. for walkers.
Cost is $25 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under. Closing date is June 6 or upon reaching 300 participants, whichever comes first.
Register by June 6 to be guaranteed a commemorative T-shirt.
The route will begin at the Caroline Street end of the Greenway. Parking will be at Factory Street and Hallock Court (behind St. Anthony’s Book & Gift Shop, across from Calvert Safe & Lock).
Proceeds from the Herbie Rollinson 5K will support programs at our Raymond P. Lavietes Clubhouse in Shelton and Joel E. Smilow Clubhouse in Ansonia, as well as our satellite programs at Elizabeth Shelton and Perry Hill schools in Shelton and at the Seymour Recreation Center in Seymour.
For more than 65 years the Boys & Girls Club has been a positive alternative for youth. But the Club is so much more than just a place to hang out after school.
When children walk through the doors, they are exposed to a team committed to their success and programming designed to help them succeed in school and in life.

Derby Historical Society slates Legends by Lantern tours
DERBY - The Derby Historical Society will host a return of its Legends by Lantern tours on Oct. 18 and 19 on the Derby Greenway.
Tours begin at 6:30 and 8 p.m.
Please arrive at the partking lot on O'Sullivan's Island 15 minutes prior to the start of the tour.
Reservations are required; tour sizes are limited.

Greenway plaque dedicated in Derby on Derby Day
DERBY - Officials Saturday unveiled a bronze plaque from the Department of the Interior at the Division Street entrance to the Derby Greenway recreational trail.
The plaque says the Naugatuck River Trail is part of President Obama's America's Great Outdoors Program.
The trail will eventually be built in 11 communities along the Naugatuck River.

The plaque is located near the Derby Hall of Fame Plaza. Three members of the Derby Hall of Fame were recognized at the ceremony with memorial bricks added to the plaza.
They were: Horace Weston, known as the world’s greatest banjo player, James Bassett Atwater, a prominent business leader, twice mayor of Derby and president of the Derby public library; and Stephen Whitney, who built the New York Stock Exchanges and was a founder of New York University.
Saturday was also Derby Day, an annual downtown festival held on Elizabeth Street and the Green.

Derby walk raises more than $10K for Spooner House
DERBY - The Spooner House walk last Saturday at the
Derby Greenway earned more than $10,250 for hungry and homeless in their care. More than 100 people participated in the walk this year.
Spooner House thanks those who supported the 16th annual
Walk for the Hungry and Homeless including the
walkers and their supporters, along with the corporate sponsors.
Sponsors included Valley Community Foundation, AD-MERICA and Employment
Options, LLC, Adams Hometown Markets, Aquarion Water
Co., Calvert Safe and Lock, Gary’s East Coast Service, First Church
of Christ in Woodbridge, Tuttle Insurance Group, Pepe Realty, Unilever,
Webster Bank, Data Tel, OEM Controls, Naugatuck Valley Savings and
Loan, Staley Robeson and R.D. Scinto, Inc.
A
variety of in-kind contributions were received from the Brookside Inn
Restaurant,
Griffin Hospital and Liquid Lunch.
Non-profit
Area Congregations Together, Inc. was formed in 1979 to help fill
gaps in the Naugatuck Valley’s social service network.
Today, Spooner House is operated by ACT and devoted to helping
clients establish self-sufficiency in an atmosphere of respect and
