Diabetes Support Group to Discuss Low Vision

DERBY - The Diabetes Education & Support Group at Griffin Hospital will host two free presentation about low vision on Tues., Nov. 14 at 2:30 p.m. and 6: 30 p.m. at the hospital, 130 Division St., Derby.
 
Leslie Prescott and Fran Harmeyer, occupational therapists from Griffin Hospital Rehabilitation Services and the Lions Low Vision Center at Griffin Hospital, will present “Diabetes and Low Vision Occupational Therapy.”
 
Low vision is a chronic medical condition affecting 1 in 6 adults over 45 years of age usually caused by macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma. Occupational therapy teaches persons with visual impairment to safely and independently complete the daily living tasks, and the Lions Low Vision Center offers adaptive devices free of charge.
 
The presentations will be in the hospital’s Childbirth Education Classroom A. There will be free valet parking for the 2:30 p.m. session.
 
The Diabetes Education & Support Group meets September - June on the second Tuesday of each month to discuss the management of diabetes, its challenges, and day-to-day dietary concerns. Individuals with diabetes and their caregivers are welcome to attend.

Griffin Hospital Hosts Open House for New Lions Low Vision Center April 1

DERBY- Griffin Hospital and Lions Club of Fairfield and New Haven Counties will host an open house for the new Lions Low Vision Center at Griffin Hospital Rehabilitation Services on Fri., April 1 from 4-5:30 p.m. at the Hewitt Ambulatory Pavilion, 350 Seymour Ave. in Derby.
 
The Low Vision Center assists individuals whose degree of vision loss can no longer be corrected by eye glasses, medicine or surgery. Occupational therapists at the Center evaluate an individual’s degree of vision loss and make recommendations for vision aids and devices that are provided at no charge. The open house will feature a short program by Dr. Joseph Sokol, of Connecticut Eye Specialists in Shelton, Griffin Hospital occupational therapists, and Lions Club members. There will be demonstrations of the adaptive equipment and time to speak with low vision experts.

Shelton facility hosts low-vision support group

SHELTON - Do you or someone you know struggle with the difficulties of low vision?
Join us for the next meeting of our low vision support group.



Learn to See the World is scheduled for 3 p.m. Aug. 20 at Crosby Commons Assisted Living Community on the Wesley Village Campus, 580 Long Hill Ave. 
The meeting will be held in the Library on the first floor.

Mark Leventhal, a member of the Board of Directors of the Blind Veterans Association, Connecticut Regional Group, will speak at the meeting. He will discuss the challenges of the summer season.

The meeting is free and open to the public.  

Individuals with low vision or who are legally blind are encouraged to attend for fellowship and support.

Low vision support group to learn coping strategies in Shelton

SHELTON - The next meeting of the low vision support group in Shelton - Learn to See the World - will be held at 3 p.m. April 24 in the Gallery at Crosby Commons at Wesley Village, 580 Long Hill Ave..

Guest speaker will be Charlie Collins, owner/founder of Vision Dynamics.
Legally blind from the age of 13, Collins will share his story, struggles, and success.  He will also demonstrate strategies and products to assist with tasks such as reading prescription bottles, crossword puzzles, playing cards, writing checks and reading menus.

The meeting is free and open to the public.

Individuals with low vision or are legally blind are encouraged to attend for fellowship and support.
