Book discussion group exercises the mind and body along Riverwalk in Shelton

SHELTON >> Written Words Bookstore has introduced a book discussion group that exercises the mind and body: WALK, TALK, RIVERWALK!

After reading pre-selected short fiction works, the group will meet on Saturday at 8:30 a.m (starting on July 11) at the Veteran’s Memorial Park in downtown Shelton. Discussion will take place while members walk along the scenic Riverwalk. Approximate walk time is a half hour.

“We love being downtown and the Riverwalk is practically right outside our door.” said Written Words Bookstore owner Dorothy Sim-Broder in a press release. “What a great way to take advantage of the beautiful outdoor setting while exercising your brains cells! We all have busy schedules nowadays, so we’ve designed this to make it accessible: We’re reading short stories which do not take long, you get to exercise your mind and body at the same time, it’s early enough so you’ll still have a whole day ahead of you after the discussion, and as a bonus: the Farmer’s Market will be right there so you could pick up fresh produce on the way out!”

Discussion is free and open to the public. Interested parties are encouraged to support the bookstore by purchasing discussion books at Written Words, which are usually available at a special book club 15 percent discount.

The information above was provided in a release from Written Words Bookstore. Written Words Bookstore is located inside the Conti building at 415 Howe Ave. For more information, call the bookstore at 203-944-0400.

ANSONIA >> Mayor David Cassetti announced Thursday that the city has secured $400,000 in funding to extend the popular Ansonia Riverwalk on Division Street.
The money is coming from the Federal Highway Administration, which will provide 80 percent, or $320,000, of the grant funding, while the city kicks in a local share of 20 percent, or $80,000.
Cassetti said the project, dubbed Segment 8 of the Riverwalk, will include construction of an additional 500 feet of paved multi-use trail atop the western flood control dike. It will also include construction of a 130-foot pedestrian bridge over the Metro-North railroad.

Rotarians plan event in new pavilion at Shelton Riverwalk

SHELTON - The Derby-Shelton Rotary Club is planning its first event at the newly created Derby-Shelton Rotary Pavilion on Canal Street.
Tickets are $30 a person and include German food, music, beer and wine.
They are available at TD Bank, Webster Bank, Jeff’s Appliance, Marks of Design and Smoke ‘n’ Bones BBQ.
The Derby-Shelton Rotary Pavilion (designed by Tate Associates) is a project that began in August 2008 when the very first Steak and Lobster Bake was held on the Riverwalk.
This event marked the beginning of a three-year fund raising campaign for the Pavilion.
The Derby-Shelton Pavilion is about building community, not just building a facility. This vibrant hub of our community will be dedicated to the memory of Richard O. Belden. It will be a destination where the community can meet, relax, learn and have fun together, providing diverse opportunities for new experiences and friendships.
Building the Pavilion on the Shelton Riverfront is a cooperative effort of the on Rotary Club, the City of Shelton, private donors and supporters.
Plan to join the Derby-Shelton Rotarians from 2-6 p.m. Sept. 16 (rain or shine).
For information contact Al Patuzzi at 203-929-3442. Visit www.derby-sheltonrotary.org to learn more.

Shelton Relay for Life hits home

Survivors walk a first lap Saturday at American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.

I attended the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life at the Shelton Riverwalk Saturday, but not to write a story about the event.
Instead, as a newly-minted breast cancer survivor, I had been invited to a survivors' reception for the second year in a row.

My husband and I had enjoyed ourselves last year, and knew we wanted to return this year. When we got there we bumped into some friends and neighbors, which made up for getting drenched as we made our way from our mini-van to the reception inside the Farmer's Market.

After lunch the pouring rain miraculously stopped and the sun peeked out from behind some glorious, fluffy clouds just in time for the opening ceremony.

The survivors' first lap around the track at the Shelton Riverwalk was led by a color guard from Echo Hose, Hook & Ladder Co. 1 from Shelton.

American flag flies from Echo Hose, Hook & Ladder Co. 1 truck high above the event.

I commend all those folks who organized the Relay for Life, formed teams and walked many laps yesterday and into this morning to raise funds and awareness for a worthy cause.
