Osborne Homestead Celebrates Centennial Wedding Anniversary

DERBY- In honor of the 100th wedding anniversary of Frances Eliza Osborne and Waldo Kellogg, the Osborne Homestead Museum will have a special exhibition of wedding pictures taken at the Kellogg Estate gardens and Osbornedale State Park.

Its gardens and grounds have in the past and continue to provide an ideal and affordable destination for wedding photography. For the entire month of October, visit the museum and view wedding photos from the 1970s to the present day. 

Frances Eliza Osborne and Waldo Stewart Kellogg married October 21, 1919 at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Derby.  As Frances wrote to her mother, their love was as strong as “Romeo & Juliette or any of the storybook lovers,” and their marriage was one of equal partnership.  Frances was already a successful business woman and community leader when she met Waldo, an architect who supervised the design of the Veteran’s Hospital in West Haven.  They ran Osbornedale Farm, at what is now Osbornedale State Park, and contributed to the design of the museum.  

This special wedding exhibition will recognize and honor the couples who have had their wedding photos taken in the state park. About eighteen wedding couples’ photos will be featured in the museum.  You might even see the wedding pictures of your relatives, friends, and neighbors!  Along with their photographs, there will be a display of bridal gloves, wedding accessories, and the Kellogg’s wedding gifts.  Wedding stories and legends will also be featured.  

Get inspired, learn about wedding legends, and celebrate Frances and Waldo’s, other “Kellogg” couples’, and your wedding anniversaries at the Osborne Homestead Museum throughout the month of October.  

The Osborne Homestead Museum, a facility of the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, is open for free guided tours on Thursdays and Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Sundays from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  It is located at 500 Hawthorne Avenue off of Rte. 34 in Derby.  For additional information email susan.d.robinson@ct.gov or call 203-734-2513.

Seymour students learn safety, storytelling, cancer awareness

Bungay School shares October events

SEYMOUR - Members of Great Hill Hose Company visited students in kindergarten through Grade 3 earlier this month at Bungay Elementary School.
The children learned valuable facts about smoke detectors, dialing 9-1-1, and stop, drop, and roll.  
The firemen also showed the children their “gear” that they wear while working at a fire, and explained that they should not be alarmed by the firefighters’ appearance in the event of a fire.  
The favorite part of the presentation was going outdoors and seeing a real fire truck.

Thank you to the Great Hill Hose Company and all the volunteer firemen for bringing this helpful program to our students.

Author Eshu Bumpus, pictured above, joined third graders to share entertaining folktales with them.
After his storytelling, he visited each of the four classrooms to help the students plan their very own interdiction stories. 
In the stories, they are the main characters with a special talent that will get them out of their problem. They received stickers that will help them map out their settings in future sessions.

Students and staff celebrated Seymour Pink, Inc. in support of breast cancer awareness.  It was a wonderful sight to see everyone dressed in pink, (there even was some pink hair), while endorsing this very special event. 
Even the school was decorated to match the upbeat mood to help eradicate this disease. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Griffin marks patient-centered care awareness

Theme of month is 'Building Patient Confidence' 

DERBY - Griffin Hospital joins Planetree, as well as hospitals and health care organizations around the world this October to commemorate the sixth annual Patient-Centered Care Awareness Month.

This year’s theme, “Building Patient Confidence,” and butterfly icon represents the significant organizational culture change and transformation to patient-centered care.
Ultimately when patients report they feel they are being treated with dignity, respect and compassion, when families express gratitude for being treated as full partners in care, and when health care providers are prideful of their work, the rewards are vibrant and uplifting.


“Patient-centered health care organizations build patient confidence by supporting patients, their loved ones and the team of health care providers to all be on the same page in understanding the patient’s health and health care needs. Confidence comes from being able to control and manage your health, which includes communication with providers about health history, current needs and future plans. Additionally, patients are encouraged to identify a care partner who understands the diagnosis, coordinates care and serves as an advocate,” said Planetree President Susan B. Frampton, Ph.D.


Patient-Centered Care Awareness Month is sponsored and coordinated by Planetree, a global, not-for-profit organization raising the standard of personalized healthcare by coaching organizations to inspire and enable their caregivers to transform the healthcare experience they provide.

Griffin Hospital has been actively engaged in implementing the Planetree model for the past 20 years, focusing on individualized care and providing meaningful opportunities to activate patients and families, such as care partner programs, patient advisory councils, bedside shift reports, and open medical records.

“As the flagship hospital for Planetree, Griffin Hospital has received national recognition for creating a facility and approach to patient care that is responsive to the needs of patients,” said Patrick Charmel, Griffin Hospital President and CEO.
“As a result, hundreds of healthcare facilities around the world have sent teams of caregivers to visit Griffin Hospital and now incorporate the Planetree concepts they observe into their healthcare models.”

Several activities are planned to increase awareness about the patient-centered model of care, empower patients and inspire health-care organizations to further advance and expand the practice.

The month’s activities include:

• The 2012 Planetree Annual Conference Sept. 30-Oct. 3 in Palm Desert, Calif.

•  The recognition of individual health care professionals for their personal embodiment of the values of patient-centered care at the annual Spirit of Planetree Awards Oct. 3 concluding the  2012 Planetree Annual Conference, including Radiation Oncologist Laura Howell of West Hartford.
• U.S. governors are commemorating the event by signing proclamations recognizing Patient-Centered Care Awareness Month in their states.

        • Hospitals are coordinating a variety of events as well as distributing “I Am an Expert About Me” stickers to patients, and staff members are wearing “I Am Listening” stickers.
         • The Planetree website, www.planetree.org, features a variety of free videos, resources and tool kits, including information about Same Page Transitions, for patients and caregivers under the resources section.
