Shelton farm slates UNICEF festival for kids

27th annual event to be held this weekend

SHELTON - Families dressed in costume are invited to Jones Family Farms’ annual UNICEF Family Festival from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at their Pumpkinseed Hill farm, 120 Beardsley Road.

Games and crafts for kids will help raise money for UNICEF.

Activities (Proceeds directly to UNICEF) include:
Temporary Tattoos
Bean Bag Toss
Fortune Telling
Gourd Creature Making
Button Making

This year marks the 27th anniversary of the Jones' family selling pumpkins at their Pumpkinseed Hill farm at 120 Beardsley Road. Over the years, they have been able to donate more than $100,000 to UNICEF thanks to this yearly festival.

Guests to the pumpkin fields will join farmers in celebrating one of our favorite pumpkin themes: The World of OZ! You may even see some of your favorite characters working in the pumpkin patch that weekend!

Entertainment will take place on the Munchkin-land stage and includes a musical performance from Shelton’s Center Stage Theater Teen Cabaret at 2 p.m. Saturday. Also, pig and chicken feeding demonstrations and story-times will be held throughout both days.

As usual, guests will be able to choose from more than 50 varieties of pumpkins, squash and gourds grown on the Jones farm.

The hayrides will be running and weather permitting the corn maze will be open too.

The ever-popular All-You-Can-Carry special is also in place. Guests will pay only $33 for all the pumpkins they can carry across the finish line. This year, the Jones Farmers have included white pumpkins, specialty pumpkins and even their eye-catching GIANT pumpkins in the deal. It’s always fun to stand by the line and cheer on the strong men and women at the pumpkin patch.

Jones Family Farms is open daily through Halloween, 10 a.m.- 5:30 p.m.; 4 p.m. close on Halloween.

Jones Winery is open 11 a.m. -5 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Ansonia Nature Center plans Autumnfest

Event will feature 'haunted trail,' hay bale maze

ANSONIA - Pumpkin carving, horse-drawn wagon rides and a hay bale maze will be some of the highlights of an annual fall fest sponsored by the Friends of the Ansonia Nature Center, Inc.

The event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Center, 10 Deerfield Road. Admission is free.

This year, visitors will once again get a chance to enjoy horse-drawn wagon rides provided by Maple View Farm in Orange.
As the horses clip-clop over hill and meadow, riders will learn the history of the park and perhaps hear a scary story or two.

Visitors may follow a "haunted trail" created by the Junior Rangers and try to make their way through a hay bale maze.

Carve a pumpkin, and visit the nature center store where the youngest family members will be able to decorate a pumpkin with no carving or scissors provided.

Learn about the animals associated with All Hallows Eve, through a program on bats, owls, and tarantulas.

The Friends will hold a tag sale and a bake sale, featuring homemade apple and pumpkin goodies to take home.

Enjoy fresh-squeezed apple cider and cinnamon doughnuts. Ranger Marty Wigglesworth is planning to hold his popular doughnut-eating contest.

All proceeds from the celebration will benefit the center's educational programs and wildlife rehabilitation.

Ansonia getting ready for 9th annual Harvest Festival

Vendors sought for Oct. 6 event

ANSONIA - It may still be summer, but members of the Cultural Commission are busy preparing for an onslaught of scarecrows, pumpkins, hay bales, mums, and more on Main Street.

That's because the city's Harvest Festival is only a month away.
The ninth annual event will be held from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. Oct. 6 along Main Street. Rain date is Oct. 13.
There will be a lot of new arts and crafts vendors along with the "old reliables" who have participated since the festival began, Cultural Commission chairwoman Judy Nicolari said.

"This year we've added a new attraction featuring Chris Clark who will be showing  the audiences fantastic stunts on his bicycle," she said. "It's an act not to be missed."
The time and location for Clark's performance will be announced at a later date, Nicolari said.

A scarecrow-making contest will also be held. The contest is open to all who register their scarecrows with the Valley Arts Council at its booth, Nicolari said. Winners will be based on workmanship and skill effort.

There will be a pumpkin-carving contest held in the Ansonia school system. Participants are asked to bring their carved pumpkins to Veterans Park next to City Hall by 12:30 p.m. at the latest for judging by the Valley Arts Council.

There also will be music performances on two stages throughout the day.  Programs will be available at the festival listing the scheduled times for all the performances.

Car show, chalk art

A classic car show will take place on Bridge Street, and amusement rides will be set up behind the River Valley Baptist Church.
A free moon walk bounce for kids will be provided by TEAM, Inc. throughout the day.
A chalk drawing event, which was very popular last year, will again be held on Water Street. Chalk will be provided.

Anyone interested in signing up as a vendor may visit www.cityofansonia.com or contact Nicolari, 203-732-1040, or Cultural Commission member Mary Gibson, 203-734-2484.
