Adopt a child for back to school

Too often, families who have recently escaped abuse or are currently living with abuse, struggle to make ends meet and provide for their children. 
Many wear shoes that are worn, clothing that is too small, pants that are tight or too short, or hand-me-downs that don't fit the child's interest or personality. 

Through the BHcare Back-to-School "Adopt a Child" Program, you can help these children start school on a positive note. 

• Adopt a child by providing a head-to-toe outfit, coat and backpack filled with school supplies.
• Purchase gift cards.
• Make a monetary donation in any amount which will be used to purchase clothing, school supplies and other needed items for a child.

To participate in the program, contact Marcia Jones at mjones@bhcare.org or 203-736-2601 x327 to receive, "Adoption Papers."
Complete and return the papers to the address indicated on the form. Once your paperwork is received, your "adopted" child's sizes and other pertinent information will be mailed to you, and arrangements will be made for you to deliver your gifts.

Bike night to raise funds for hospital

DERBY - Resident Dick Lupkas said Monday's bi-weekly bike night from 6-9 p.m. at the Valley Diner,  636 New Haven Ave. will be a benefit.
Proceeds from the event will go to the Shriner's Children's Hospital, he said.

Lupkas also said many local restaurants, stores, and motorcycle shops have donated items for  raffles.

Trophies will be awarded.

Ice cream 101: An occasional series just for fun

SHELTON - Friday afternoon was so hot my son and I opted for some Italian ice instead of ice cream.
Yes, I finally made it to Addeo’s Italian Ice at 97 Center St. in Shelton.

In keeping with the theme I can sum up our visit it one word: delicioso.

A perfect treat to beat the heat

I chose the almond flavor (the white on the right)  and it was wonderful, but not before I took a sample of the cheesecake-flavored ice. It was equally tasty.


Cameron enjoyed a combo cup of blackberry and watermelon. Refreshing was how he described them both. 


We sat outside at one of two tables in front of the shop and enjoyed. There is also indoor seating in air-conditioned comfort.


My colleague Jean Falbo-Sosnovich and I mentioned Addeo's in our recent story about summer fun in the Valley. A Shelton resident she interviewed raved about Addeo's, and I knew that I just had to go there.

All-class reunions on tap in Derby

         DERBY - The 13^th Annual Derby All-Class Reunions will be held Sept. 1, the Saturday of Labor Day weekend.
        Originally conceived by the Derby Cultural Commission it has been growing ever since.  

         Classes 1970 and earlier can meet at the Derby Elks Lodge and 1980 forward can meet at Archie Moore’s. Both are located on Elizabeth Street but everyone is welcome to “move about the city.” Suggested meeting time is 7 p.m. but all are welcome downtown earlier to socialize, have dinner, enjoy the artwork at Gallery@37, 37 Elizabeth St., or maybe take a dance lesson (call ahead). 

          This was not meant to take the place of each class’ own reunion but if a class is not having one then the chance a person going out that (same) night each year and knowing someone increases.

Disabilities topic of talk in Shelton

SHELTON  - The next meeting of the low vision support group in Shelton - Learn to See
the World - will be held at 2 p.m. Aug. 27 at Crosby Commons at Wesley Village, 580 Long Hill Ave. The meeting in the second floor Nautical Lounge is free and open to the public.

Speaker will be Mark Leventhal, a member of the Board of Directors of the Blind Veterans Association, Connecticut Regional Group, will present "Coping with Disabilities."

Individuals with low vision or are legally blind are encouraged to attend for fellowship and support.

Ansonia church to host health fair

ANSONIA - Free health screenings and programs on how to stay healthy and safe highlight the 7th Annual Community Health Fair to be held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Clinton A.M.E. Zion Church, 96 Central St.
Attendees can receive free health screenings for stroke assessments (including cholesterol), blood pressure and diabetic screenings.
In addition, the fair will feature the Child Identification Program (CHIP), health and wellness displays and interactive health education booths.

The event is sponsored by Griffin Hospital’s Valley Parish Nurse Program, Valley NAACP and The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven Neighborhood Small Grants.
