Career coach plans return to library

DERBY - The CT Works Career Coach returns to Derby Public Library from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 15. 
During both the morning session, 10 a.m.-noon, and the afternoon session, 1-3 p.m., instructors will be offering Job Search Assistance.
Learn where to look for jobs, how to get the job you want, and how to search for jobs on the Internet.
The workshop is free and open to the public.  Registration is requested but walk-ins will be welcomed on a first come first served basis.

Shelton troupe to present 'Big River'

A celebration of Americana 
 
SHELTON - Center Stage Theatre, in the former Lafayette School, 54 Grove St., will present "Big River, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" for 10 performances. 

The show is directed by Gary Scarpa, with music by the late Roger Miller (King of the Road). It features Derby natives Ali Dunne, Marc Garofalo, and Travis Pyka.

A classic American musical, Big River won seven Tony Awards in 1985, including Best Musical, and then the 2003 Broadway revival of Big River won a special Tony for "Excellence in Theatre."

Mark Twain's timeless classic sweeps us down the mighty Mississippi as the irrepressible Huck Finn helps his friend Jim, a slave, escape to freedom at the mouth of the Ohio River. 

Their adventures along the way are hilarious, suspenseful and heartwarming, bringing to life your favorite characters from the novel - the Widow Douglas and her stern sister, Miss Watson; the uproarious King and Duke, who may or may not be as harmless as they seem; Huck's partner in crime, Tom Sawyer, and their rowdy gang of pals; Huck's drunken father, the sinister Pap Finn; the lovely Mary Jane Wilkes and her trusting family. 

Propelled by an award-winning score from Roger Miller, the king of country music, this jaunty journey provides a brilliantly theatrical celebration of pure Americana.

Troop 3 Scouts taking Super Bowl sub orders

DERBY - Members of Boy Scout Troop 3 are accepting orders for one-foot and five-foot party sub sandwiches as part of their annual Super Bowl Sub Sale fundraiser.  

The subs are made to order and home-delivered anywhere in the Lower Naugatuck Valley on Feb. 3. 

All orders must be received by Jan 30. Order forms are available at www.troop3derby.org. 

One-foot subs are $6.50 each and the five-foot, double-wide party subs are $65. 
Proceeds from the sale will help the scouts attend Edmund D. Strang Scout Reservation summer camp and the 2013 National Scout Jamboree.

LETTER: TEAM toy drive Valley's best yet

* I read this letter to the editor in the newspaper and thought I'd re-post it here. 

Congratulations to TEAM on its successful toy drive to benefit needy children in the Valley.



During 2012, TEAM’s Toys 4 Kids provided more than 3,000 toys for 1,486 children of 771 families, and. in addition. distributed more than 200 bicycles donated by the employees and customers of Neopost USA.

Individuals dropped off toy donations in collection boxes at 127 sites in a variety of businesses and municipal locations. Volunteers picked up toys and delivered them to our “toy store” on Main Street in Ansonia. Other volunteers set up the toy store, sorted the toys and organized them by age and gender.

In all, hundreds of volunteers and kind-hearted Valley residents throughout the Valley helped make Toys 4 Kids a success for underprivileged children.

Thank you to all who made the 2012 toy drive the best the Valley has experienced to date.

Beccaroni! to aid Shelton child facing surgery

Rebecca

Rebecca Rose Marcinauskis of Shelton, at 8-years old, has endured more hospitalizations and serious illnesses than most 80-year olds.

As her mother, Laura Marcinauskis says, Rebecca is "feisty," and she believes that's why her daughter has made it to eight years of age.

I met Rebecca two years ago, and I found her to be not only feisty, but sociable and full of energy.  

Rebecca will soon undergo brain surgery.

Beccaroni!, a pasta dinner, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 18 at St. Margaret-Mary Church hall, 382 Long Hill Ave., Shelton, with proceeds going to help defray the family's increasing medical costs. 

Donation is $10 a person. If you cannot attend, consider making a donation to this worthy cause.

I had no idea. My daughter is in Rebecca's class at school. We will not be able to make the dinner, but will definitely make a donation. Heartfelt thoughts and prayers to The Beccaroni family.
