First day goes smoothly at Derby schools

DERBY — It may have been a day later than scheduled but the first day of school for students at Bradley and Irving schools and Derby Middle School went off without a hitch Wednesday, administrators said.
The first day was delayed because there still was no electricity at Derby High School. The high school remains closed.
At Bradley School, Principal Christine DiGrazia marked her first opening day. She started as Bradley principal in December and missed last year’s first day of school and all that it entails.

Derby's All-Class Reunion is Saturday

DERBY - The 12th Annual Derby High School All-Class Reunion will be held Saturday with a suggested time of 7 p.m.
The time is suggested because organizers hope classmates will meet earlier to have dinner downtown.
Once again last year’s venues are on board for classes from the 70s' decade and earlier to meet at the Derby Elks Lodge, 203-735-1142, and the 80s’ decade and later to meet at Archie Moore’s, 203-732-3255.
Both venues are on Elizabeth Street. There are no cover charges.
Menus and entertainment vary; this year the Elks will have karaoke featuring MegaWatt entertainment.

Showers, food, water available to help Valley residents weather storm's aftermath

SHELTON - City residents who still don’t have power should be prepared to be without power for the next two to five days, city officials said Wednesday.
As of Wednesday afternoon, 7,794 Shelton customers, or 45 percent, were still without power, according to United Illuminating.

Nearly all Seymour residents have power back

SEYMOUR — More than 90 percent of Seymour residents had their power restored as of late Wednesday afternoon, with officials from Connecticut Light & Power lauding town crews for making their job easier in the wake of Hurricane Irene.
“CL&P reported that one of the reasons the work was done as quickly as it was, is that the Seymour Public Works crew had cleared the roads for the CL&P crews,” said First Selectman Paul Roy.

Derby Public Works employees suspended for doing work at city cop's gas station

DERBY — Two Department of Public Works employees recently were suspended for painting parking space stripes, while working for the city, at the lot of a business owned by a police officer who is chairman of the Derby Parking Authority, according to city officials.
The employees, Kelly Dunne and Shaun Wheeler, each received one-day unpaid suspensions, officials said.
The Board of Aldermen was told of the situation at its Aug. 25 meeting during executive session, though it didn’t take any action.

DUI checks in Seymour slated during holiday weekend

SEYMOUR — Police will be checking for impaired drivers this weekend along the Route 67 corridor.
According to Sgt. Steve Prajer, several officers will be out from 7 p.m. Friday through 3 a.m. Saturday, primarily checking for motor vehicle drivers who may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Juried art show in Valley to benefit Boys and Girls Club arts programs

ANSONIA — A taste of what local artists create will be on display at “An Artful Affair,” a fundraiser at Spector Furniture and Home Decor.
The Valley Arts Council is coordinating a juried show set for 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 14 in the store, 385 Main St.
The event will benefit arts programs at the Boys and Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley and the Valley Arts Council, said Steve DiRienzo of Derby, council vice president.
