Boy Scout Troop 3 slates Old Timer's Night in Derby

DERBY – Boy Scout Troop 3 will hold its annual Old Timer’s Night at 7 p.m. Dec. 27 at Second Congregational Church, 136 Elizabeth St. 

All current members, family, friend and alumni of Cub Pack 3, Boy Scout Troop 3 and Venture Crew/Explorer Post 33 are invited to attend. 

The annual  Old Timer's Nights began immediately after World War II ended to give the more than 100 Troop 3 alumni who served in the military a chance to reconnect.

Old Troop movies will be shown and a discussion of the upcoming events celebrating Troop 3’s 100^th anniversary in 2014 will be discussed. 

Admission is free; light refreshments will be served.

Story times slated at Derby Public Library

  DERBY - Registration is under way for the winter session of story times at Derby Public Library.

  This story time session will run from Jan. 15 to March 14. 

  The Library offers age-appropriate programs for children from birth to age 5.

    Beginning Jan. 15 at 10 a.m. infants age birth to 12 months along with a caregiver are invited to attend Baby and Me.

    

   The session introduces the youngest patrons to the library and books through simple songs and rhymes, movement, board books, and interaction with their caregivers.

   The class will run for about 20 minutes. 

   Participants are welcome to stay and play for some social time immediately following the program.

     Nursery Rhyme Time for toddlers 12 to 24 months old along with a caregiver will take place at 10 a.m. Thursdays.

     Finger plays, songs, movement, stories and rhymes will be included in this half-hour program.  The first class will be held Jan. 16.

     Time for Twos also begins on Jan. 16 at 11 a.m. with stories, songs, finger plays, and a simple craft for children who are between 25 and 35 months old along with their caregiver. 

    Terrific Threes is a story time geared for three-year olds, which is often that in-between stage of child development where they are not quite ready for an independent preschool library program.   

   Three-year olds will meet at 10 a.m. Fridays starting Jan. 17.

   Children 4-6 years old are welcome to join in for stories, songs, instruments, literacy games, and a craft at 11 a.m. Fridays beginning Jan. 17.   

    Preschool Story Time is designed to be an early school-readiness experience, an introduction to peer interaction and improved listening skills.  

   Children will attend this story time on their own while a caregiver remains in the Children’s Room area.

Intro to Reiki planned at Derby library

DERBY -  The Derby Public Library has scheduled a two-session Introduction to Reiki program at 6 p.m. on Mondays, Jan. 13 and 27.

Cheryl Giampapa, Reiki Master and Instructor, B.S. Social Work, will be the presenter.

On Jan. 13, Giampapa will give an overview of energy healing as a holistic approach to well being and a brief history of Reiki, along with its uses.

On Jan. 27, a typical Reiki session will be described and  demonstrated.

Individual mini sessions will be available to those who want to try it.

Derby Public Library to host baseball chat

DERBY -  The Derby Public Library has scheduled a Hot Stove Roundup session of its

popular Sports Talk series at 9 a.m. Jan. 9.

Rich Marazzi, radio sports talk host, author, and Major League Baseball rules consultant and his Silver Sluggers will discuss the trades, signings, and rumors of Major League Baseball’s off season.

As always, new members of all ages are welcome.

The ninth season of the weekly Sports Talk sessions will begin in April.

Take a hike at Ansonia Nature Center to start new year

ANSONIA - Why not usher in 2014 getting some exercise and fresh air at the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center?

At 10 a.m. on New Year's Day Ranger Marty Wigglesworth will lead a brisk walk through the park's frosty landscape.

Start your new year off right by resolving to spend more time outdoors, even in winter.
Dangerous walking conditions will cancel the hike, but in the event of deep snow the center has snowshoes available.

Nature's Child: Snow

At 10:30 a.m. Jan. 3 bring your preschooler to Nature's Child, a monthly program for ages 3 to 5 accompanied by an adult.

This month the theme will be snow. Join naturalist Wendy Sabol to learn about and play with snow.
Take a brisk walk to catch snowflakes on your tongue and learn how each snowflake is unique.

After the walk return to the nature center where a winter craft is planned, and warm up with hot cocoa.
Tuition is $6 per family; $4 for Ansonia residents and family-level member of Friends of the Ansonia Nature Center, Inc.

Bob and his wife, Cathy, have two young boys, ages 8 and 10. Bob is battling a rare form of cancer called Synovial Sarcoma. Synovial Sarcoma is a rare and aggressive soft tissue sarcoma.
