ANSONIA - A program on the sun and sunspots and how they can be viewed safely will be held at 2 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center, 10 Deerfield Road.
Bob Carruthers, Andy Poniros, and other members of the New Haven Astronomical Society will present the free program.
The session will begin inside with an illustrated lecture on the sun and sunspots.
The sun is a star that shines with energy deep inside it.
Looking at the sun requires specially equipped telescopes. Without this protection, viewing the sun can cause instant permanent blindness.
Using proper precautions, one can see dark sunspots on the sun's surface.
Find out what scientists have learned about these sunspots, discovered by Galileo in 1610.
Weather permitting, participants will go outside to view the sun with telescopes equipped with special filters.
Call 203-736-1053 to register.
