A Derby man has been indicted on a charge of being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
A federal grand jury in Hartford returned the indictment Wednesday against Albert Lopez, 41, of Derby Avenue.
The indictment alleges that on April 2, 2011, Lopez possessed a 9mm pistol, despite past convictions for second-degree assault with a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit, conspiracy to distribute cocaine, possession of contraband by an inmate, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.
It is a violation of federal law for a person previously convicted of a felony offense to possess a firearm or ammunition that has moved in interstate or foreign commerce. If convicted, Lopez could face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
